Update Nov. 1: The Associated Press quoted Chiyome Fukino as saying that both she and the registrar of vital statistics, Alvin Onaka, have personally verified that the health department holds Obama’s original birth certificate.
Fukino also was quoted by several other news organizations. The Honolulu Advertiser quoted Fukino as saying the agency had been bombarded by requests, and that the registrar of statistics had even been called in at home in the middle of the night.
Honolulu Advertiser, Nov. 1 2008: “This has gotten ridiculous,” state health director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said yesterday. “There are plenty of other, important things to focus on, like the economy, taxes, energy.” . . . Will this be enough to quiet the doubters? “I hope so,” Fukino said. “We need to get some work done.”
Fukino said she has “personally seen and verified that the Hawaii State Department of Health has Sen. Obama’s original birth certificate on record in accordance with state policies and procedures."

I understand that long-standing interpretation of the constitutional requirement of being a natural-born citizen holds that, in addition to being born on US soil, the parents must be US citizens at the time of the child’s birth. There is no question that Obama’s father was not a US citizen at any time which would seem to disqualify him outright, regardless of where he was born. As it is, we have as president a person who seems unrooted in the traditional American experience, having been raised as a “Jakarta street kid” and who knows what else? (all records are sealed). Ignoring the Constitution has far-reaching effects.

If all or any of the above is true, then there really is no reason NOT to provide the birth certificate.

It may make for a great work of fiction or mystery, but why do we need a “man of mystery” as President.

Not a birth certificate, a certificate of live birth which anybody can walk in to a hospital and get. That is not evidence of Obama being born in America. And it has nothing to do with the fact that Obama is Black. George Bush was asked to show his birth certificate.

Good point! In addition, Barack Obama held double citizenship during his life, regardless of whether he was born in Hawaii or Kenya.
He was a double citizen of the USA and Kenya until his Kenyan citizenship automatically expired, when he turned 21 years old and did nothing to re-instate that citizenship within 2 years of his 21st birthday. In addition, he may have held Indonesian citizenship as well.
So, we are also talking about setting a precedent here, former double and possibly triple citizens becoming presidents of the USA.

In addition, since he never showed his passports and other documents, we can’t be sure whether he truly lost his Kenyan citizenship, and maybe he still continues to be a citizen of Indonesia, as well. We don’t know, because Congress did not investigate his status.
If it turns out, a few years from now, that Barack Obama not only held double or triple citizenship as a child, but he still was double or triple citizen when assuming the office of President of the USA, that will also set a precedent.

You are misinformed. Chester Arthur’ eligibility was challenged, and courts ruled that he was eligible; his Irish father was not naturalized until he was 14.
He does not in any way appear to have grown up as a “street kid;” this is really too much of an exaggeration, a slander against the nation and against his mother.
