Which denominations are most hostile to Catholicism?

Explain Southern Baptists. When I was a Baptist, that lived in the South, I heard nothing of the hate for Catholics. Explain PLEASE
 
A little off topic here, but a one post reply is all I’m looking for. I thought “Southern Baptist” meant Baptists from the South. Are there churches outside the South that describe themselves this way? And are they there in numbers? Did we export them??😉
 
well, in my personal experience as someone who’s entire family is church of Christ, when I converted to Catholicism I thought I was going to get kicked out! You may not hear it that often in the actual churches but the people themselves have a VERY negative view of Catholicism. The only thing they hate more than Catholics are Catholic priests, if I go to the seminary it just might kill my grandmother. (yes they are that close-minded)🤷

This a link to Southern Baptists. There are a separate domination stemming from the Baptists. Baptists and Southern Baptists are two totally different denominations. As far as I know most Baptists do not hate Catholics, Southern Baptist, I have seen on TV (evangelists) are terribly anti Catholic. This link should give you some insight on Southern Baptists

I am not knocking the south. I love living here but, there are many, many small, independant Bible churches throughout the area that seem to have a genuine hatred for the Catholic Church.

I lived in NJ my entire life, until 3 years ago and I never heard anything against Catholics until I moved to the South.
Also I love living here, but I still can’t understand why the hatred for anything Catholic.
The first question out of the mouths is “What church do you go to” and of course I answer them, then comes either the long stare as if I grew a third eye or worse, they have to say I should then come to their church and find the truth and be saved.

Where is your proof that SB are anti-catholic?
I do not need insight on the SBC, my church was a member of it.

Yes, there are congrgations beyond the traditional South that are part of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Baptists are deliniated–and I won’t try to explain all of the branches or what their differences are–as Southern, American, Conservative, etc. They prefer to cinsiderthemselves independent congregations, and part of a “convention” or conferenence, rather than us teh term denomination.
As for anti-Catholic, I found that a local ABC congregation was very anti-Catholic, in fact, anti-just-about-everyone-else. In a town where I once lived, the pastor of our parish, a longtime monsignor, and a local Southern Baptist minister were good friends, and when the latter died, the monsignor celebrated a Mass for him.
On the other hand, I am aware that attitude toward Catholics varies among the Southern Baptists, with some preaching against the Church, while members of Billy Graham’s organization have encouraged lapsed Catholics to return to the Church.

Eh, Yes and No. I was a member of the SBC, they are the Southern Baptist Convention. If your Southern and Baptist, then sure your Southern Baptist, but you might not be a member of the SBC.
 
All this talk about Baptists reminded me of my days in the Academy where I was in a class with an American Baptist, a Southern Baptist and a German Baptist, and boy did they not get along 😃

Never really got to the bottom of it, but when we did deadly encounters, none of them wanted to be partners… Oddly thought they had no problem being mine 🤷

The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod’s doctrinal statement on the Antichrist says that “all characteristics of the Antichrist are fulfilled in the papacy of the Roman Catholic Church”. (The Complete Guide to Christian Denominations, Rhodes, pg 236). I went to thier website, www.wels.net, and sure enough – it’s true!

As a rule, the less a denomination understands and has sacraments, the more likely they are to be anti-Catholic.

Here in Alabama, the small, evangelical Churches are bad. **Anything that is Church of God, Church of Christ, etc. The Baptist Church tend to have an anti-Catholic mentality **in some members, but it is not commonly seen in the pastors of the larger, more urban churches. A local preacher from a rural baptist church got on the sports show and called Catholics non-Christians and not a part of the Body of Christ at all. The rest of the show was people calling in and calling him an idiot, most of them non-Catholic.

Haven’t read all three pages of this thread yet, but had to comment on this one thus far. BAD?? Really?? Wow. I am Church of God and have been all my life and I have NEVER heard anything said against the Catholic church. I have also been in Church of God churches all over Alabama and have never heard anything. We actually have 3 Catholics in our church, my husband being one of them, and they are very much accepted and loved and never asked to “standup” for or even asked questions about their faith and beliefs. So, I think you stand corrected on that. I also have friends and family in the baptist community. Again, never heard anything said about Catholics. Now, I am not saying all churches don’t say anything about Catholics, but I have NEVER in all my years of being in church and I am 35 have never heard anything said about Catholics. I think some probably do, but that swings both ways. I guarantee you that some of the Catholic churches have said things about protestant churches. In fact, I know they do, I was sitting in one of the masses in 2008 with my husband and the priest felt the need to say something about the Anglican church. So, the doors swings both directions. Anyway, just wanted to clarify that and really unless you have actually sit in one of these churches and actually heard for yourself that fact, I don’t think I would be calling any church BAD. Just my 2 cents!

I was offering what I have experienced. Do you know how many former Catholics who have become members of these groups have told me that they were NOT CHRISTIAN before they covnerted? Or that Catholics are damned? OR totally misrepresent what the Church teaches? Being from Alabama, you know good and well that they did not learn the bad information from school. Nor could the majority of them have learned it from Catholics. If you are in an area that gets the Finebaum Show, listen for Dawson to call. Every now and then, he will talk about how Catholics are not and never were Christian. He is a baptist preacher.

Further I did not even say that they WERE anti-Catholic. I said that they tend to have an anti-Catholic mentality. There is a difference.

I have had friends that were members of these denominations. Most of them were kind and polite to me. The vast majority never said a word to me about anything. However, more than once, people that they went to church with did. I can hold my own, but it does not change the fact that anyone who says that Catholicism is not a Christian faith is incorrect and that is an anti-Catholic mentallity. I have also known of several of them who were in the KKK…and I think that we are still number three on their most hated list
 
the sda. many years ago they wanted to put a whole page ad in a fresno, ca newspaper explaining how the pope is the anti-christ, and catholicism the whore of babylon. only after catholics’ loud outcry did the paper junk the ad. my sister’s in-laws are sda and they were vocal about the same bashing against catholics. only after they knew we are serious catholics did they refrain from their hostility. even the book authored by ellen white, the great controversy, contained anti-Christ accusations against the pope and labeling the faith as the whore of babylon. they succeeded though to convert my sister after she has been married 25 years to her husband. 😦

I have encountered the same things from a few Baptists that I have known, and I had to set the record straight for them. It’s sad that an uneducated few (both Protestants and Catholics) mislead so many of their fellow believers with false statements. We can only pray it ends, but as long as people are people I’m afraid we’re stuck.

True.

A couple of years ago, I saw a book in Wal-Mart about world religions. It was written by a man who supposedly held a phd in Theology. Anyway, Catholicism was separate from “Christianity” and the information in it was ridiculously wrong. It was not as bad as a Jack Chick comic, but it was still wrong. There is no excuse in the information age when you can get a CCC at a bookstore and check the internet. Anyway, this book had a big section on Islam, and this was right after 9/11 (I guess it was longer ago than I thought). I am sure that they sold a fw copies of it. How many people got information about the Catholic faith from this goof-ball?

Unfortunately, TOO MANY! In a Lifeway store (run by the SBC) I saw a book “How to Witness to Catholics”. I was infuriated. My wife begged me not to show my butt by going off on the managers. I guess for some people the old saying “you can’t cure stupid” is very true.

Noted Catholic-hostiles Billy Graham and Charles Colson are Southern Baptist I believe.

And Catholic hostile “With Questions” has been in several Pentecostal/Charismatic churches.

Consider if a person goes as far as to formally convert he may have come to the belief that he really didn’t believe in God when Baptised and Confirmed as a Catholic. By Evangelical definition if you don’t really believe in your heart then you are not a Christian. In effect some or most Catholics are Christian but the convert was faking as A Catholic and made false confessions before his born again experience.

As a baby Christian I asked one of my teachers “are Catholics Christian?” and the awnser in effect was yes but they don’t experience the fullness of faith, to steal your terminology, as the individual defers to the Priesthood and stands in the way of the individuals Christian walk.

The only “anti-Catholic” anything I have heard were from ex-Catholic converts describing why our church was much better for them. And from Nigerians and Filipinos who had actually been in low level conflict/discrimination from both sides, with Catholics when not in actual combat with Muslims.
