I also voted for pride. But now that I’ve read the responses, I see that sloth is also a problem for me.Thank you for the insight.

Peace,
Linda

Count me in for Lust. Although, pride and anger also have a hand in it. Good news is that I know I am normal with such desires built in me. Bad news is when I give in to this lust and do something inappropriate.

Lust is the easiest of these to see. It’s not hard to figure out when this one’s around. What I don’t want to see is when God shows me the problems I’ve had with the others.

I would have to go into the lust category. I remember as a very small (4-5) boy seeing a playboy calendar in a friends garage and it set my little heart aflutter :o . My father (God Rest his soul) encouraged it by teaching me young about what women look good and which don’t. I could judge a great pair of  …eyes, a mile away by the time I was 10. That was also the same time Mom’s boss molested me, I guess it left some scars. By the time I was 21 I had been incredibly sexually active. My mother was unsure how to deal with all these girls calling and my dating and my dad was living vicariously through me. I suppose I wanted his approval. Then I married and I was terrified that I would cheat. TERRIFIED because of all the women I’d slept with I feared I couldn’t be happy with one. But I prayed for years :gopray: at Mass that St. Joseph would be my guide and never allow me to be tempted. I have been married now over 17 FAITHFUL years and am just as in-love with (and desire) my lovely wife (thanks to the abundant Grace of God alone and not by my weak flesh). But about 5 years ago we returned from years of military travel and voila we discovered cable TV and the internet and “bob’s yer uncle” I have a whole new battle to fight and that temptation is much harder than any I have ever felt when meeting women. :banghead: There is just something about visual stimulation that has always hooked me. So now I fight that war, one day at a time through prayer and fasting and of course the rosary. Who can have those thoughts when thinking of Mary?
Does anyone else find the ease of porn on the internet or those soft core shows on Cinemax a temptation?:hmmm:

Original quote by Lisa N.:

I chose anger because I can be very impatient or intolerant.

I’d like to not be so annoyed when people seem
incapable of making a simple decision.
What to do in such situations?

I understand what you are saying as I have the same issues. What has helped me, MOST of the time, is I say to myself, “What has this got to do with eternity?” I also think the evil one has found my weak spot and is delighted with making me feel miserable.

Pride - I beleive the other 6 are rooted and spring forth from Pride.

I might have answered differently depending on the time that I happened upon this question (great question, by the way). At present I answered gluttony. Thankfully, though I am healthy due to mainly good practices, I have weaknessess in which I overindulge at times, which could be harmful to my health if carried on and some practices, namely imbibing, which is not in itself sinful, and to which I thankfully am not addicted, after just cause and trials to be so, at the not so old, yet not so tender age that I am in my late 30’s. Spiritually, and of highest concern to me is the attachment and that I knowingly tolerate and fight against justifying. Followed by the other six in the order of Pride (which really has its place in the rest), Anger, Sloth, Envy, Greed, and Lust (which would have been my #1 answer quite some time ago for quite some time).

Ok… 26 votes for it but only one person posted anything about lust? C’mon: LUST! Every blessed day is nothing less than a cry for help in this regard. I can not imagine how we can begin to fight the kind of constant bombardment of our sensuality that goes on today. It is absolutely everywhere one turns and then they have the gaul to ask about the breakdown of the family unit!

That the clergy take a vow of celibacy is nothing short of astounding and inspirational to me.
I agree with you. I said lust. I am a college student and I am constantly seeing girls dressed in skimpy clothing and hering the way many people talk. It makes it alot tougher.

Where did you get your name from? Is it from the song?

Exactly! St. Joseph remained chaste beside Mary, although she was a young lady all along. We can call upon him and keep Mary beside us as well to remain chaste.

Yes, especially after years of addiction. That’s why, not trusting my weak flesh, I dropped premium channels, blocked dubious ones and installed a browsing filter on the computer. Yes, it’s all there, but being blocked by the TV or by the computer filters gives me pause to contain concupiscence.

May Mary and Joseph help us.

I’d say lust at the top of the list, but not very far from the others. Particularly pride, which is actually the most powerful of them all and is behind each one of them.

Then again, lately I’ve been wondering if the devil hasn’t been whispering in my ears that I should only worry about lust while the others run unchecked. I struggle to avoid lustful temptations, yet let laziness, anger, avarice, etc run free…

May Jesus have mercy on me.

Sharon, thank you. This is an excellent suggestion. I do feel miserable when I’m angry and impatient. This should be a big help in understanding how to make these feelings evaporate

Dear WhiteDove

Thank you for this excellent examination of conscience, by the way your polls are always a raging success. Have you thought about a fund raiser night for your parish based on polls :rotfl: you’d raise a fortune!!! It’d be fun too and also examine faith…personally I think you’d be a raging success!!!

God Bless you WhiteDove and much love and peace to you

Teresa

Hey White Dove…
I like your polls ,too. Teresa9 has a neat idea what do you think?
Could be a good fundraiser…

👍

I took the poll on the seven deadly sins and this is why I think so few considered GREED.

GREED

An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth: “Many . . . attach to competition the stigma of selfish greed” (Henry Fawcett).

Greed is all right, by the way . . . I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself.Ivan F. Boesky

So This is why only a few considered greed, I do believe. And now you know why my pride is needing more restraint.

Having just broken my 5 month resolution never to look at the Politics forum, I have had occasion to discover anew my 2 most besetting sins.

Anger and Pride.
I’m not going to say what made me angry there because I don’t want to upset anyone here on this peaceful forum!

But I was also full of pride in stating my opinion dogmatically, and in judging certain others to be misinformed and stupid.

May God forgive me!! Hopefully the posters on THAT forum will too!
For my penance, I’m going to pray that civil war will not break out in the US after the elections. :bowdown2:

Hello Shoshana!! 👋 Hey, I meant to thank you very much for your support on THAT thread! Whew!! Once I got going there I couldn’t keep my mouth shut. I wasn’t ignored, exactly!
The Politics forum is a terrible place IMHO!!! I’m struck by the huge contrast elsewhere in the forums, like here. Thanks be to God for that!
I don’t want to spoil this thread by referring to anything specific. Let’s say there is a fair bit of uncharitable stuff going on in THAT forum - perfectly understandable I guess. I’m not used to politics stirring up such anger and white hot passion, because I come from a country where power and influence don’t come into the picture.
Please, please, please don’t anyone talk politics to me here, I beg you. I have resolved to say not another word. I regret upsetting people. I repent. The subject is closed, and I’m never going back there again.
If you want to PM me, Shoshanna, feel free!
By the way, I love your beautiful signature from St John of the Cross. Having spent some years as a Carmelite, I love that spirituality (OK, I haven’t exactly practised it just lately:o !)
God bless everyone on this very important day:blessyou:

Dear Theresa and Aimee,
Thanks for enjoying my polls. I love coming up with ideas. It’s just a fun creative outlet for me. I like thinking up an idea, then trying to come up with creative options that might be just what someone out there might be thinking.

As far as a fundraiser… To tell you the truth it’s better to stay out of the line of fire at my parish. I think I’ll try and continue to maintain a low profile and not get in anyone’s way or make them feel like they need to defend their turf by harming my reputation with viscious backstabbing. It’s kind of strange how folks sometimes act. 😦
