Hey Guys!

I thought this would be an interesting topic, Who Goes to Hell?

Now, Your answers should not be judgmental and the purpose of asking this is not to judge people, but to study our religious texts on the subject of a “Place where the bad people go after death”

My stance is that some people do go to hell and it seems to be eternal:

Revelation 20:

10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

It seems to me that the Lake of Fire = Eternal Punishment and that Satan, the Beast, the False Profit, the Fallen Angels, and some People on this earth will definitely be going there and that the punishment does not end. I think Jesus reiterates this point:

Mark 9:47-49

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48where
" ‘their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched
.’[a] 49Everyone will be salted with fire.

It seems that Jesus is talking about regular people who are sinners that can go to hell and the statements he uses are Eternal statements. It also seems to match the Eternal Punishment that is described in Revelations where “They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever” is talking about the Beast, the False Proffit, and Lucifer/Satan/Belial and
“Everyone will be salted with fire.” is describing the evil trinity above + All People thrown into the lake.
The ones who have not only commited but also died in mortal sin and are un-repentant. No repentance and no contrition.

It is similar to the fallen angels…un-repentant and lacking contrition.

This is too deep a subject to reduce it to a survey form.

That is fine, if you want to believe that.

You may live with that belief hanging over your head, always wondering whether cleansing will be short, long, depending on what terrible sins you’ve committed while in the flesh.

Here’s what Jesus said: Joh 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Have you drunk of that living water yet? And if you have, what purgatory does it make?

If you are not cleansed upon drinking of that water, then perhaps you should consider a purgatory, for the water you drank was not the one Jesus spoke about.

This water, Jesus spoke about, is everlasting water (Life), spring up in you to everlasting life.

Of course I believe this because it is written in Scripture. “Saved but only as through fire.”
**Those who, after Baptism, lapse into sin must not be rebaptized, but obtain pardon for their sins through true pennance;
All Christians should seek after purity; perfection, and righteousness. Catholicism merely approaches this goal with the utmost seriousness by maintaining that some purification will be necessary after death for most of us, since holiness is a prerequisite for entering into the presence of God (Rev. 21:27).
Protestants agree that real holiness is a requirement for Heaven, but disagree with the purification process, believing instead in some sort of instantaneous transformation at death for the redeemed.
In Protestanism, both salvation and ultimate glorification are essentially one-time events, whereas in Catholicism, they are durational processes.

Scriptural evidence of Purgatory:
Psalm 66:12 “Thou didst let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet thou hast brought us forth to a spacious place”
(Water as baptism, and the fire of Purgatory)

Ecclestiastes 12:14 “For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing; whether good or evil”.

Isaiah 4:4 “When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning”.**

I agree with you there.

The point is to introduce who the Father is by Jesus Christ and that by Jesus we all have access to the Father.
If then, Jesus is the door to the Father, would it mean then that Jesus is the Father?

And if, Jesus is the only door to the Father, does that mean the Father is limiting only to the saved and not to the lost?

Who are the lost that can not be saved? Is everyone first lost, and then possibly saved?

Jesus said, “I came to save that which was lost”.

In that paragraph above firstmode, you are in your mind limiting the Hindu’s, the Muslim’s and all other religions who do not meet your mindset.

Original sin is the sin of eternal separation which comes to all mankind born in the flesh and in need of a rebirth.

All mankind, not just the Jews, Catholics, Muslim’s, Hindu’s and all others.

You tell me which one of all of them does not die in the flesh, and then I will believe that that one has eternal life.

Don’t we know that to have a rebirth we must first die? Or else, why call it a rebirth?

Jesus said, “Joh 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

Thirst = seek

Regardless of what belief we were born into, God is to them what God is to you.

You define God in your own terms, or in how you wish to declare Him.

If you met a Hindu in America, would you try to introduce your faith to them, invite them to church, and lead them to know Christ?

Do you think the Hindu should stay Hindu? What do you think of Missionaries? Do you think that Missionaries should not spread the Gospel?

You answered many questions in your last post, but you have not answered the questions about the great commission, that the Gospel be spread to the 4 corners of the whole earth. What did Christ mean by that? Was the Apostle Thomas wrong to go to India and plant churches there and introduce Christ to the Hindus and the Animists?

Your posts have a lot of content in them, and they bring up many interesting points, but please answer the question about the great commission so I can understand you position. I truly want to know if you think Paul should have spread the gospel on his missionary journeys and if Thomas should have planted churches and spread the gospel in India.

thanks!

I am confused what you mean by my mindset. I suggest reading the book by K.P. Yohannan called Revolution on World Missions, Here is the link, they will mail the book to you for free, it is a great read:

mygfa.org/offer/freebook/?cm_sp=Free-Book--Homepage--Creative-A

K.P. Yohannan is an Indian male, who runs Gospel for Asia. He is trying to evangelize all of India and Asia for Christ. This is from an Indian Man who grew up and spent most of his life in India. He has been stoned and had had countless things done to him because he is spreading the gospel. He has been around Animists, Hindus, Sikhs, Jainists, Atheist intellectuals, etc in his missionary journeys around India yet him and I have a similar mindset. Without Christ there is no salvation. If you practice Animism and worship a statue of a snake and nature in general, then you are going to go to hell when you die. There is no presence of God nor salvation in that statue or belief.

Still waiting for look3467 to answer my post number #82 :coffeeread:

If you commit murder tomorrow are you still going to Heaven?
Hi OneTrueCathApos, hello again. Silly question brother, really, now, could you not go and confess it first and then commit murder…ah sorry for that…only kidding…

First thing is a saved good living person would not commit murder!! The Holy Spirit lives in his heart and it would go against his new nature.

However, just for arguments sake, he got really angry, lost his temper and lashed out and the person fell banged their head and died…ok…yes he could go to heaven, because like yourself he would confess his sin to our Advocate in heaven Lord Jesus Christ and yes he would go to heaven.

He may have to spend a while in Prison of course…

Bye the way where do you get the Last Book of the new Testament being written in 100AD??? All the New Testament writers would have been long dead!! I believe 50AD is more accurate, John who wrote Revelation was an old man at the time, but 100AD is pushing it too far…huh???

So God bless jam. Michael.

Ps The first Pope did not come on till the bishop of Rome took power after Pagan Rome was sacked and finished up…Peter needed a Saviour too so does you pope…

Hey Brother…gotta love those Seventh-Day Adventists… anyway, the first of the New Testament Books were not written until about 45 A.D. Only five out of the twelve wrote down anything at all that has been preserved to us; and of that, not a line was penned until at least 10 years after the death of Christ, for He was crucified in 33 A.D. and the FIRST book was not written until about 45 A.D.
Most importantly, remember that the church came BEFORE the New Testament…

Simple, but wholly inadequate. We are all sinners, but not all of us will wind up in Hell.
Explain how the statement is in adiquate. Have I misrepresented those who are in Hell? Are there those who are not sinners who will also be there? Did I say all sinners are in Hell? Certainly all those in hell are sinners but not all sinners are in hell. Is your conscience offended? If so why?

I thought it was closer to 55 AD. or 50-55 AD. Which would be 20 years later. And many of the ECF quote Aporchryphal books not listed in the Tanakh or most protestant bibles.

The thread question is “who goes to Hell?” You said “sinners.” Since we are all sinners, and we don’t all wind up in Hell, your response was inadequate. To say the answer from a Catholic perspective is simply “sinners” implies that there is no other criteria. “Unrepentant sinners” is the simple, Catholic answer.

From a Catholic point of view (especially when you read St. Augustine) you find that all people are on their way to hell. However, the Grace of God delievers those of us who freely accept is gift of Faith and live according to it. To put a Caveat seems to me inappropiate since its the original condition. The question then becomes "who does not go to hell " which is the question that is ultimately being responded to. It was not the question of intent. BTW if you are a sinner and are regenerated by Christ and are alive then once you received the fullness of salvation (attain heaven) are you still a sinner?

Wow Sambos what a thought provoking post…Personally I think we all have the tendency to sin so we will eventually sin I try to separate original sin which IMO is the tendency to sin with actually sin, those acts and non actions that are offensive to God and others.

But are we sinners after the grace?..probably, we may not be when we die and enter the pure spirit of God…but it would only be with Gods grace, nothing we do or do not do.

I think people who go to hell choose hell, at some point in their lives that make a choice to go there…give over themselves to horrible lives and actions…on the other hand people trying very hard and with their heart to be good and follow God how could he not adore them for that. 🙂

Hi OneTrueCathApos, I am glad you love Seventh-day Adventists, um small d on the day by the way, we don’t worship the ‘day’, we worship Lord Jesus Christ…

Yes regarding the dates, my brain cells are getting old, you are QUITE CORRECT!!! 100AD would be Correct, that would make John the Apostle between 90 and 100 he being the youngest Apostle…

Thank you for that brother OneTrueCathApos. Michael.😊

Everybody is going to hell. (Romans 3 & 6, IIRC). It’s basically a place WE built by sinning.

But God has chosen to be merciful and offers us all the Grace to be saved through his son, Christ our savior. How he judges individuals is up to Him, but it is my expectation that He will do so based on how that indiviual responded to the opportunities of Grace that he was offered.

It’s OUR job as christians to be agents of the offering of Grace to the world. It’s God’s job to judge at the end.

Wow ceeceex2 I could not have put it any better myself!!! That is absolutely SPOT ON, 100% ACCURATE.

I agree totally. As Lord Jesus said’ You are not far from the Kingdom of God’!!

Are you a lady? just get the idea that you sound feminine, sorry if you are not…but women tend to be more spiritually minded in a gentle way that men I find.

So, anyway thanks for that, I like to give honour when honour is due. Michael.🙂

Of course I believe this because it is written in Scripture. “Saved but only as through fire.”>>> OneTrueCathApos
Then you have to believe that the fire of God cleanses all sin, enabling salvation via spiritual.
Also, that it is spiritual, therefore no regards to the physical.

The physical has nothing to do with salvation, for with the heart mankind beleveth unto salvation, and not of any works of the body.
Those who, after Baptism, lapse into sin must not be re-baptized, but obtain pardon for their sins through true penance; >>> OneTrueCathApos
The Baptism of which you speak there is physical, for you speak of penance which is a physical act.

While the Baptism by fire is a spiritual action, which is one inwardly and one which God alone can do regardless of the physical.

In the spiritual, there is no penance, for it is a gift.
**All Christians should seek after purity; perfection, and righteousness.>>> **OneTrueCathApos
You are absolutely correct in that respect but only as a personal accounting while in the flesh, which is justified by “what you sow you shall reap”.

As for the spiritual side of salvation, only God is responsible, and in which He failed us not by Jesus.

Catholicism merely approaches this goal with the utmost seriousness by maintaining that some purification will be necessary after death for most of us, since holiness is a prerequisite for entering into the presence of God (Rev. 21:27).>>> OneTrueCathApos
That is truly and honorable and desirable action to please God and in which the windows of heaven are opened up unto you.
Protestants agree that real holiness is a requirement for Heaven, but disagree with the purification process, believing instead in some sort of instantaneous transformation at death for the redeemed.>>> OneTrueCathApos
I am a Protestant by description, because I am not Catholic and will state that only the righteousness of God is satisfactory requirement for entrance into heaven.

Question: Which one of us can meet that requirement?

Ref: Amo 5:7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,
Amo 5:8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:
The requirement for salvation: Is the righteousness of God on us!

And that can not be earned in any way shape or form, except God gifted it to us.
In Protestantism, both salvation and ultimate glorification are essentially one-time events, whereas in Catholicism, they are durational processes.>>> OneTrueCathApos
I have no objection to your view.

My view is instantaneous re-birth and glorification follows as my spirit grows in maturity.
Glorification is this: 2Co 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

If I suffer for Christ, I glory in my sufferings for His sake and not for my own.

There is no difference between what you are saying and what I am saying in this respect, God in Jesus gifted us both salvation via His gift of righteousness (Unearned and unmerited) via Jesus Christ.

Now, you wish and choose to worship God via the Catholic Church which is a desire stemming from your heart and one in which God is glorified by.

I choose to retain a daily walk, meaning that my thoughts are ever conscience of His intimacy with me as I live and breathe by His spirit in me.

I deny no one their form of worship, for I have no access to the thoughts of their heart, just the reflections of what is there.

If I can lead some to new understanding without injuring their current understanding, then I believe that they will be a step better.

When the word say: Work out your salvation that is exactly what it means.

The gift is yours, do something which it!

If the spirit of God lead me to introduce Jesus to Him, Yes! For only then would he be prepared by the Holy Spirit to receive.

As for my church physical, I have none, but I would, if he desired study with him to further his education of Jesus via the Bible.

I believe God sends missionaries and prepares the hearts of those to whom He wants to receive.
A Hindu was born a Hindu not by choice and therefore, if he were not to ever hear and believe in Jesus, God saw to it that at death He would meet Him and be saved.

But if, he were to hear and believe while yet in the flesh, he would begin to enjoy the benefits of his eternal inheritance and glory in the process.
You answered many questions in your last post, but you have not answered the questions about the great commission, that the Gospel be spread to the 4 corners of the whole earth. A newspaper should proclaim the news, not make judgments.

The good news is, the best news for all mankind, and one in which should be proclaimed
throughout the earth as per Matt. Mat 28:19

Jesus is the light of the world, and many are there who can not see it because they are in the world.
If we can shed some of His light for them to see, then we are accomplishing the great commission, even if it is to our own next door neighbor.

Remember though, if our lives do not reflect Christ in our actions, our testimony will not be creditable.

Blessings, AJ

There is but one name that we are saved by and that name is Jesus Christ. Very clear cut.

Then you weren’t paying attention in school… And er…Catholicism is not seperate from Christianity, we are Christianity seeing that we were in fact the first Christians. Protestants came only 500 years or so ago.
Only if you refer to the name “Protestant” rather than the condition–that is, a Christian sect that is different from Catholicism. The Cathars (Albegensians, they of the 'kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out" fame) were around in the early 1100’s. Of course, that’s about when the “Great Schism” happened, too.

Of course, before the word “Protestant” was grabbed onto, those who disagreed with the Church, separated themselves and went their own way were described with another word: “heretic.”

…and THOSE have been around from the beginning: from your own site (catholic.com/library/Great_Heresies.asp) We find that people have been doing THAT from the first century AD. (shrug)

But you are quite correct; Catholicism is not ‘apart from’ Christianity, since Christianity encompasses all those who base their beliefs around the teachings of Jesus Christ (though not everybody agrees precisely upon what those teachings actually ARE.)

Actually, he could have been far younger than that; in fact, the actual date is debated; between 68-69 and 95-98. As well, there is some textual evidence that indicates that the John who wrote the Gospel isn’t the John who wrote Revelation.

Suppose he is the John of the Gospel; Jesus died when He was 33. Though HE was born in year 0 (give or take two or three years) it doesn’t necessarily follow that the John who wrote Revelation was–or that the John who wrote the Gospel of John was; he could have been 10 to fifteen years younger.

So if Revelation was written in 68-69, John could well have been in his early fifties; not at all an impossible idea. Even if the book had been written around 95 or so, John could easily have been in his early 80’s…also not an impossible idea.

Diana, just musing…
