White people have 13 dollars for every dollar held by black Americans

Maybe if he saw people losing their homes b/c the government was spending millions observing the mating habits of aardvarks, he would have. We’ll never know. But I did notice how you deflected my point by changing the subject. 😉
Ok, I will bite on this one. How does government spending cause people to lose their homes?

There were some things that even the Roman Imperial government would not do.

It’s easy to say they should help themselves, and this may be true to some extend, but people in poverty often have certain barriers such as mindset problems, low self esteem, poor nutrition affecting their thinking clarity, poor school performance, chronic stress form living in poverty etc so the well off need to help them.
Help them how?

All of the things you mention above affect Mexicans and Central Americans too, often more severely. And not just them. I know a man who emigrated from Albania into Macedonia (imagine how poor you have to be to want to move to Macedonia) The man acknowledged that if you worked all day in Macedonia you could earn enough just to eat. In Albania, you couldn’t.

He escaped from the then Jugoslavia at age 16 and washed dishes in Zurich until he could get enough money together to come to Chicago to wash dishes. Until he got here, he couldn’t speak English. His wife was chosen for him by his family in Macedonia and sent to Chicago, where they married. The two of them both washed dishes, then when they could speak enough English worked as waiter and waitress. They studied the business, saved their money and now own their own restaurant, which they bought on installments from a retiring restauranteur. Neither had any education beyond the first few grades.

Imagine living in a place until your teens where no matter how much you worked, you really couldn’t quite feed yourself. Pretty stressful I would say. Poor nutrition, definitely.

I personally think some cultures “run aground”, particularly if they are endlessly taught dependency and tribalism. If one reads about black urban culture even in the Depression, it wasn’t like it is now.

so, if there is a homeless family living under a bridge, and the church isn’t helping them, the government shouldn’t use your tax money to help them either.

exactly. this one story proves that if people just pulled themselves up by the bootstraps, we wouldn’t have any poor. as st paul said, ‘if they won’t work, they won’t eat!’

One does need to remember that people like those Albanians are probably among the cleverest of Albanians, considering all they have accomplished. The same is probably true of Vietnamese “boat people” who seem to have done extraordinarily well in this country, despite the wretchedness of their condition upon arrival.

But that cannot truly be said of everybody who comes from south of the border because anybody can cross that border, clever or not. Still, a lot of them do surprisingly well if they’re young and don’t get caught up in the gang life that infects some urban areas.

I think when groups of people have common problems, it is reasonable to ask to what extent the culture of the group is contributing to those very same problems. In our politically correct culture it is anathema to suggest this, but if the culture of that group contributes to their problems, how is it charitable to remain silent about that? As I have said before, there are many factors that contribute to poor economic outcomes for some groups such as blacks. The real question is how do we determine the magnitudes of these different factors. It is only in answering this question that the problem will be solved. Unless the goal was never to solve the problem in the first place.

So, only a big, bloated government can care about people? The guy (Obama) who prevented WWII vets from visiting THEIR OWN memorial in Washington cares? Thanks to profligate spenders of other people’s money like Obama, the people of the church no longer have as much money to devote to local needs. The entire liberal establishment is strangling the churches and families who once formed the bedrock of America.
It is financially advantageous for mothers to remain single today. This corrupt subversion of tax law has been devastating to children, and is responsible as much as anything for the burgeoning of homeless throughout America. But hey, as long as the impoverished keep voting to keep their subsistence checks coming, liberals can claim “compassion”.

a few remarks

Hope we have settled the question of whether SS represents a contractual obligation to pay benefits. It definitely does NOT. Supreme Court decision from 1960 decided that one. Congress is free to do anything they want about SS… Related topic: SS taxes are definitely NOT cordoned off from other sources of tax revenues. There is no separate SS trust account and there never was as the Treasury throws all revenue into one pool. There is a Supreme Court decision for that too, from 1937, if you don’t believe me.

I can no longer find the link, but from the late 19th century up to the 1940 census, black Americans had a higher rate of marriage among adults than whites did. Yes Jim Crow insured a different life for them, but they built their own institutions along the way, centered around their own churches. If the post-WW2 elite had said they were going to purposely trash the black family, they could hardly have done better than what has actually happened since.

But this isn’t race-based, said social policy has deleterious effects no matter the race of the recipients. My eyes were opened when I lived in London and was exposed to the white underclass there which exhibits many of the same pathologies such as fatherlessness, gangs, etc., common to the black underclass here, which was a result of the UK’s social policies which were not that much different from ours.

was it okay when george bush helped the poor?

was it okay when george bush helped the poor?
George Bush was a big government liberal, so the answer is no. For example, he signed medicare part D, which is nothing but a welfare program. So there is no way you can confuse him with a conservative.

Somehow, I think I would prefer the US government and its wasteful practices to the Roman government.
You say that why?

Do you think the Romans taxed at 52% rates?

No, they did not.

unrv.com/economy/roman-taxes.php
In the early days of the Roman Republic, public taxes consisted of modest assessments on owned wealth and property. The tax rate under normal circumstances was 1% and sometimes would climb as high as 3% in situations such as war.
The people who lived in Rome itself in most periods paid no taxes at all other than a poll tax.

Ok, I will bite on this one. How does government spending cause people to lose their homes?
Through property taxes, first and foremost. But it is the taxation increases of all levels of government which contribute to families’ inability to make ends meet. There are hidden taxes in virtually every service you contract, and every product you buy. Governments’ ability to confiscate has far outstripped many people’s ability to pay.
When I bought my home, I had little trouble paying for my mortgage and utilities. And at most, my wife worked part-time and I didn’t really rake in lots of money. We sent all four girls to private Catholic schools through graduation. With sacrifices, we did it. We always drove older cars, and never had cable, for example. But you can’t cut back on taxes which are confiscated if they are not voluntarily surrendered. Where people do cut back is on number of children and marriage. Many live with mom and dad until the folks die.
There is no way I could have afforded my house and children were I a young dad today. Not even close. Governments have become too oppressive. “Progressivism” is definitely NOT compassionate for traditional families, or those who work week-to-week to pay the bills. Rob 😊

Government spending increased every year that he was president.
Reagan had to make deals with a Democrat House every year he was President. Do you think he really wanted to fund the Energy or Education departments, bureaucracies which do not produce one drop of oil nor educate one child? I WISH that Bush and Obama only spent our money at Reagan’s levels! Don’t you?

He did not have to do anything. He had veto power. Nobody forced him to increase spending.

Reagan levels were still way too high.

Ok, let’s see the data. How many people lose their homes because of taxes?

Once again, let’s see the data.
When I bought my home, I had little trouble paying for my mortgage and utilities. And at most, my wife worked part-time and I didn’t really rake in lots of money. According to the data, home ownership rates are about the same as they were twenty years ago. So it would appear that there are many people who are able to afford a house.

You say that why?

Do you think the Romans taxed at 52% rates?
Very simple. Earning opportunities in the US are much greater than there were in Rome. If we had the Roman government we probably would be lucky to make $10k per year. Under our current system it is not difficult to make $100k per year. Even with a higher tax rate I would be on net much better off. For example, you mention a 52% tax rate, but almost nobody pays 52% of their income in taxes. There are many tax avoidance schemes that one can use to minimize their tax burden that were not there in Rome.
