Yes! Finally someone mentioned Tennessee Ernie Ford as one of their favorites! I’m not just referring to this thread; over the years I’ve mentioned him and it seems like nobody remembers him. His hymns and Christmas carols are a treasured part of my collection!

I not only remember Tennessee Ernie Ford but I remember his television show. Apart from his major hit, Sixteen Tons, he had a beautiful baritone voice.

Paul Anka wrote (and sang) My Way, and he is another singer who should not be forgotten. Of course Sinatra made the song famous. Another important male singer was Sammy Davis Jr.

In the case of Sinatra, there are always another ten songs one could add. And he also recorded several songs more than once. I personally prefer the ballads such as “It was a very good year,” “One for my baby,” and “In the wee hours of the morning.”

I hate when someone takes “My Way” as a rejection of God. Our pastor used that in a homily & I told him I didn’t think that’s what Paul Anka or Sinatra meant.Father Mitch once said that “My Way” is what everyone will be singing in Hell.
In the music business, or any business for that matter, there are people always telling you, “don’t sing that song or don’t play in that club” …well the song is stating, that a man must believe in what he thinks is the best for himself. The song says “regrets, I’ve had a few, but too few to mention.”
I was playing at a parish function and another priest asked me to play “My Way” because it was his favorite song!
I saw Frank Sinatra at Carnegie Hall…people were bringing him flowers & things after the performance, but one lady gave him a large crucifix.
He held it out & said, "I’ve been talking to Him, a lot lately!

Thank you! I agree. I don’t see it as a rejection of God either. He used his God given talents to make a life with God’s help and his music definitely influenced several generations and he wasn’t that bad of an actor either. I think he gave his all.

In the liner notes of one of his CDs, there’s a story about how the TV executives wanted him to stop closing his show with a hymn. A lot of people wrote letters telling him they liked the hymn, so he continued doing it.
