'White Europe': 60,000 nationalists march on Poland's independence day

Tens of thousands of nationalists have marched through Warsaw to mark Poland’s independence day, throwing red smoke bombs and carrying banners with such slogans as “white Europe of brotherly nations”.

The march organised by far-right groups was one of many events marking Poland’s rebirth as a nation in 1918, overshadowing official state observances and other patriotic events.

Police estimated 60,000 people took part. Many were young men, some with their faces covered or with beer bottles in hand, but families and older Poles also participated.

Those marching chanted “God, honour, country” and “Glory to our heroes”, while a few people also shouted xenophobic phrases like “pure Poland, white Poland” and “refugees get out”.

Some participants marched under the slogan “We Want God”, words from an old Polish religious song that the US president, Donald Trump, quoted during a visit to Warsaw earlier this year. Speakers spoke of standing against liberals and defending Christian values.

I think even that is an exaggeration, reminds me of how they singled out and exaggerated such racism during Trumps campaign to smear him. A faithful Catholic can’t be racist anyway, so it’s a contradiction given the rest.

Hello this is 2017, we should have learned from that…

Bias against skin color I agree, I’ll never understand that.

In regards to mass Islamic Immigration, it is very different, the only reason people call a resistance to that ‘prejudiced’ is because I believe they don’t know some of the very troubling teachings of Islam or they have an ulterior motive. On the micro scale it works, but on the macro scale it will destroy a Country as now there is a large segment fighting for and spreading Sharia Law.

God created the whole earth, why can’t we move around in it.

If you want to open your borders to ISIS or ISIS sympathizers and have them voting in your elections, sure. I don’t though, nations have a right to determine who enters just like you do your home, it would be wrong to not allow anyone who asks to enter your home, but it would also be wrong to have an open door policy for your home.

In Charlottesville, there was only one guy holding a Nazi flag, and that photo was circulated everywhere and made as if they were all Neo Nazis, which was not true. There were knuckleheads on both sides of that, and the media coverage was very biased. I think Trump was 100% correct in his comments on that, so glad he said what he did and didn’t listen to the bias media.

I think so too. Not only that, but if they remain largely Catholic, than such ideologies such as Nazism and pure race nonsense will not get up since they are in contradiction to Catholicism.

I wouldn’t 100% count on it.

Catholicism and Nazism (or lesser forms of Nazism) might be rationally incompatible, but human beings are irrational creatures.

Southern Germany was the birthplace of Nazism, and many nominal Catholics got on board with it. Religion is often appealing to these alt right/nationalist groups because they associate religion as part of a mythical golden past that was much better than the present. That doesn’t mean they are faithful practicing Catholics but they still might identify themselves as one while still holding to some deplorable views.

Without good catechsis, people can and will adopt anything and everything, no matter how absurd. Square pegs will be hammered by blunt force into circular holes. Etc.

I can’t read it all there, but mainly if there is audio or footage, as a primary source I think that is the best rather than a writer’s account that I have to just trust.

There’s nothing comparable to video & audio.

As we can see the higher the concentration of Catholics, the less support for the Nazis .

That’s fine. Even if I can’t understand what they are saying, you can still get a good idea of what’s happening or isn’t happening. Subtitles are the best, can’t stand the voice overs, since it takes away from important tells like tone in their voice etc.

Does anybody know what triggered this protest?
Do they have a lot of refugees from the Middle East?
Has there been an uptick in violence from refugees from the Middle East?
Have there been unpleasant (but not violent) incidents with refugees from the Middle East?
Competition for resources?
There was a vague reference to marching for “Christian values” and “against liberals”. What does liberalism look like in Poland?

Gotta love the side-swipe at Donald Trump (because he quoted a religious song when he was in Poland…or something) because clearly he started it!

Hating on others because of the color of their skin, or their ethnicity–clearly wrong.
