I’d love to get a Switch one day, but sadly I don’t have the money at the moment. I’ll have to stick with my 3DS!
I have a switch as well.

One thing i like about the switch is that Skyrim is coming out for it.

So no more playing on my xbox 360 which seems to keep freezing up.

Yeah I may ask for one for Christmas, especially since they’re going to make a Pokemon game for it. Skyrim should be fun too.

Of course i wonder when skyrim comes to the switch, whether it can be modded.

I let the cash back accrue on my credit card rewards program for just such purchases. :o It’s definitely a neat little gadget. I’ve never had a handheld system before, so it’s a new experience for me using the Switch in handheld mode.

Yeah the credit card rewards was a good idea. And if you wanto try a new handheld, I recommend the 3DS, it’s pretty user friendly and you can get some good games for it. I mainly just use mine for Pokemon though.

I actually really really loved Breath of the Wild. (I know my posts might not sound like it, but it’s true! :p) It definitely earned all the rave reviews it got. I’m sure I’ve clocked in more than a hundred hours on it, which is something I almost never do. And honestly, I haven’t played the other Zelda games in years, so there’s probably some nostalgia coloring my view of them.

Part of me kind of wants to revisit those older games now to see how they hold up, but another part is worried I might be so spoiled with BOTW that I won’t be able to enjoy them anymore haha.
Okay, I started playing Breath of the Wild now and it is a great game! I always have high expectations for any Zelda game, but I was a bit unsure when I started hearing them talk about not being bound to all the familiar Zelda conventions when creating the game. No hearts to be found in the wild, no farming for rupees by cutting grass, weapons that break, dungeons that can be completed in any order—I wasn’t sure what I’d think, but it is really well done. I love that Link can actually jump and climb. Items like the bombs and bow and arrow appear early on instead of several dungeons in. You’re not limited by four bottles but can carry a whole ton of everything.

The world in the game is just so massive, and there’s so many things to do and try. I also loved Skyward Sword, and thought I would miss the more on-the-rails experience, but I really don’t. Of course, I was always the type to seek to find out what my next objective was and where I was supposed to go and then promptly go in the other direction just to talk to the characters and see if there was anything to be found. I’m thankful in this game that they actually track all the sidequests. That was one thing I was particularly worried about with a world this big. But now I can just read the little reminder and remember that I was supposed to be helping this or that character.

It’s going to take me a while to get through the game, though!

There are a lot of games I’d like to play on the 3DS, but I’ve resigned myself to not having one. I can convince my wife that a home console is also great fun for the whole family. I’d be less successful in convincing her the same about a handheld. :o

lol That’s understandable.

I love that you can climb in this game also. It opened up so many more options. I really hope future Zelda games will at least keep that mechanic, even if they don’t stick with the open world format.

I don’t know if you’ve found it yet, but in one of the shrines in between the Dueling Peaks there’s a treasure chest with something called a climber’s bandana. It boosts your climbing speed, which is extremely helpful when your trying to climb up a mountain but don’t have enough stamina to make it. I went most of the game without it so it’s not that essential, but when I finally got it I wished I had it the whole time. Would have made those times I was climbing a tower in the rain that just wouldn’t stop a whole lot less frustrating!

Funny you mention that as I just found that shrine and bandana. It’s the last thing I did the last time I played. I haven’t put it on yet, but it’s good to know that it makes a difference. I’ve been contemplating just using my orbs to focus on upgrading my stamina meter before the hearts. I can always cook food for hearts. But I always seem to run out of stamina just a smidge before I reach the top of a mountain or tower. 😛

I still have only made it to 4 or 5 of the towers and a dozen of the shrines. So I have a long way to go.

Yeah, it would be hard to go back to not being able to climb things in a future Zelda game. I can’t imagine the bug testing process for this game, though. With so many different ways to interact with the environment and get to where you want to go, that had to have been a lengthy process. I can understand why they only release a Zelda game once every 5 years.

Whats so great about skyrim? Is it overated
It has its flaws, of course, but it’s a genuinely great game. Huge world to explore and not very linear. There is an overarching story but you have a lot of room to be creative and do your own thing.

There’s actually a whole set of climbing gear you can get, though I only ever found two of the three. I thought I read somewhere if you get the whole set you can climb in the rain, though I don’t know for sure if that’s true.

Hearts are helpful later in the game when the enemies get tougher but yeah in the beginning it’s just a lot of fun to have high stamina. Makes it easier to catch horses too.

And I can’t imagine all the work that went into this game either. The Zelda series really is one of the few video game series left where the developers seem to actually care about making the best game they can rather than just rushing to meet a deadline. That’s why I don’t feel so bad about dropping sixty bucks on it. 🙂

I do remember picking up at least one piece of that climbing set, I think it was the shirt. I’m not actually sure that I ever found the bandana, how I don’t know because it sounds like it should have been the easiest to find. By the end of the game I was carrying around so much junk I probably would have been able to find it in the inventory easily anyway lol. The climbing gear comes in handy because Link sure likes to climb in this game. He seems to like it a little too much. I seem to remember trying to fight one of those random cyclops bosses just hanging around the map and having Link randomly turn around and try to climb the side of a cliff as the thing is closing in on him because I backed too far into a corner apparently :dts: I think he smashed me for about 15/18 hearts, knocked over a tree, and then proceeded to pick the tree up and run after me. That was kind of entertaining, not gonna lie.

Did you beat the game yet? I think in an earlier post you said you were stalling due to having too much fun riding grizzly bears (which I did not know you could do :D). I still have to get around to trying that combat challenge in the DLC, which I already bought but haven’t downloaded yet. I started replaying Okami recently so I have to finish that up first. If you have a PS3 you should check it out. Speaking of Zelda, it’s essentially a really good Zelda clone, except the characters come from Japanese mythology. The main character is a divine wolf, so it is very Twilight Princess-esque.

I’m going to give it another go. I have played it before and it seemed good, but i lost interest. This is possibly due to the fact that i had all the cheats on and could kill people in one strike with a sword.

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned dead space. Isn’t that one of the greatest video games ever made?

Yeah, the 3DS is pretty nice. I bought one about 3 years ago and play it from time to time. At first I thought I might not like a handheld as much as an ordinary console, but I actually really like getting to play it on the couch or sitting outside on the porch when it’s nice out. It saw a lot of use when I was going through a bit of a stressful time at the end of graduate school and started playing Pokemon obsessively on it (instead of writing my thesis 😊).

Actually if you don’t already know about it, you should look into the spinoff Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. The first two were on the regular DS and the second two were both 3DS. I discovered it about a year ago and although it could still be “kiddie” at times (like all Pokemon) it was actually really good. Some of the plot elements and twists were rather shocking for Pokemon, which made it seem more serious than ordinary Pokemon. The second one, Explorers of Sky, was actually really, really well done IMO. The gameplay is non-traditional though, instead of wandering around catching Pokemon, you play as a human that’s been transformed into a Pokemon (determined by this silly personality quiz it makes you take at the beginning lol). The game consists in completing randomly-generated dungeons as the story progresses with the player character, his friend, and recruited Pokemon taking turns moving around or attacking enemies with moves from the main series as they navigate the dungeons.

Ha yeah I did finally beat it. I don’t know if it’s because I waited so long and had collected so many hearts and weapons but I found the last boss a little…easy? I didn’t die once, and I’m not that great of a player. In fact I had a lot harder time with those centaur creatures than the final boss. Those guys were annoyingly tough!

I thought the castle itself was a lot of fun though. The classic Zelda music playing in the background while you’re in there was a nice touch. I didn’t even realize how much I missed it until it started playing and I was like “yay!!” 😃

I’ll check out Okami, it sounds fun. I don’t have a PS3 but I believe the PS4 has a subscription service that lets you stream older games. I might have to look into that.

Yeah, I thought the final Ganon fight was too easy as well. The first part of the battle was actually somewhat difficult. I would technically be lying if I claimed to not have died during this process, but I did not receive a game over. I’m being deliberately ambiguous to avoid spoilers but I think you probably understand how I was bailed out ;). The final Ganon phase was actually pretty epic looking, so I kind of wish it were more difficult. Now that you’ve beaten it it’s obligatory that you go on YouTube and watch someone go right to the castle and beat Ganon with a couple of sticks with Link in his underwear lol 😃 Never did beat one of those centaur things, although that’s probably because I totally forgot about the backflip “flurry of blows” move or whatever it was called until I watched the YouTuber decimate Ganon with it in his underwear.

Agreed, I thought the castle was fun. I kind of just climbed all the walls and got right to the boss the first time, but then after that I wandered around and found some interesting things. The Hylian Shield is in there so if you haven’t found it you should go back and look for it.

Yeah, it is a hidden gem that originally came from PS2, but they have an HD version on PSN now. The only negative aspect of it for me was that, like many other things aimed at adolescents these days, it contains some crude themes/humor that make a few of the conversations juvenile. Nothing shocking but still would have been nice to not have. That’s probably what earned it the T rating instead of E, since otherwise it was exactly like Zelda. Still a lot of fun to play though. It ended up getting a sequel on the DS, Okamiden, that was also really good. I’ll have to replay that one soon too.

I haven’t been on this forum that much recently, but it seems like the forum is being migrated to a new system in the next couple of days? I wonder if this means game over for this thread. Sorry, someone had to do it :p. It looks like I have the oldest post since the original poster isn’t around these parts anymore. I reread most of this thread this past weekend and was somewhat amused by some of the dopey things I posted in the past haha :D. We had been anticipating BotW for quite a while looks like. It’s surprising a thread like this lasted as long as it did.

Wow I’ll have to watch that video because I can’t imagine how he could do that! No extra hearts or stamina either? That’s insane.

Yeah the flurry move is basically the only way to kill those centaurs. Though I also found mounting them like a horse and hitting them with a sword pretty effective. And fun. Yep. You really can do that! You obviously can’t tame them, but it’s pretty entertaining.to watch that fearsome beast flail around like a bucking bronco for a few seconds. 😃

I actually did find that shield, sort of by accident really. That was another fun surprise. I went into the castle the back way by raft and ended up by the prison, so that was the first place I explored.

I had kind of forgotten how long this thread has been alive. I hope it transfers over to the new place. I like geeking out about video games with you guys. 👍

Funny. I’ll have to look up that Youtube video once I finally beat Breath of the Wild. 🙂 I’m just taking my time exploring and finding shrines. So far, I’ve just run away from those centaur guys (and the guardians). I did take out one of the giant Cyclops guys by patiently bombing him from above. It was funny that, after shooting him in the eye with an arrow a couple times, he started walking towards me with his hand over his eye and just peaking through to see where he was going. It’s those little touches that make the game so much fun. 🙂

I finally figured out how to get my Wolf Link amiibo up to 19 hearts. He follows me around and takes out wildlife and enemies. It’s pretty handy!
