Who do you think will be the next pope?

Other than Donald Trump’s, I’m not sure whose votes he’d get. The way he’s going he’ll be lucky not to be either silenced, excommunicated, or a co-host on the Alex Jones conspiracy show.

Cardinal Reinhard Marx is who my money is on. He’s one of the few cardinals that have real proven leadership experience, wheras most of the rest are more like followers. He also has a grand vision for the future of the Church that appeals to those cardinals appointed by Pope Francis, who are now in the clear majority.

Thinking about this isn’t something I spend any time at all doing. Whoever becomes the next Pope will have something unique to teach us. What I want is not relevant. What God wants for the Church is.

I nominate Bishop Thomas Joseph Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island for the Papacy :vatican_city:

So here is my analysis: Cardinal Sarah won’t make it. He is a holy man and an African which would have drawn the votes of the middle liberals as well as the conservatives. But the debacle over the joint book with Benedict has wrecked that option.

Card Tagle is the darling of the liberals but he’s too obviously being groomed for the job and this gets up the noses of the independents.

Therefore my money is on Ouellet, because he is thought to be a conservative but won brownie points with the liberals by not supporting Vigano.

My own preference? Sarah.
Interesting analysis.

I suspect the next Pope will be from Africa or Asia. But Cardinals Tagle and Sarah probably won’t get the nod - the old saying about he who goes into the conclave a Pope comes out a Cardinal. I think it will be someone now considered a darkhorse.

And I don’t think the Cardinals are ready to elect anyone from north of the Rio Grande which would eliminate Cardinal Ouellet. Age may also be working against Cardinals Ouellet and Sarah…I know Pope Francis was in his mid 70s when elected, but I have a hunch that there will be a movement to have a younger Pope after two in a row who were older when elected.

But what the heck do I know? All pure speculation at this point.

I pray this never happens, for the good of the Church. And I don’t think it will. Thankfully.

Perhaps I am too hopeful that the Cardinal electors will follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Yes, they have free will and can choose to ignore the Spirit. We’ll just pray that they don’t do that.
This implies there is a single good candidate.

I would argue there are numerous cardinals who would make excellent popes.

Peter Turkson if Malachi was right.
Parolin is an option.
Schönborn and Ravasi still have a chance.
Tagle is too young, too long a papacy. He is a good man from what I have heard.

The Holy Spirit will choose, as will the electors. There is no opposition between those. If Isaiah can call Cyrus the Messiah, I am the Holy Spirit can work through any choice for Pope.
I say of Cyrus, My shepherd!
He carries out my every wish,
Saying of Jerusalem, “Let it be rebuilt,”
and of the temple, “Lay its foundations.”
Isaiah 44:28

As a baptized male, I am eligible to be elected Pope. If elected I will decline for the good of the Church. 😃 We may have a shortage of priests in the West, but there is no shortage of people who think they should be Pope, or at least be a close advisor because they know more than the Pope.

I would love to see Archbishop Chaput of Philadelphia to be Pope. There is little doubt where he stands when he speaks, even if he is already 75.

John XXIII, Benedict XVI and Francis were all over 75 when they were elected. 80 might be a cut off age, but 75 is not.

As someone rapidly approaching that age, I do not see 75 or 80 as an absolute barrier for the right person. 75 is the age where bishops must offer their resignations. Archbishop Chaput is not a cardinal, so his chances would be greatly reduced as a retired archbishop in the US when the cardinals are meeting in Rome.

Great Quote.

As a piece of fiction I quite liked The Young Pope, Jude Law played a super conservative Pope and while there was nudity in the run of the season, it didn’t depict anything really bad about the titular “young pope”, again it was pretty good as a work of fiction.

The New Pope (follow up season) was complete garbage that should be avoided at all costs.
