After watching the Mass this morning, something that I had read popped into my head .I always smile when I recall this story. It comes from the book, *Pope, Council and the World by Robert Kaiser [Time Magazine}. *
The author was at the Council and recounts this story about Cardinal Ottaviani who was at wits end with some of his more liberal Fathers at the Council.

“Cardinal Ottavani left his seat-not to return for two weeks. Ottaviani aides at the Holy Office offered no explanation for his absence, but some of the sidewalk theologians had the perfect story. It was not a true one, but somehow it caught the spirit of the occasion. The very next morning, went the story, Ottaviani came out of his apartment and found no chauffeur. He quickly hailed a cab, told him, “To the Council,” and the driver drove him to Trent.”

Watching the Mass this morning I feel like I have been driven to Trent.*

I am old enough to remember the Latin Masses also. And you are right, there were times when the Mass was rushed. I went to a Catholic grade school and we had to go to Mass every day. However that was then. This is now. Things are different. Having the Mass “banned” for all these years has brought the reverence back. Maybe this was God’s plan all along.I don’t believe you will see “Tobacco auction” Masses ever again.
I agree. Now the people who are clinging to the tradition actually “get it” – they are beyond exemplary!

I just watched the Daily Mass on TV (EWTN) here in Canada. I don’t think it is the same one you guys watched. Fr Pavone was doing the homily. It was beautiful though.

I haven’t watched it yet, it’s recoded and waiting for me at home, but I was under the impression that any priest could offer the Novus Ordo in Latin without any special permissions. It is still the primary language of the Church.

Is this still true (was it ever true)? If so has anyone ever been to a NO Mass in Latin? How does it compare to the USCCB translation and the TLM? I’m sure the TLM is much more symbolic, but do people feel similar about a new Latin mass as they do about the extraordinary form?
Also can anybody draw comparisons to a Byzantine mass? We are fortunate to have a small monestary in our town, but I’ve never attended mass there.

DEFINITELY not the same Mass. That was the Ordinary form from the Irondale campus. The “big” Mass this morning was down in Hanceville.

I hope my wife is home by 6 tonight, so we can watch it together. She is Byzantine and has only been to the NO of the Roman rite with me. I think she thinks the Eastern rite is more reverent. I want her to see this. Yes, my pride is showing a bit, but I’m Roman Catholic!
Check the schedule. IT’s not listed to be re-aired until midnight EDT. The earlier Mass will probably be the one from Irondale. Set up your recorder!

I caught bits and pieces. I think it is always emotional to be a part of history-in-the-making. I thought it was a beautiful Mass, and I think there will be many fruits to come from it.

Thanks to EWTN and the FSSP for taking such a bold step - not just with the Mass, but all the round table discussions and positive coverage. The secular media (and even some “catholic” media) has been so negative about this. More than anything, allowing people to actually see a TLM will give them a chance to experience it and decide for themselves if this is something they want to invite into their parishes.

My pastor is anti-Latin. Anti-TLM.

I sent him an e-mail in the middle of it that said:

"I know this is not your cup of tea but I have the live broadcast of the Tridenting Latin Mass from Hanceville, AL playing on my computer right now. It is MAGNIFICENT!

The homily/sermon (now playing) is sensitive and deft.

I hope we can see a little melting on this subject in our parish. As a Convert, I have no sentimental attachment to this form of the liturgy but it speaks deeply to the heart."

Just double checked it. The dtv guide says high mass at 6pm. If it’s not on, I’ll try to stay up because I have no recorder. Thanks, Tim

I watched it (didn’t read your question well my first post so I edited)

I so want to meet Fr Pavone, my sponsor has and she’s part of the aposlate with him.

Good luck! Are you in the Hanceville time zone? If it’s going to air at 7:00 EDT, I’ll tape it. We have cable.

Great email. It is think kind of approach that I think will win people over.

Thanks for the affirmation. I try to be like Chinese water torture. Hoping with each little drop to make a dent. Our liturgical coordinator HATES Latin and HATES the idea of celebrating *ad orientem. *I suppose we are all familiar with the high passions this stuff elicits? From both sides. I try to be reasonable.

I’m watching it online right now.
And this sermon is absolutely fantastic!!! 👍

Anyone else watching?
If you read this after it finishes, what did you think?
We’re supposed to be praying the rosary during the TLM, not writing internet forum posts! 😃 😛 😉

He is saying this to everyone?
Yes. It is suppose to be said in its entirety(sp?) to every communicant.
Edited to add about Fr. Goodwin who preached. He said the first TLM I ever served. He was a Jesuit at the time, and the original priest of our Indult community in Maine. We lost him when he left the Jesuits and joined the FSSP. This summer we were fortunate enough to have two Masses celebrated by him, and a wonderful talk on the motu proprio.
