^ take note that for me, Mormonism & Catholism pretty much has the same levels of practical ills & benefits.

I think both Mormons and Muslims have a long way to go toward tolerance of other people. I like Muslims who have immigrated to the west, for probably the same reasons I like Mormons who have left Utah (as I have). They tend to see their fellow men and women as individuals, rather than outsiders to be converted, or bothered when they will not convert.

That’s just my take on it all.
I agree with you on this. I would like to add, however, that those who move outside of their sphere of influence but end up congregating in larger communities usually do not gain that tolerance. There are LDS communities outside of Utah that are just as closed-minded and intolerant as the heart of rural Utah. And the same with Muslim communities in the US.

Those who move to a place where they experience more cultural isolation either adapt or return with more prejudices.

And, taking you as an example, aren’t the more liberal of each religion more likely to see a need to “escape” from such communities? So which comes first, the chicken or the egg?

For me a religion is just as good as the kind of communities it produce. And obviously mormon communities are way better than muslim communities. Mormon communities are far more tolerant and progressive than muslim ones. I vote for the LDS.

On the negative sides I’d prefer polygamist camps over jihadist camps any day.
I agree. The Morman people I know are peaceful, hard-working, well mannered citizens who don’t make any special demands of society, pay their own way, are respectful of others, the list goes on and on. In fact, I think we Catholics could learn a thing or two from Mormans!

They are a cohesive community that even has its own welfare system. They are fully engaged in the larger society, even while maintaining their own value system, which is strict and self-dicsiplined! The only thing I find lacking in them is their doctrines.

Actually, both are non-Christian faiths started by self-proclaimed prophets and I wouldn’t consider one to be better than the other. If you think Mormonism is Christian, you seriously need to learn some basics of the cosmology. In a broad sense, Islam could actually be seen as closer. By the way, that’s not a criticism of either faith or their followers. I have not known near as many Moslems as I have Mormons, but those that I have known (and do know) are nowhere near as arrogant and standoffish as the Mormons. Of course I know Mormons who are totally cool, accepting, and regular people, but that has been the exception. On the other hand, ALL of the Moslems I have known fall into that category and their overall deportment leaves me with a MUCH better impression. On a personal level, I have never had a negative experience with a Moslem; here or even when traveling in Moslem countries. I think they all get a bad rep based the activities of a small, albeit very visible, minority of (largely) politically motivated nut-jobs. Based on my personal experience, I’d much rather have a Muslim neighbor than a Mormon neighbor.
Well Jesus did say Love thy neighbor as yourself. I guess He meant to say unless thy neighbor is a Mormon.

? Montana? He was writing from the context of his own experience. If you have not experienced LDS people who hate their non-LDS neighbors, then please refrain from judging.

Unless you are one of those LDS people who believe that LDS people do no wrong. In which case, please open your eyes, ears, soul, and mind.

"“of course I know Mormons who are totally cool , acepting and regular people” So are you saying that Most Mormons are not acepting or are you saying they are not people ? How judgemental .Is that what we as Christians are called to do is judge others. I know little of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints. (LDS) I can however tell you that from my limited experince they are far less judgemental of other Christians We mock what we do not understand. I do not support The LDS religion I do however accept them not only as Fellow christians but also as human beings 🤷 Thank you and Good Bye

I’d say the two religions have a common goal…to discredit Christianity.

As a former Mormon who went atheist for a long time and then decided to check out religions, as a sort of self-experiment…it was a conscious choice for me, to learn what Christianity is.

But, it is for this reason that I have chosen neither Islam or LDS, neither are Christian. And, secondary to that, both are made up by humans. Which is how it is that I chose Catholicism. Making the decision to look at, and understand Christianity, while still in that experimental phase (ie, no faith whatsoever)…I chose the oldest with roots in Christ and Christian Tradition.

Its interesting you would say that.

We have a Mormon friend that says the moral values of today’s Mormons and Catholics are pretty similar.

From the little I know about Mormons, this seems pretty true.

Yes, you are correct, Jesus taught that one should love his neighbor as himself; in fact that is essentially the core of his teachings. That’s the only point in your comment that makes any sense.

I’m sorry that your limited experience with Mormons doesn’t correlate well with my substantial and life-long experience with followers of that particular faith, but I guess that’s just the way it is. The OP asked a question, to which I responded from my personal experience; perhaps you should learn some manners and realize that there are people in this world who have had experiences that differ from yours and may therefore have some differing opinions. If you insist that you know everything, you will never be able to learn anything.

I am sorry if you have taken my remarks wrong I may have taken others wrong as well and I am sorry. I never have claimed to know it all.

I am not LDS However I do have LDS neighbors that are very kind people. I apologist for any miss understanding.
Thank You and goodbye.

What makes Muslims so scary?

I hung out with them yesterday. They were nice people. A great many of the ones I saw were born here…regular English speaking White people. Nobody was talking about radical politics or committing crimes. Everyone was just enjoying themselves.

Islam is just another constitutionally protected religious movement.

At first I thought you were my Catholic neighbor, but then I noticed you lived in Montana. 😃

I live in a heavily Catholic area. My kids play with Catholic kids. I’ve had Catholic kids tear my house up in sleepovers and birthday parties. My kids will probably go to a jesuit prep school in a few years. I’m a Mormon who thinks Catholics are cool.

One thing I like about Catholics is the fact that they don’t preach themselves into my face, like many fundamentalist protestants do. I have known Catholics for years, and never once has any of them been judgmental or pushy. In fact, it has been very rare that the topic of religion has come up at all. They seem to enjoy life more than the other Christians.

Of course that’s just anecdotal, but I’ve lived in a town that’s 70% Catholic for the last 10 years and it has been my experience.

That is because Catholics are content in what they believe. they don’t have to be in your face.

Islam, unfortunately, is steeped in anti-Western, anti-Jewish, anti-Christian thought, and has been since it’s invention. It was founded by a violent warlord who conquored by the sword. Islamic influx into Western lands has always been, and continues to be a threat to our way of life.

Mormonism, although it is a totally quirky sect loosely originating out of the American Protestant explosion of denominations in the 1800s, is founded by peaceful refugees who settled in Utah, and by hard work and family values, prospered and grew. They have never been a violent group, and they had the good sense to abandon the questionable practise of polygamy. You don’t hear Mormans demanding that society adopt their religious practises,
Their evangelical efforts are peaceful, and they don’t threaten the lives of people who decide to leave their sect.

No, they were not peaceful. See Mountain Meadows Massacre, the Danites and the Mormon Militia.

Also, you don’t live in Utah. I do, and they do demand that Utah, as a state, keep to their religious practices.

And yes, the lives of people who left their cult were threatened. Today, lives are not threatened, but family coherence and livelihoods are.
