After watching the Mass this morning, something that I had read popped into my head .I always smile when I recall this story. It comes from the book, *Pope, Council and the World by Robert Kaiser [Time Magazine}. *
The author was at the Council and recounts this story about Cardinal Ottaviani who was at wits end with some of his more liberal Fathers at the Council.
“Cardinal Ottavani left his seat-not to return for two weeks. Ottaviani aides at the Holy Office offered no explanation for his absence, but some of the sidewalk theologians had the perfect story. It was not a true one, but somehow it caught the spirit of the occasion. The very next morning, went the story, Ottaviani came out of his apartment and found no chauffeur. He quickly hailed a cab, told him, “To the Council,” and the driver drove him to Trent.”
Watching the Mass this morning I feel like I have been driven to Trent.*
