Except, from what I remember reading, the cross–or some sign in the sky–is a signal to duck and cover!

I’ve read that, too. But the vast majority would do what I suggested, which is why I think that most of this (not the Cross–that seems plausible to me) is hooey.

Maybe faith in God is comforting, but the sudden proof of God apparently can be quite terrifying, as different Biblical encounters prove.

A lot of approved Saints and Mystics have foretold the Three Days of Darkness, such as Padre Pio, Bl. Anna-Maria Taigi, Elizabeth Canori-Mora, Rosa-Colomba Asdente, Palma d’Oria, in Italy; Father Nectou, in Belgium; St. Hildegard, in Germany; Pere Lamy, Marie Baourdi, Marie Martel, Marie-Julie Jahenny, in France etc etc!

It also has biblical sources; Jesus Himself describes similar conditions which will happen just after the Great Tribulation and before the Second Coming of Christ:

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Mat.24:29-31).

No-one knows when, but Padre Pio has given a list of the signs that will herald this event.
I think that is why it is being talked about so much now, because the signs are all being fulfilled in our times.

I must be missing the part where it talks about 51% beeswax candles and where people that walk outside will drop dead.

If this is a matter of Catholic faith, how come it is never talked about? Does anyone have any links to Vatican sources about needing blessed beeswax candles?

Excellent point. If this was a matter of Catholic faith, isn’t it reasonable to assume that some/most parishes would be educating their members about it? Or do they want people to drop dead (right next to Fido, who will be perfectly fine)?

Jesus didn’t say anything about three days of darkness. The Bible doesn’t say anything like this. When Christ returns, it will be unexpected, and He will return just as He left–that is what the Scriptures say. There are proper and scholarly ways to study the end times from a Biblical perspective, esp. the Book of Revelation, that aren’t sensationalized and are the product of serious Biblical scholars that know the historical data and original languages, and the commentaries can be found in any respectable Catholic Study Bible. We know the Church will face persecution, but we do not know exactly what that entails.

The person my be Blessed, that does not have anything to do with her private revelation. The Church determines that on the holiness of her life, not visions, prophecies, etc. There is no Church approval for private revelation, not a hint of it.

But if one wants to make themselves nervous and fearful about the future, have at it, though I fail to see of what spiritual benefit this could possibly be. It is better to meditate on the actual Word of God and be ready for one’s own end, which is more likely to occur sooner than the actual Second Coming.

Furthermore, Jesus explicitly warned against believing rumors about His Second Coming and people making claims about it. Who do you want to believe?

So in my household we have our blessed candles (I bought them from a small organic farm who make them from their own beeswax and had them blessed) but the significant point is that we must be living in a state of grace, receiving the Sacraments and living a life that strives to follow God’s will in all things. All the blessed candles in the world won’t do you any good otherwise! And you could drop dead tomorrow, so shouldn’t you always be ready?

It is not a matter of faith, in that we do not have to believe in private revelations as we do in the dogmas of the church. however, Pope John Paul II canonized in Padre Pio as a Saint on 16/6/2002. I see no reason why such a holy man and a stigmatist would wish to mislead us; quite the contrary. Let me clarify by saying that this is private revelation that nobody is bound to believe. Your not a “bad Catholic” for not believing.
On the flip side of that, many mystics, Canonized Saints and Popes have spoken about a “chastisement period” and the three days of darkness. Most noteably St. Faustina who’s apparition is approved and she is a Saint.

As I wrote above, I did research it for myself. Pio was a modern saint and he was well documented. Nowhere else except the letter you cite is it ever mentioned and that seems to be related to a Bayside site according to this: catholicforum.fisheaters.com/index.php?topic=3427880.55;wap2
