Cardinal Tagle is clearly Pope Francis’ anointed successor, but I have doubts about whether or not he would be able to be elected. He’s pretty young, and his election would possibly mean committing to a very long term papacy (which could be attractive to some Cardinals though). He checks most of the boxes for what Cardinals seem to like in a Pope, but I just don’t know if he would have enough people behind him. Pope Francis clearly likes him, but beyond that I don’t get a vibe that he would be a widespread favorite with many other Cardinals.
Cardinal Ouellet would be a good compromise candidate, perhaps, as he has the backing of Pope Francis but his theology is much more orthodox than many of the Pope’s other trusted men. He’s probably the only real electable Cardinal that I would still consider solidly orthodox. The only problem is that he’s already 75 I think so he may not be in the conclave depending on how long Pope Francis lives. He reportedly got a large number of votes at the last conclave but told others to vote for someone else when it became clear that the votes were split between several candidates and would lead to a deadlock.
