I understand the power part but can you please explain the authority to ultimately.
I believe what Choy is saying is also what I’m saying.

The Priest is not a demi-god, therefore, he does not have the personal “power” to forgive sins.

It is through the “authority” of Christ (in persona christi), given to him through the sacrament of Holy Orders that he administers the sacrament of reconciliation.

ultimately is another line, its not linked to “authority to…” 😃

do i still have to explain the difference between having power and having authority?

I am in the United States Army. The Constitution of the US grants the power to congress to declare war against a foreign nation. I, acting as a representative of the government, carry out that power with my authority to kill members of armies representing said foreign power. I do not have the power to declare war, but I have the authority to carry out the orders of my superiors.

Ministers of Christ do not have the power to forgive sins, but as they are called representatives of Christ, they have the authority to carry out His command to forgive sins in His name.

yup, thats it

the priests are agents of Christ. they act in His Persona, for Him. even in the Bible the difference is glaring. when forgiving sins or curing the sick, Jesus would outright issue the command, “get up…” or “you are healed” and in the case of forgiveness, “your sins are forgiven”. the apostles always say, “in the Name of Jesus…”

Perhaps if you took the time to understand the context of what Paull was saying, who he was talking to and what he was talking about (i.e. the historical context that you still seem to not be able to grasp) then you would understand what this “one mediator” thing is in Timothy.

*Hint: It has NOTHING to do with refuting the Priesthood, nor is the letter prophetic against the practices of the Catholic Church. Context is so crucial.
1 Timothy. This is the first letter to Timothy who was a young church leader. It was written about 64 A.D. probably just prior to Pauls final Roman imprisonment. The first letter to Timothy affirms their relationship.(1:2) Paul begins his advice, warning Timothy about false teachers(1:3-11) and urging him to hold on to his faith in Christ.(1:12-20) Next Paul considers public worship, emphasizing the importance of prayer (2:1-7) and order in church meetings, (2:8-15) This leads to a discussion of the qualifications of church leaders, elders and deacons. Paul lists specific criteria for each office.(3:1-16) Paul speaks again about false teachers, telling him how to recognize them and respond to them. (4:1-16) Next he gives practical advice on pastoral care to the young and old (5:1,2) widows (5:3-16) elders (5:17-25) and slaves. (6:1,2) Paul concludes by exhorting Timothy to guard his motives (6:3-10) to stand firm in his faith (6::11,12) to live above reproach (6:13-16) and to minister faithfully (6:17-21).
Context, context, context.😃

2:5,6 We are sepaeated from God by sin, and only one person in the universe is our mediator and can stand between us and God and bring us together again. Who you ask.
Jesus,Yes Jesus, who is both God and man. Jesus’ sacrifice brought new life to all people.
Contex is so crucial 👍

First of all I would like to salute you for being in the army and willing to fight for our freedom. I spent 10 years in the U.S. Army as a Sgt. My daughter is a M.P. in the U.S. Army and she is currently stationed as Ft.Leonardwood, where I was stationed 30 years ago.
I understand that the priest is acting in place of Jesus. I just don’t see the need for him when confessing your sins.

lol, if I kept that straight, yes.

The man in the black rode sitting in the confessional booth, flesh and blood, can’t forgive anything. He’s just a man.

As noted, it is the sacramental presence of Christ, acting through the Priest, that forgives the sin/sins. So in essence, Jesus is the only one who can forgive the sin, just as you have noted several times. We completely agree.

Sometimes that is where the greatest confusion can come. Non-Catholics think we’re teaching that the flesh and blood is somehow deified and can forgive sins of his own volition, which isn’t true. Only his authority through the Sacrament of Holy Orders can he act “in persona Christi” and bestow the sacrament of reconciliation.

It is Jesus that forgives, through the earthly representative.
Got it 👍 I may not think that confessing to a priest is necessary but I get what you are saying.

Awesome. What was your MOS, brother?

Ok now don’t laugh, I have 2 MOS’s first a wheeled vehical and generator machanic and the second was cook, mess Sgt. Yours if I may ask.
Not unheard of. Actually, a lot of people switch their MOS’s nowadays, for the additional training. Especially the infantry guys lol. I’m a chaplain’s assistant. I’m currently stationed at an armory in SD, but will be leaving to Ft. Benning for RIP.

Hey, I am a 13 bravo, gun bunny. My last enlistment was as a TC, tank commander, Tanker as a secondary MOS. But I got out before I went that route. I was actually getting used to military life again while getting ready to become a military chaplain. Military life doesn’t mix well with my family. So I got out. That makes 4 honorable discharges now. Sgt. was my rank. I got out right before I was about to make e-6 and actually was accepted to OCS, but really didn’t want to go through all that again. Guess we were part of the original green team.😃

Rev Kevin, I have a question. Since you don’t agree with the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and I’m guessing you don’t agree with the Sacrament of the Eucharist, I’m not sure if you believe if Baptism is necessary or any of the rest of the Sacraments, so,why have a pastor at all if none of these are vital? I mean this with all respect, why would someone need a pastor at a Baptist church?

The imputation of Jesus authority unto the disciples and thereby the Bishops and Priests today is both biblical and historical I’m afraid. I know it is a very tough and dry cookie to swallow, but it’s the “Gospel truth.”
Na I just dunk that cookie in some milk and it goes down pretty easy 😃

Yeah… the getting moved around every 3 to 4 years puts a damper on it. I am not sure how my wife puts up with it, exactly. What was your skill level at 13B?

I’ve thought about the chaplaincy. I’d have to return to my native Missouri Synod for that, though. The WELS Lutherans aren’t even a part of the chaplain corp.

Cool My daughter’s, the MP her x-husband was tanker overseas in Iraq for 2 years. Her current husband spent 3 years there has been shot and he showed up right at the place where they captured Sadum Hussien. Right after they go him. He saw him coming out of his hole. Me I liked working on auto’s but I spent about 3 years doing that. I really like to cook and still do. As far as working on cars it has gotten too complicated over a 30 year period.

Why does someone need a doctor. We are there to preach the word of God. To be a shepherd to the sheep. To bring the lost back to God. To comfort those who need comforting. Every preacher, pastor, priest, minister, have been picked by God to do a certain job, task. If it weren’t for preachers there would be many, many who would be out of union with God. Although we don’t believe in some of the same things that others believe, we all have the same thing in common. We believe in God, we believe it is important to be in union with him, that God is the alpha and omega, that God created us, the heavens and the earth and all that is in it, that Jesus died for our sins and provided a path to heaven, and many other thing that we have in common. Every job that God gives you,me, a priest is important. I believe this is where God put me. I believe he called me to be a minister, just like a priest was called to be a priest.

Someone needs a doctor because fo the most part we DON’T know our own bodies and DON’T know how to heal diseases and repair wounds - not our own nor anybody else’s. This presumes that a doctor has special access to knowledge and skills that the rest of society doesn’t have.

But by your theology we ALL have direct access to God for everything we need and need nothing more than to ask Him directly (and/or read scripture) and He will provide all directly to us who need it.

That’s just like saying EVERYONE has all the medical skills necessary (or would have if all were given medical texts and instruments) to heal their own illnesses and treat their own wounds. What need for doctors then? None. What use are they even, if this is the case? None, really.

So, again, what need and use for ministers if we follow your logic? Equally, it seems, none at all.

Even a doctor when he/she is sick will go to see a doctor. Even though one is a doctor, one does not treat oneself.

Similalry when a priest sins he will go to another priest for confession.

So who says we don’t need a doctor?

doctors need to be certified to become doctors. they have to have educational training and they need a license from the state/province/country that they can practice their professions. a doctor in the US cannot be doctor in other countries without obtaining a license from that country.

my question to rev kevin, where did you get your license and by who’s authority are you able to practice your profession?
