Sloth is an area I try to be aware of…like now for instance…I should be working and not on-line (:o).

I was going to say pride, but my DH said for me it’s really wrath because I have “a strong sense of justice.” I don’t fly into rages, I don’t have a temper, but I seeth in anger alot, and comfort myself with the image of the hated person or people in Hell. Usually it’s one particular person, someone who was very emotionally abusive to me 4 years ago, resulting in PTSD to this day. He got away with it - he is now very sucessful in life - and I have a very difficult time coping with this fact.

I chose pride particularly when it slides into making judgements about other people.
Hmmm, that’s interesting. I chose anger because I can be very impatient or intolerant. Does this begin with pride and manifest
itself in anger? I’d like to not be so annoyed when people seem
incapable of making a simple decision. I was at the butcher’s
counter the other day and a woman literally spent five minutes
making up her mind on ONE piece of fish. I really got annoyed.
This happens to me a lot and I’d like to fight the tendency.

What to do in such situations?

Pride. It leads to everything else. Anger? Mine’s usually self-righteous anger (i.e. pride). Lust? I’ll dwell on stuff too long because I have this idea that I’m secure enough in my morality (i.e. pride). I’d continue, but you see where I’m going.

I hear you, brother. :o

Maybe you could do something like say a prayer everytime someone makes you wait.

What I try to do on the judgements thing (note the TRY) is when I catch myself doing it I think of all the possible good reasons for that action and say to myself ‘what makes you think you know’.

Ok… 26 votes for it but only one person posted anything about lust? C’mon: LUST! Every blessed day is nothing less than a cry for help in this regard. I can not imagine how we can begin to fight the kind of constant bombardment of our sensuality that goes on today. It is absolutely everywhere one turns and then they have the gaul to ask about the breakdown of the family unit!

That the clergy take a vow of celibacy is nothing short of astounding and inspirational to me.

Good suggestions, thank you!

I totally agree with the latter comment. OTOH are you a male? Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think women are so consumed with
lust as are men. Maybe we aren’t as ‘visual’ as men and thus the racy magazine covers and TV shows don’t have the same impact. When I see overly sexualized material on TV I find it more repelling than stimulating. I am amazed at what is on TV these days and not in a good way!! I’ve been married to the same guy since 1979 and just don’t have any interest in other men.

Boy can I relate to that. I think if only I could overcome pride?
But pride goeth before my fall!

I would have to say anger. I’m working on it though. It comes so easy to me because that is how my parents dealt with things. I have kids now and I have to set an example.

I think that depends entirely on the woman. All joking aside, it’s a huge issue for me, and I am grateful for sloth and for living in a relatively closed community where it simply wouldn’t be possible to sneak around on my husband (whom I love dearly).

The relative lack of lust responses may be due to the fact that many of the posters here are kind of o-l-d.

There we go… you had to know the italicized sin would be the most popular (i.e. hardest temptation to resist)

Great poll. For me, most recently, it’s been pride (1) , sloth (2) and envy (3).

By the way, what does gossip fall under? I used to be the world’s worst gossip, but i’m working hard on it.

Since my faith grown, I’m also guilty of being too judgmental of others.

Thanks for helping me look at myself.

Blessings,
Shannin

I’m old and lust tops the list. Most of the posts were from women. I agree with a previous poster that this is more of (although certainly not exclusively) a male problem.

In fact I find it disproportionate with the other 6 sins listed. I also agree with yet another poster that we are constantly put to the test in this regard. When (if) I get to Heaven my first question will be “why were we put the test this way”? My next statement will be, “thank you for releasing me from this”.

To the women who do not suffer greatly from this temptation, it is a blessing, enjoy it.

I did not have to think about this one at all.
I am quite civilized, but you would never know…
Inside… I could be …feeling just the :banghead: opposite.
But these sins are not isolated.
I see anger’s roots in pride.
If I loose my patience with a fool, it is more than just anger.
It is also pride.
I totally agree with you. Pride is what I voted for. Whenever I find I’m angry about something it’s usally because my pride is taking offense.

Hi Shannin,
Been there done that…and slip every so often… but keep picking myself up…repent and continue to ask for mercy and forgiveness and the grace to overcome… God Bless, Annunciata:)

Only one? Gee that’s hard. I would have to say pride followed by anger (with the one leading to the other). But I also have a lot of trouble with sloth and lust.

In the following order… (Thank God for confession 👍 )
  1. Anger :banghead:
  2. Envy :nope:
  3. Pride :yup:
  4. Covetousness :hmmm:
  5. Lust
  6. Sloth
  7. Gluttony
