Which of popular Christian musicians are Catholic?

While Twila Paris songs may be found in Catholic Hymnals, she’s not Catholic. Her father is chancellor of a non-denominational Christian college.
 
Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries is definitely Catholic.
 
I know this is an old thread, and someone may have mentioned this, but the song on transubstantiation is so great–it’s actually by Matt Maher and is called The End and the Beginning….
 
As I’m currently reading the late Johnny Ramone’s autobiography, written just before his death, I can tell you that we can add one of the founders of The Ramones and one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time to this list as a lifelong Catholic…

Raised Catholic, but today identifies as simply Christian.

But, she’s pro-life: “I am in no position to judge other women, you know. But I mean, why did she get pregnant? It’s not good for women to go through the procedure [abortion] and have something living sucked out of their bodies. It belittles women. Even though some women say, ‘Oh, I don’t mind to have one,’ every time a woman has an abortion, it just crushes her self-esteem smaller and smaller and smaller.”

Matt Maher and Audrey Assad are definitely Catholic. I hear rumors of Chris Tomlin and David Crowder are converting to Catholicism but I haven’t heard any verification on that. I know there are many local catholic musicians ( like Adam Bitter in the midwestern states) but some don’t go pro for different reasons.
 
Do y’all know Sufjan Stevens? Their songs move my heart on that very prayerful yet ubber hip kind of level… “sister” “the way that he sings” “transfiguration” You wont likely hear them on a Christian station as their sound is more indie. I really like them.

Other good catholic musicians are the fun cajun band from New Orleans “Les Angelus”, (picture the von trap family goes deep south, singing ballad of st cecilia, and Saint Marys blues of the sorrowful mother)… definitely check out Danielle Rose (especially dig her “pursue me” album) … and I really like Aaron Shust, but am not sure if he’s Catholic or Protestant. His songs seem to have some Catholic sensibility, like beloved Matt Maher.

Also, does anyone know about Phil collins? Early Genesis had some songs that left me wondering about his faith orientations…

And alto he’s definately not Catholic, some of Al Greens music about God is really awesome if you want a little something different.

and oh! what about Elvis’s recording of the “miracle of the rosary” !!! you can you tube it probably…

Great thread. Music is such a key way I encounter Jesus and dwell with the trinity in delight and gratitude for my life and the gifts of this world, despite all the murk and mire…Thanks for all your responses.
 
oh oh oh, i almost forgot, “the innocence mission.” definitely catholic and a little more like indie starbucks kind of sound. refreshing and sweet harmonies…
 
Matt Maher is Catholic, which is pretty obvious to most people, but he is definitely very popular in Christian Music. I went to Mass at the Life Is Good Rally for the March For Life and he sang at the Mass. He is incredible!

I never listen to Christian music. As in, up until a couple weeks ago, in the last two years I’ve probably listened to the local Christian music station a grand total of an hour, maybe 90 minutes (I bought Colin Raye’s album a couple weeks ago, so I’ve been listening to that). After seeing your post a couple nights ago I decided to check out Matt Maher. To back up what you said about how popular he is, despite the miniscule amount of time I’ve listened to the local Christian station, I recognized at least 3-4 of his songs. One of the songs (Christ is Risen) I specifically recognized from how often I’ve heard it playing at the local, fairly openly anti-Catholic Christian bookstore. I may go ahead and buy one of his albums after listening to it on Spotify.
 
One of the best Catholic Musician and writter of great Catholic Music is David Haas. He has numerous songs on YouTube and his music is played at Mass and at Life-Teen Masses…You will be pleasantly surprised at all of his music…Enjoy him!🙂
 
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but a majority of the members of the metal band Demon Hunter are Catholic 🙂

This band has been popular among me and all of my friends of other Christian denominations, and I recently found this out and found it to be really cool! 😃
 
I’ve been buying a bit more Christian music with an eye toward Catholic artists. I have all Matt Maher’s albums now and over the last week or two have picked up Audrey Assad’s albums and Where I Find You by Kari Jobe (I know she’s not Catholic, but it’s a great album). This morning I got Culture of Life by Danielle Rose. Some of the songs aren’t my cup of tea, but overall it’s a really good album. I may get her Mysteries next. I also listened to some clips by Chris Bray, who’s another Catholic artist out of Canada. I might get something by him down the road.
