Who loves anime here?

I don’t appreciate having some of my favorite shows being called sentimentalist garbage. I hate sentimentality as it’s an unrealistic depiction of feelings. Compare a picture of Saint Anthony looking up to the sky with a simpering look as if his life was all fun and festivities with a picture of Saint Anthony feeding happy in ecstasy and holding the child Jesus as He is being given to the saint by Mary. You have the diffirence in then world.

However, when a situation is unrealistic bu the feelings are realistic and as long as it is executed tastefully, I enjoy an anime you’d otherwise call ‘exploitative’. And don’t think I’m not disgusted by excessive gore or actual exploitation. Case in point: Genocyber is nothing but pure gore for the hell of it. I saw a video of it on you tube. I saw Elfen Lied, loved it and it didn’t affect me. 14 seconds of Genocyber I was scarred for life and wanted to throw up. There is also a 6 episode anime called Mnemosyne or something. After reading a description about it on TV Tropes, I concldued that I was NOT going to watch this anime, not if you gave me a billion dollars.

Another case in point, only with an anime that does have gore until the last episode at least: School Days. I heard School Days was pretty bad so I wanted to see it in order to experience a bad anime so as to be able to enjoy good anime again after watching the MASTERPEICE that was FMABrotherhood. I didn’t laugh. At all. School Days was a very unpleasant experience. It can best be described what would happen if Jerry Springer or Maury made an anime. You get a group of people who through their mean spirited and selfish actions ruin their own lives and that of others but instead of feeling sorry for them, you’re supposed to enjoy their suffering and laugh at their idiocy. Thats what School Days was. It disgusted me to no end and had a HORRIFYINGLY BAD ending. It’s what I call pure exploitation because while the situations and the reactions of the characters were somewhat realistic, I felt no emotional connection to any of them. I didn’t care ebcause the anime gave me no reason to care.

Another case where events like rape and murder are sued so as to elicit emotion out of the audience in a contrived way: Ayashi no Ceres. I already said how much I hate this manga for it’s moronic characters. In one instance, Aya, our main ‘heroine’, follows the man she fell in love with after talking to him for 5 minutes into the building in which she knew her cousin was residing. She also knew that her cousin was planning on killing her together with her family. She also knew that the building probably had security as it was all so high tech and stuff. She follows her lover without bringing any weapons and without planning anything and oops, she gets captured. Now in order to rbing out her supernatural powers, her cousin tries to rape her before he is stopped. Thats what I call exploitation: writing a contrived event just for the hell of it.

I also hate how many harem anime always have to involved our main heroine having some attemtped rape happen to her. Kaichou wa maid sama, Ookami san, EF tale of memories, etc… now rape can be dealt with tastefully like how Berserk deals with it (even the protagonist was once raped as a child) but in these instances, it was nothing but a cheap ploy in order to make our female lead more sypathetic or attractive in a sick way.

My point is, as long as a subject is dealt with love, attention and written in a smart way, together with the intention to make people cry instead of making them vomit through disgust, it’s not exploitation. It’s only exploitation when your intention is to make people laugh at the gore and the suffering of our characters or simply to make them feel uneasy just ebcause you’re a jerk.

Madoka Magica is SEINEN. It’s not meant for kids, it’s meant for people who were kids and fans of magical girl shows in the past. No, the girls in PMMM are NOT children, they are teenagers, 15 to 16 years old and trying to find a purpose in life.
Yet they look and behave like little girls and unlike any real teenagers of 15/16.
Yes one can put a disclaimer, no character is under 18, but a flat chested baby faced character who is incredibly immature in superficial behaviour and dresses like a little kid is not going to be a teen. And even if so, 15 yo’s are also kids. Goodness gracious.
I tried finding a purpose in lfie when I was 16 too and it was what lead me to my conversion to Catholicism. Not only that but the fact that the girls are suffering intensely because they are magical girls IS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE SHOW. It’s supposed to be tragic because a magical girl being happy fighting demons or witches or something is an unrealistic thing, just as a boy being forced to fight giant robots and being happy while doing it is not a happy thing. AT ALL. It’s called a deconstruction. Also, what one arth do you mean by slaughtered? There isn’t NAY gore in PMMM. One of the girls gets her ehad bitten off but it’s far from grapic and for such an exploitation anime, PMMM has one of the greatest and happiest endings I have ever seen in my entire lfie ever.
Magical girls don’t exist in real life.
Magical girl shows are mainly shows watched by little girls in Japan. There is also a B type audience, namely otakus who enjoy shows about little girls. This even frightened parents in Japan because imagine taking your daughter to see a movie and the theater is loaded with 18+ y/o otakus. I’m not making this stuff up.

You can’t bring in children this way because this is pure nonsense. No such thing in real life exists. Children do not do these sort of things. When they do these sort of things in some subtle way - as in child soldiers in Asia/Africa/South America the situation is different and we can relate because
  1. It’s a real tragedy. With real people, right now, having these problems.
  2. We can try to do something about it by raising awareness of the situation.
Magical girls don’t exist. Magical girl shows are shows for little girls.
But of course perhaps it’s cool to have baby faced children with squeaky voices play characters with immense weight on their shoulders because this is really the only type of character the target audience relates to. Seeing a real life 9 year old who carries an AK-47 right now is not something an otaku (often lolicon) audience will relate too.
Er, they DO fight each other, almost to the death. I get what you’re wanting to say: losing your parents to a wizard is realistic because while wizards don’t exist, lots of children lose their parents and grow up in abusive home; yet for a bunch of girls to suffer a lot as they dredge through lfie with the world on their shoulders, it is unrealistic. But thats the point of the show, it wants to show what would happen if magical girls really did exist, if magical girls were realistic.
Magical girls don’t exist except outside of a genre of shows for LITTLE GIRLS, shows which are mainly happy go lucky shows. There is no reason to create an absurd situation where kids fight this way. It’s the worst kind of contrived story imaginable.
I can;t say PMMM taught me anything. Higurashi however taught me how important it is to have friends to trust. Thats one of it’s themes. It also told me a great story because in the end, the story is resolved not thorugh the children by themselves but with a lot of help form the olice and adults. That, and there were child serial killers before, insanity does exist and thats what makes Higurashi so scary.
More power to you. Again there are better ways of portraying this.

Child killers are an extremely rare phenomenon. They’re no something one should glamourise.

Anyway don’t take this personally if I criticise your show and fail to understand the fixation about baby girls who have to do unspeakable things. This kind of thing obviously generates shock value, it’s cheap and gimmicky. There are so many better things out there.

I’m not saying the show is bad because it shocks. I have numerous reasons why I dislike PMM. As said the story is contrived and unrealistic. It’s based on a false premise which does not exist in real life - Magical Girls. Likewise it generates shock by having baby faced kids who we all would want to keep out of the front-line IN the front line. This is pure cheap gimmickry.

Excuse me but that’s simply a matter of taste. There is no difference between School Days and PMM except that in School Days the characters look older. But it’s similar garbage. That the story struck a chord with you in some way, good for you, but it’s more of the same sort of contrived thing. I don’t want to spoil your take home message. If it takes such a show to teach you self sacrifice, commitment and emotional torture, don’t mind me. There are better ways of doing this though. Such films usually win a festival award (not Oscars) but something like Sundance, Cannes, Venice, etc.

I’ve only watched Ookami San out of this lot. I must admit that the accusation of rape in the story was handled gracefully. No rape was shown. We only saw the after-effects on the co-lead character when she met her would be rapist again. The animator actually captured the character’s pain quite well in that instance. I would say this anime is superior in this regard. It had no fanservice, no gore, no pseudo-sex and I would give it a decent score for bringing this out in a subtle way without you know having the gore or shock of PMM / Elfen Lied / School Days.

Good for you. I of course disagree. I would suggest you go and see something better like NOBODY KNOWS, ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU-CHOU and a long 3hour film called EUREKA. All are Japanese. The last won a Cannes Award. I’d also recommend Grave of the Fireflies if you want to see art and not schlock in anime.

Really do yourself a favour and rent/buy these movies. They don’t have magical girls and they’re more subtle but they’re more realistic and non exploitative. I think the take home messages are better than standard self sacrifice/betrayal/etc.

In the real world we do have tragedies involving children.

We have child soldiers in Africa.
We have child prostitutes in Thailand and Vietnam.
We have hundreds of thousands of war and HIV orphans.
We have kids who are victims of mines.
We have little kids living with AIDS whose treatment no longer touches the virus.
We have children dying of cancer.
We have abuse secondary to alcoholism, poverty, and other ills.
We have children who lost their parents.
We have children born with disabilities.
We have children who survived abortion whose parents wanted them dead.
We have victims of abortion/war/etc.
We have little girls who undergo genital mutilation.
Etc.

Such things happen, here and now. To contrive stories about Magical Girls is ridiculous. Anyway, just more of my cents. Bah-humbug. Life is too good for Japanese otakus to contrive such tales.

You assume that it takes a lot of gore and tragedy in order to convince me something is good or bad. False. My msot favorite anime of all time, Rurouni Kenshin, while sti having some over the top action has a lot of sad moments, one involving a villian who killed his entire family because they abused him horribly while another villian in the manga wants to kill Kenshin because Kenshin (accidently) killed his sister. These two villians are depicted as sympatethic but non the less evil.

Also, whats wrong with otakus watching magical girl shows? The creator of Mazinger Zeta was the person who created the magical girl concept with cutey honey and to my knowledge, it was seinen. It wasn’t meant for kids as it had a lot of fanservice. Fanservicy shows don’t appeal to me at all but the idea that magical girl shows are only for little girls is rubbish. While I never watched it, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is seinen and lots of people watch it for the fight scenes and character development. It’s like saying a mecha show is supposed to be targeted towards teenage boys whears many mecha anime subvert their tropes like a lot of Gundam series, Linebarrels of Iron which has a villian protagonist and of course, Neon Genesis Evangelion which is very, VERY depressing.

I find it hard to accept the idea that kids are going to be scandalized at having grown ups watching Sailor Moon. In fact, if I had kids, I’d show them Princess Tutu in order to teach them about Ballad and watch it with them. Thing is, while lolicon is wrong (obviously), I don’t think every otaku out there who loves these kind of shows is a lolicon. Case in point, I love sweet stories like Hayate no Gotoku and Clannad ut I watch these shows for the story and the characters and not for any fanservice. Case in point again, I avoid shows which are pure fanservice like Bakemonogatari which was horriblly boring and sexual.

What I’m basically trying to say is I do’t actively search out schlock. If there is gore and tragedy in an anime, just as long as it’s used tastefully and within context of the story, I don’t mind it. I love sad stories as they make you think about the tropes you’ve been seeing all the time in the past. Monster for example decostructs the idea of a complete, irredeemable monster. It inspired me a lot on regarding sinners, even the worst ones as still human and besides, it was written by Naoki Urasawa, the author of 20th Century Boys. It’s good. It’s not going to be good, it IS good because anything Urasawa writes is an utter masterpiece, full stop.

OK Tenofovir, I think I understand why you wouldn’t like PMMM; not even I like it so much as to call it one of the greatest anime ever. However, what I don’t understand is whether or not you like anime or works of fiction with fantastic elements or which are depressingly sad. Other than Grave of the Fireflies, which incredibly sad anime would you call your favorite? Do you like horror? Also, what do you think of Baccano? It does have villian protagonists and is rather gory but it’s actually a vey upbeat and cheerful anime. I think you’d like it.

Guys, quick question:

On a percentage scale, how absorbed would you be in an anime if you already:
  1. Have watched 8 episodes already
  2. Are coming up with your own fan characters
  3. Can’t get the opening song out of your head

Very absorbed, although I rarely create fan characters in my head.

1 or 3 wouldn’t mean I was that absorbed by an anime, since I always sit through all of a show if I start watching it, and I have a collection of soundtracks for shows I didn’t like but I liked the music. But if I were coming up with my own fan characters (hasn’t happened yet, I lack creativity) I’d say I was totally absorbed in that case.

It’s official then… my mind is now one of those trapped in the world of Aincrad. @_@

To anyone who knows what I’m talking about: You a beta player by any chance? >_>

Thats a hard question answer exactly. I usually watch two or 3 episodes of an anime if it’s long to determine whether I’ll watch it. If those episodes do nothing for me, I drop it. Case in point, Bakemonogatari was just constant talk about sex and fanservice during it’s first two episodes without any deep meaning. Dropped it. If you do create fan characters, I think you’d be pretty absorbed in the story.

Say guys, I was just wondering: why are my tastes so diffirent from your huh?🙂

101% maybe? 😛 I’ve had numbers 1 and 3, but I haven’t the urge to do number 2 yet.

Say guys, what do you think of Berserk? It truly is one of the greatest stories I have ever read and a masterpeice in every sense of the word. Like oh my gosh is great. It’s also the only manga to scare me scare me. Seriously, who else isn’t scared by all the horrible stuff that happens in Berserk?

It is pretty messed up. It’s been ages since I read the manga but I remember that I enjoyed it, despite how messed up it was. Kind of like Akira. Enjoyed that but thought it was seriously weird.

😉

I enjoyed the manga, the anime, and the Dreamcast game back in the day (still have and listen to all the soundtracks), but due to the glacial pace of the manga’s releases and the fact that the author seems to have no intention of providing closure in the foreseeable future, I don’t really follow it anymore. I just check every year or 3 to see if he’s finished the current arc or not.

Yeah, I get what you mean. 300 chapter in 20 years, gosh, thats too much. Kenichi has almost 500 chapter and it’s been running for 10 years.
