Who are the protesters behind Occupy Wall Street–and what do they want?

1.) The Original Boston Tea Party Was A Civil Disobedience Action Against A Private Corporation. In 1773, agitators blocked the importation of tea by East India Trading Company ships across the country. In Boston harbor, a band of protesters led by Samuel Adams boarded the corporation’s ships and dumped the tea into the harbor. No East India Trading Company employees were harmed, but the destruction of the company’s tea is estimated to be worth up to $2 million in today’s money. The Occupy Wall Street protests have targetedbig banks like Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, as well as multinational corporations like GE with sit-ins and peaceful rallies.

**2.) The Original Boston Tea Party Feared That Corporate Greed Would Destroy America. **As Professor Benjamin Carp has argued, colonists perceived the East India Trading Company as a “fearsome monopolistic company that was going to rob them blind and pave the way maybe for their enslavement.” A popular pamphlet called The Alarm agitated for a revolt against the East India Trading Company by warning that the British corporation would devastate America just as it had devastated South Asian colonies: “Their Conduct in Asia, for some Years past, has given simple Proof, how little they regard the Laws of Nations, the Rights, Liberties, or Lives of Men. …] And these not being sufficient to glut their Avarice, they have, by the most unparalleled Barbarities, Extortions, and Monopolies, stripped the miserable Inhabitants of their Property, and reduced whole Provinces to Indigence and Ruin.”

3.) The Original Boston Tea Party Believed Government Necessary To Protect Against Corporate Excess. Smithsonian historian Barbara Smith has noted that Samuel Adams believed that oppression could occur when governments are too weak. As Adams explained in a Boston newspaper, government should exist “to protect the people and promote their prosperity.” Patriots behind the Tea Party revolt believed “rough economic equality was necessary to maintaining liberty,” says Smith. Occupy Wall Street protesters demand a country that invests in education, infrastructure, and jobs.

4.) The Original Boston Tea Party Was Sparked By A Corporate Tax Cut For A British Corporation. The Tea Act, a law by the British Parliament exempting tea imported by the East India Trading Company from taxes and allowing the corporation to directly ship its tea to the colonies for sale, is credited with setting off the Boston Tea Party. The law was perceived as an effort by the British to bailout the East India Trading Company by shutting off competition from American shippers. George R.T. Hewes, one of the patriots who boarded the East India Trading Company ships and dumped the tea, told a biographer that the East India Trading Company had twisted the laws so “it was no longer the small vessels of private merchants, who went to vend tea for their own account in the ports of the colonies, but, on the contrary, ships of an enormous burthen, that transported immense quantities of this commodity.” Occupy Wall Street demands the end of corporate tax loopholes as well as the enactment of higher taxes on billionaires and millionaires.

**5.) The Original Boston Tea Party Wanted A Stronger Democracy. **There is a common misconception that the Boston Tea Party was simply a revolt against taxation. The truth is much more nuanced, and there were many factors behind the opposition to the East India Company and the British government. Although the colonists resented taxes levied by a distant British Parliament, in the years preceding the Tea Party, the Massachusetts colony had levied taxes several times to pay for local services. The issue at hand was representation and government accountable to the needs of the American people. Patrick Henry and other patriots organized the revolutionary effort by claiming that legitimate laws and taxes could only be passed by legislatures elected by Americans. According to historian Benjamin Carp, the protesters in Boston perceived that the British government’s actions were set by the East India Trading Company. “As Americans learned more about the provisions of the new East India Company laws, they realized that Parliament would sooner lend a hand to the Company than the colonies,” wrote Carp.

I couldn’t find any source citation on that historical accounting, so I don’t know if it has any merit or not. 🤷

I also noticed an interesting comment by someone from the London School of Economics that said the BEI was as private a corporation as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. 😛

It is a widely known fact that the East India Company was an agent of the British government, not unlike to corporations of today. The government is not protecting us against them, it is helping them screw us, like the East India Company was doing to the American citizens. The original Boston Tea Party was a revolt against this idea of government and private companies colluding to screw over the private citizen. A similar notion today would be if a large group (several million) of citizens raided WalMart and took the GE flourescent lightbulbs and smashed them all in the parking lot.

Huge UNION, and Communists behind much of the protests.
This is not a real attempt to right wrongs but to bring down the Republic of the USA’s financial system.

Should be investigated, but Obama’s Holder probably will not.

Government waste, and government spending, and too many government employees is the real problem.

I have to agree that the protesters on Wall Street and the union and political backer of them don’t seem interested in “fixing” the system, they want to destroy it altogether and replacing with the classic Marxist/communist model. They may not call themselves communists, but based on their demands, they are communists nonetheless. The Tea Party wants to fix the system through political channels. These folks seem pretty well intent on committing violence for their cause.

Now, you are thinking like the protestors. WalMart and GE are not government agents.

It’s just a left wing mob. But any mob can be dangerous, and this one seems to be unreasonable and anarchic.
When I first saw the beginning of American Citizens joining in protest for the cause of anger against Corruption with Big Bankers on Wall Street my first thought was that it seemed extreme, especially when seen from a gang-like mentality.

Somehow though I’m not so sure especially how this Wall Street incident has gone viral all over the world with similar protests. Are Americans in protests joining an unjustified cause?

I’m recalling some famous quotes from President Abraham Lincoln

(“Abraham Lincoln’s dire warning on the future of Corporate America”)

**“I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country; corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in High Places will follow, and the Money Power of the Country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the People, until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war” **

Wall Street, Global corporations, and the Federal Reserve are the greatest enemies facing the American people today, but unfortunately it appears that the OWS movement is largely made up of radical leftists who refuse to acknowledge that Barack Obama is a Wall Street puppet himself.

I am a 1%er, just barely into the ranks unlike millionaire CEOs whose membership is quite solid. I am not ashamed of it. I do not enjoy big tax breaks.

I was “kicked” around quite a bit as a kid, found a “home” in academic hard work and achievement, and got my first job after college making under $900 an month. And no, I am not talking 1940s wages either.

I spent 10 more years pursuing an advanced degree. I became a 1%er in my mid-to-late thirties, but not by skimming off the work of others. Everything I do, everything I get paid for, requires me to draw on my 27+ years of training and experience. I leave work mentally exhausted every night. My wife wants to leave me, I have so little time and energy to spend with her. She enjoys most of the fruits of my labor, as I am too tired. I am a medical doctor.

The Wall Street protesters, and all of their backers, and even the president himself can hurl insults at me, spit on me, and even take me out and shoot me if they feel that I haven’t treated them fairly.

I am a 1%er. And I am proud of it.

Former Presidents Mr. Bush and Clinton as are numerous world leaders puppets to Wall Street. Query the Bilderberg Group Membership and you’ll see who the big players are on Wall Street.

“The wealthiest 1 percent of Americans (minimum net worth $6 million) owned 62 percent of the nation’s business assets, 51 percent of stocks and 70 percent of bonds as of 2004, according to the latest data from the Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances – which excludes the Forbes 400. That’s way up from 1989, when the wealthiest 1 percent owned 54 percent of business assets, 41 percent of stocks and 52 percent of bonds.”

Are you really worth 6 million dollars. Wow!

I don’t know about Wal Mart, but GE is in bed with the government. Immelt is as close as a CEO can get to the President.

I don’t disagree with you, but I find it strange nevertheless. How does this fact jive with the “Obama is a leftist liberal communist” meme out there?

Because if anyone calls him a fascist, people will start screaming bloody murder, even though that is closer to his model, state-sponsored corporatism.

“Fascism’s theory of economic corporatism involved management of sectors of the economy by government or privately controlled organizations (corporations). Each trade union or employer corporation would, theoretically, represent its professional concerns, especially by negotiation of labor contracts and the like. This method, it was theorized, could result in harmony amongst social classes. Authors have noted, however, that de facto economic corporatism was also used to reduce opposition and reward political loyalty.

Maybe you’re right - but how does GE benefit from that? Why would they support Obama as opposed to Rick Perry or Mitt Romney?

Oh! You added to your post.

Read a little bit more about the Wall Street Protest group on Jonah Goldberg’s article this morning - about their demands and what their ultimate goal is, at least according to a spokesman, Brian Phillips. Seems a bit extreme.

Sorting Out the ‘Extremists’

nationalreview.com/author/56454/latest

snippet:
Brian Phillips is the head of communications for the NYC General Assembly, the group primarily responsible for occupying Wall Street. I learned about him while listening to National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. According to NPR, Phillips is “an ex-Marine with a bachelor’s in computer science. Today he is wearing a sock on his head.”
“My political goal,” Phillips says, “is to overthrow the government.”
Note: That’s not some random nut job pulled from his Lyndon LaRouche desk or tricked-out refrigerator box/time machine. That’s the communications director for the whole shebang, and his goal is to overthrow the government.
Now, he’s not advocating violence or dictatorship. No, he just wants the government to work on the same non-hierarchical, consensus-based, extremely deliberative form of direct democracy that they’re using down in Liberty Plaza. How that would work for some 300 million Americans remains a bit of a mystery.
An even bigger mystery is what these people want.

Here are the demands. ridiculous.

Demand one: Restoration of the living wage. This demand can only be met by ending “Freetrade” by re-imposing trade tariffs on all imported goods entering the American market to level the playing field for domestic family farming and domestic manufacturing as most nations that are dumping cheap products onto the American market have radical wage and environmental regulation advantages. Another policy that must be instituted is raise the minimum wage to twenty dollars an hr.

Demand two: Institute a universal single payer healthcare system. To do this all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs and hand that money to wall st. investors.

Demand three: Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment.

Demand four: Free college education.

Demand five: Begin a fast track process to bring the fossil fuel economy to an end while at the same bringing the alternative energy economy up to energy demand.

Demand six: One trillion dollars in infrastructure (Water, Sewer, Rail, Roads and Bridges and Electrical Grid) spending now.

Demand seven: One trillion dollars in ecological restoration planting forests, reestablishing wetlands and the natural flow of river systems and decommissioning of all of America’s nuclear power plants.

Demand eight: Racial and gender equal rights amendment.

Demand nine: Open borders migration. anyone can travel anywhere to work and live.

Demand ten: Bring American elections up to international standards of a paper ballot precinct counted and recounted in front of an independent and party observers system.

Demand eleven: Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Debt forgiveness of sovereign debt, commercial loans, home mortgages, home equity loans, credit card debt, student loans and personal loans now! All debt must be stricken from the “Books.” World Bank Loans to all Nations, Bank to Bank Debt and all Bonds and Margin Call Debt in the stock market including all Derivatives or Credit Default Swaps, all 65 trillion dollars of them must also be stricken from the “Books.” And I don’t mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period.

**
Demand twelve**: Outlaw all credit reporting agencies.

**
Demand thirteen**: Allow all workers to sign a ballot at any time during a union organizing campaign or at any time that represents their yeah or nay to having a union represent them in collective bargaining or to form a union.

These demands will create so many jobs it will be completely impossible to fill them without an open borders policy.
