Fr. Mitch Pacwa tends to give really awesome homilies šŸ™‚ His show ā€œThreshold of Hopeā€ tends to give the true explanations for various Magisterium documents. šŸ™‚

Fr. Mitch Pacwa: Homilies on target with plenty of bible history. His ā€œOpen Lineā€ is one podcast I can’t miss every week. Maybe he doesn’t know about one idiosyncracy he has but it marks him as a thoroughly human *alter Cristus. *Almost every answer he gives the callers on his radio program he prefaces with ā€œHere’s the thing. . .ā€

A close second would go to Fr. Anthony Mary.

Father Joseph Mary tops my list. His knack for connecting stories of everyday lives with the gospel and lessons learned is terrific. Next is Fr. Anthony, with his sense of humor and good timing. I watch the 8am mass everyday just to listen to the homilies before I go to my daily mass at 9am. Fathers Wade and Mitch are such good preachers and teachers; I learned a lot from them. A good homilist is someone who can engage you, a good storyteller, if not a good teacher. Father Mark gives good substantive homilies, but the delivery sometimes leave much to be desired. There is now a new priest, Father Leonard, and I think with practice, he could be a good homilist. I miss Father Pavone with his passionate and fiery homilies. I hope he is OK.

I do not like using the word ā€˜favourite’ but I am fan of Life on the Rock, Fr Mark Mary.

Father Anthony Mary, hands down, in fact I only watch the mass when he comes in, I love the tone of his voice and what he has to say for me in my life he makes sense her sermons are always interesting and of todays life struggles. I just can’t say enough about him.

Thanks,
Maureen

Father Anthony Mary is my favorite of all, because he is truly a peaceful, and humble man of God. As it is often said, the camera doesn’t lie. That camera picks up every nuance, even little voice inflections, mannerisms, and charisms. He communicates from the heart and soul with great kindness and compassion. The true nature of an individual cannot be rehearsed. No, it is genuine. Father Anthony does not come off as a know it all, or ham. You can tell he is a loving, caring, and gentle soul. I believe he is a natural in the Franciscan order.

Growing up, I remember one very special Franciscan priest who came from a local monastery to say Mass at my parish, or the neighboring parish every Sunday. People would find out which Mass he was scheduled for at either parish, and they made it a point to attend at that place and time. He was wonderful. And he was such a good preacher and teacher that his scholarship, although at a doctoral level, was easily understood by children in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. He had a gift of making people feel good about themselves and Church teachings as he reasoned through magnificent homilies and interpretations of the gospels. How uplifting that was.

Father Anthony is like that as well. I could listen to him for hours.

My favorite priest on EWTN is Father Anthony. I think his homilies are to the point and are delivered in a friendly and insightful manner. Father Meneze’s homilies are always very informative although lengthy points, numbering, can get a little burdensome. I really enjoy listening to the new priest, not Father Leonard, who’s homilies were very good and his delivery was very good. I cannot understand why he has not received more air time whereas Father Leonard has been a regular.

I don’t think they schedule it to give the priests ā€œair timeā€ like a TV show would. I think they just follow a regular Mass schedule. They are priests and this is the Mass. It just happens to be on television.

It isn’t a cheesy sitcom or talk show. It isn’t Oprah or Dr. Phil.

Fr Benedict Groeschel! He is knowledgeable, compassionate, funny, and well-spoken.
I like Fr. Groeschel as well. He has never recovered from the accident which left him so immobile. Great guy with an outstanding memory of his early years. I love to hear him reminisce.

Perhaps ā€œair timeā€ was the wrong term to use. I have been greatly impressed by Father Patrick Mary and would like to see him scheduled for some of the Daily Mass’s. He’s an excellent speaker and his homilies are always very informative and inspiring.

After Father Leonard and Father Patrick were ordained, Father Patrick was assigned to Our Lady of Angels Monastery in Hainesville, and Father Leonard to the chapel, hence he officiates mass on a somewhat regular basis. Father Anthony and Father Joseph are two of my favorite homilists, because they are able to connect life’s events to the scriptures. Father Wade and Father Mitch, on the other hand, are good teachers, and I learned a lot from their homilies. I guess with more practice and exposure, Father Leonard would get the hang of giving homilies.

Thanks for the information. I was not aware that Father Patrick had been reassigned. Concerning Father Leonard, I kind of root for him because he is from East L. A. , a place I’m very familiar with and enjoy visiting. His homilies are improving everyday. I don’t think it’s the message but the delivery that is a problem. Most people would be a little nervous not only having to deliver the homilies mostly with scarce notes but to millions via television and radio.

I agree with you concerning Father Anthony and Father Joseph. At my parish church I always enjoy homilies that connect our daily lives with what the scripture reveals. One of our resident priests who I enjoyed for many years has not said mass in over a year due to his age, 85 I believe, and very poor health. He has been at our parish since 1975 and considers it his home and wishes to die there, not in a hospital or rest home. Father Wade and Father Mitch are great teachers although I believe Father Wade gets too caught up on lists

Fr. Bill Casey, CPM, is, hands down, the BEST priest I have ever heard. Listen to him on You Tube and see if you don’t agree. I have some DVDs and CDs of him that blow me away. I do love the EWTN priests, but sadly, they have poor speaking skills, they speak in monotones, and are boring to listen to. Fr. Casey commands your attention from the first word. Fr. Wade Menezes and Fr. David Wilton, also Fathers of Mercy, are awesome too. You can hear their homilies on the FoM website.

I never missed the Daily Mass on TV, and I am disappointed that lately the Homilists, not necessarily EWTN priests, but the newly installed Deacons, are not doing a good job of engaging the faithfuls. I always look forward to Frs. Anthony, Joseph, and Pacwa, but it seems they do not appear quite often. There is a Deacon who gives homilies that will really jolt you from your stupor - his name is Deacon Sievers Burton(?), but he also appears rarely. I am disappointed that EWTN is blowing up a perfect opportunity to share to the world the Word of God, since it is a popular Catholic station that is viewed and listened to worldwide by the faithfuls. And yet, it seems that they do not pay particular attention to the kind and quality of homilies that go out there. There is a difference between a homily that really comes from the heart and based on life’s experiences, and one that is memorized, and oftentimes, it is painful to watch a priest presenting his memorized piece. Perhaps EWTN should realize that it is not a local chapel patronized by members of its community, but a channel with wide and international flock. And embarrassing to admit as it may, I tune in to the televangelists, who are passionate and engaging in disseminating the Word of God to, and there I learn and absorb a lot.

The Deacons have to learn to give Homilies too. What they say is more important than how they say it. We can all learn from the truth no matter how it is presented.
Ever stop and think you may be learning and absorbing the wrong thing. If you are embarrassed to admit it then you must know it isn’t good. God Bless, Memaw

Do you understand what a Mass is about? We are Catholics, not protestants. The Mass is said for the people present at the Mass. It is televised for those infirm and unable to attend.

It is not a slick television production. This is not some crusade by a televangelist. This is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Read your Catechism. Learn about your faith.

Yes, I UNDERSTAND the mass. I GO TO DAILY MASS to receive the Eucharist, AFTER I’ve listened to the homily on EWTN daily mass. Our Parish Priest does not do homilies on weekday masses. I READ THE SCRIPTURES inside out, I’ve READ the CATHECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, so that must give me a good idea of what the mass is all about. We have a ROSARY GROUP after every mass, and a BIBLE Study once a week.

YOU ARE MISSING the point that I am trying to make, and I am sorry that I did not express it in a language that is easily understood. The Catholic Church is not attracting that many people anymore to attend mass; we have 50+ regular mass goers, half of whom are in their advanced years. Perhaps catholics have reasons why they are not avid churchgoers, and one of the reasons would be that it does not offer them that much engagement. You do not drive to church everyday, sit in the pew and doze off, because nothing arouses your senses and your understanding. And if the Catholic church have the same arrogant attitude, as those who chastised people like me who took the time to write a piece on its concerns, then so be it. I would not be surprised of its imminent demise. And I guess I would not be wrong to look for another religion that will suit my quest and my thirst for the profound meaning of faith.

Memaw,

I understood fully well what you are trying to say. You and I also can give homilies, and what we are going to say will also be equally important. And NO, I am not absorbing the wrong thing. I have a mind of my own, I’ve read the Scriptures inside out and we have Bible studies often. What I am trying to say is, IT IS EMBARRASSING THAT I HAVE TO TURN TO OTHER STATIONS to be able to get a good dose of the word of God, because my own religion and its bearers of God’s wisdom are simply not getting the message across to people that the faith is trying to attract and invite back.
