Draws characters better than any mangaka I can think of, at least now. In his early years, Belldandy et al looked pretty bad. I can’t read the early vols of the manga because of that, even though it is one of my favorite anime.

Thus far into the Fall season, my favorite two series are probably shojo ones: Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun and Kamisama Hajimemashita. Where do I turn in my man card?

Also liking Robotics;Notes (spiritual successor to Steins;Gate) and the new Hayate. For some reason, I find myself watching Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo.

I want to pick up Psycho-Pass and Code Breaker as well, if time allows.

Thats a hard question answer exactly. I usually watch two or 3 episodes of an anime if it’s long to determine whether I’ll watch it. If those episodes do nothing for me, I drop it. Case in point, Bakemonogatari was just constant talk about sex and fanservice during it’s first two episodes without any deep meaning. Dropped it. If you do create fan characters, I think you’d be pretty absorbed in the story.

Still… I just can’t help it. It’s something I’ve been doing since my earliest days of anime fandom.

The hard part is I can’t find an outlet sometimes. T_T I’d talk about my new fan characters here but it doesn’t look like many of you guys have picked up on what many of my friends are watching. (I can’t really share it much with them since they’re not into fan characters much either.)

well time for an update on my part

Sword Art Online: A dull story that seems like it wanted to rip off the .hack series but lost heart half way through and went with a romance route ( a poor one at that). I have friends who read it and promise me it gets better but eh, I dont see it happening.

Accel World: I actually thought this would be bad but its rather entertaining and emotionally investing. Main character is a short, overweight kid who is bullied, is socially awkward and finds his only escape in online games until the ‘prettiest and most popular girl’ gives him access to Burst limit, a video game that is tied in with an ability to speed up a persons perceptions to the point time seems to stand still. Characters are enjoyable and grow throughout the series and its good to see a main character who is actually flawed in a believable manner.

I don’t know man… Compared to the usual harem/reverse harem stuff I often encounter, I think SAO’s love story is actually better and more focused upon.

At the very least, you have got an OTP that’s actually official earlier in the series.

Kirito does have his playboy moments though. =.=

Saw the second episode of Hayate no Gotoku can’t take my eyes off you. Loved it, even better than the first episode as it had more content and a lot more funny moments. Ayumu singing AMAZING GRACE was hilarious not to mention the fact that Nagi’s alleged sister Rurumi knows Systema and actually won beat up Hayate pretty badly. The opening song is great although I don’t get the opening itself. Speaking of music, the music is as good as ever, not extraordinary but enjoyable and endearing.

I also want to know what the theatrical bits with Ruca are about. I love how she is getting a lot of focus in the manga right now. Also, episode 3. I can’t wait to see it as it is going to be about Hinagiku. She is after Hayate, my second most favorite character in the whole show. Also, is it me or does Hayate’s design look more improved over the last episode? His hair looks shorter and more like himself. Dear animators: thanks. Also, dear Hayate and Hinagiku: please start going out. Signed: the fans.

On Hayate in general, I always say that it’s very sweet and heartwarming. It’s one of those series I can enver get tired of watching no matter how many times I watch or read it because it truly has everything I ask in a good anime or manga: foreshadowing, great characters and an actually well constructed plot. It’s also not as perverted as other harem anime: non of the main characters are major jerkasses and while they do have their moments, they never cross the line of being bullies or obnoxious. The main character is also very good and enjoyable: he averts nice protagonist syndrome by actually being interesting and nice in a not very saccharine way. He’s the charmer but not an obnoxious one. He’s a nice guy but not without his limits. He’s just a fun character all around and so is everyone in the cast (except Fumi)

All the character designs except for Nagi’s are worse compared to what JC Staff did, and the Ruka segments are out of place and quite frankly bizarre (including the ending). The segments between Izumi and her Mom are nice, but the ones between Fumi and Sharna are annoying. Also, they dropped Norio Wakamoto as the narrator. This is inexcusable.

The opening is nice, and Ruri amuses me, sort of.

Yeah, the Ruka bits are a bit too bizarre and ‘dramatic’ for Hayate and yeah, Fumi is annoying, REALLY annoying. She’s one of the few characters I hate simply because they are really annoying. The JC Staff designs were great. When I think of Hayate, I think of him as a bit bishie but at the same time handsome. Also Norio Wakamoto. He’s, one of my most favorite Hayate characters. Honestly, no joke here. After the characters and their relationships, he was one of the best parts of the show. His interaction with the characters was absolutely, utterly hilarious and it was obvious the seiyuu enjoyed himself. His voice just sounds SO sarcastic and condescending but in a funny sort of way. Combhat Bahttille Storee!

AS for the ending theme, I like it. I like the visuals in it fanservice aside. Speaking of Ruka, I want to know how her relationship with Hayate is going to develop.

If I had to find any faults with the anime and manga, it would be that season 1 had a lot of great episodes which were retconned out in season 2 which is a bummer because episode46 in the first anime was very, very sweet. However, season 2 more than made up for it by delivering one of the most heartwarming and sweet moment in anything ever when Hayate actually holds Hinagiku on the balcony in order to show her the view. It has everything that makes Hayate so great. There is no pathethic crying melodramatically, no moment killers (thank goodness!), it’s all show no tell and coupled with to great characters, it was just a great scene all around. Season 2 also had a lot more extremely funny jokes. While I missed all the references and shout outs from season 1 (all the Eva references made my jaws hurt with glee), the scenes where Wataru does a comedy routine and when Hayate goes to rescue Nagi from a spaceship only to find out who was actually driving it were PRICELESS.

Say chapman, since we’re the two biggest Hayate fanboys here, what do you think of Ruka and Hayate himself? Personally, I always liked Ruka. She’s charming like the other girls and also very nice. As for Hayate, he’s a genuinely nice guy. Yes, he’s intentionally so perfect, a parody sue but unlike other Mary sues, Hayate actually has problems and is socially awkward but at the same time, the girls love him instead of berate him and we actually believe that anyone would love this guy. He’s also BADASS.

In conclusion, to compare Hayate to other harem comedies would be an insult to Hayate because it so so different, so much more well written, so much less filthy (fanservice aside) and so much more genuinely heartwarming unlike most harem comedies (well, except Clannad and Haruhi Suzumiya those are very good).

And I went on another Hayate rant. Sorry but am I boring?

Say guys, I always wanted to be a writer so I just wrote this list for kicks. Here is a list detailing the ten greatest anime characters in my opinion:

Whenever I want to read a book or watch an anime, the first things I look out for are unique and interesting premises and interesting characters. And while anime in general does have a lot of them, there are a select few character who are so unique, inspiring or mysterious that you start calling them ‘your favorite character’ or something. Here, I’m listing the 9 characters whom I like the most. I say 9 because I couldn’t find anyone worthy enough to be at number 10. Oh well! They are:

9. Isaac and Miria from Baccano.

Baccano had a ton of great characters and in my opinion, one of the greatest character casts ever. However, if there is or rather, there are some character that do stick out from even this cast, it would definitely be fan favorites Isaac and Miria. They’re a crime couple, committing crimes in order to make themselves rich or for ‘great justice’ later on but unlike the other thugs from Baccano like Ladd Russo or Claire Stanfield, they’re far from psychotic or bloodthirsty and the crimes they pull off are so audacious and silly yet ingenious, you can’t help but laugh and cheer for them as they pull off their crimes (yes, robbing a bank and escaping on a train is how you pull a train robbery. Genius!). The two also have great chemistry between each other; both have their heads in the clouds and both are always cheerful and idealistic in their views of life but at the same time, it’s obvious there is a great and mutual love between them and this great mutual love is one part that helps them pull of their crimes.

8. Yuki Nagato from Haruhi Suzumiya.

I was originally going to go with Rei Ayanami on this list instead of Yuki but after a few seconds of consideration, Yuki was the definite winner. Both are very similar with each other because both have very great difficulty showing their emotions but slowly release them as their series progress, both share a mysterious life and past and both are, well, cute. Come one, don’t tell me Yuki waving a computer mouse around wasn’t cute. Please. However, while both are very interesting, Yuki was just so much more interesting than Ray; she’s an alien android and seeing her, an alien android release their emotions and open up to people was so sweet and heartwarming. The anime, with it’s very, very good animation showed her always serious face change ever so slightly, be it a look of surprise when Kyon did something diffirent in the time loop they were stuck in for years and years or a subtle gesture of content in the form of looking up into someone’s eyes. Yuki was just a great character all around and one whom you wanted to cuddle for a better reason other than that she was cute (which she is mind you!).

1. Hayate Ayasaki from Hayate no Gotoku.

Face it, most harem anime suck (note: I said most, not all of them) and their male leads aren’t any better, being losers or the butt of abuse of most of the female cast. However, Hayate no Gotoku not only avoids a lot of these tired tropes but turns them over their heads and does something totally new with them. For one thing, Hayate, the male lead begins as a loser and almost becomes a delinquent but because he is such a nice guy and a charmer, the girl he tried to KIDNAP instantly falls in love with him and unlike most harem anime, Hayate isn’t needlessly abused by any of the female cast. He does get it once in a while but those moments are relatively rare and almost all the females in the cast love him alot in one way or another. But Hayate makes this list not only because the character is featured in a unique plot but because you actually believe that the girls would fall for him. He’s absolutely nice, charming and for us readers, he is also inspiring and relatable and unlike so many utterly perfect people in fiction (‘cough’ Edward Cullen), he suffers a lot, makes bad decisions along the way and in one point of the manga, he find great difficulty choosing between being loved by his girlfriend and letting his other loved ones be happy. He’s the type of guy not only girls would fall for but whom guys look up to when treating girls.

6. The Elric Brothers from FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood.



Hey, wait a minute, the Elric Brothers are two characters! Whatever. The Elric Brothers make this list because, despite them being both being great characters on their own, the two together are their own character, much like Isaac and Miria are to wards each other. Both had to live through tragedies in their lives and witnessed horrifying events and both feel guilty for not being able to save someone that was dear to them. Edward especially feels guilty for dragging Alphonse into his plans to resurrect their mother in which they failed and only cost them the loss of Edward’s limbs and Alphonse’s body. But Alphonse doesn’t hate Edward; in fact, he wants to help Edward regain their bodies and actually trusts him and looks up to his big brother. They also do things which normal brothers do, providing a great dynamic between them and this dynamic proves crucial to them in the grand finale of the series. Brotherly bonding and guilt complexes aside, the Elrics are also great determinators and really embrace the idea of unbreakable resolve. No matter what happens, they WILL get their bodies back, absolutely, and they WILL save as many people as they can.

5. Shinji Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion.



Evangelion is a deconstruction of typical mecha shows, much like how Watchmen was a deconstruction of superheroes. What would really happen if a kid was forced to fight giant monsters and seeing tons of carnage everyday? However, contrary to what detractors say, Shinji isn’t exactly a whiny brat. For a whiny brat, Shinji definitely had to pass through a lot of suffering, culminating in the events that lead to End of Evangelion and for a whiny brat, Shinji certainly was brave. He not only decided (with some force form his father Gendo) to fight the Angels on his own (as evidenced when he refused to take the train when he was fired from his job as a mecha pilot) but he saved Asuka from falling into a volcano, saved Rei from dying of burning after their fight with Ramiel, went out on his own to beat up Zeruel when he saw the city he lived in was in danger and throughout the first half of the series, he actually becomes more social with others, especially with Rei and Misato. Even in end of Evangelion, when he loses he totally loses his sanity, he still comes back and more emotionally strong than ever after all he passed through. It makes one wonder: if Shinji was brought up in a different environment, would he have become the emotionally unstable wreck he was reduced to?

4. Lucy from Elfen Lied.

While my feelings for Elfen Lied mellowed down and wouldn’t even put it in my top ten favorite anime or call it great, I still think it’s very underrated. One of the reasons is the character of Lucy. Lucy has got to be one of the most complex characters in anime history. You can’t decide whether she’s good or evil, whether she’s sadistic or just needs a hug. My opinion? She does have a sadistic side because even she she kills out of self defense, she still kills people sadistically and wants to make her most bitter enemies suffer. However, and completely setting aside her alternate personality that is Nyu, she still has a soft side. The only times in the anime where she is shown to enjoy hurting someone are when she dismembered Bandou and Nana, the former mostly for trying to kill her, the latter out of revenge against the man who imprisoned her but at other times, it’s clear she’s not enjoying it. It’s clear that the only thing preventing her from going on a full blown rampage against the entire world and killing thousands of innocent people is her love for Kouta whom she met when she was a child and the first person to actually show her kindness. She has a HUGE guilt complex and seems afraid to approach Kouta because she did something one would deem pretty unforgivable… This all makes her such a complex and interesting character but a tragic one at the same time. It truly takes talent to make a mass murderer sympathetic.

3. Guts from Berserk.

Question: when you hear the word manly (NO CHUCK NORRIS JOKES PLEASE! No, really, none of that ****) and anime together, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Most people would answer Goku from Dragonball or Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star (ATATATATATA!!!) but personally, I would answer Guts the Black Swordsmen from Berserk. Not only is he more realistic then these two (as realistic as knights wielding a giant sword in one hand and an arm cannon in the other go) but Gut’s life is just proof of how manly he is. If the Elric Brothers follow the code of unbreakable resolve, then Guts IS unbreakable resolve itself. Guts always lived a very horrifying life, suffering from betrayal, seeing his comrades die by said betrayal and even sexual abuse and yet, even if the whole world and the heavens (or in this case, hell) is against him, Guts will always push destiny aside and live life for life itself. Unlike other anime protagonists though, Guts is much more brutal and morally gray as a character. He isn’t evil although when the series began, he was no better than the demons he fought but he does develop and goes over his monstrous persona and when the opportunity comes to better himself, he’ll take it. Berserk can best be summed up as the story of a man who lives for life itself vs. the story of a man who uses people for his own selfish desires.

2. Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin.

Kenshin Himura is in my opinion the greatest shonen hero ever: he’s not a boring hero who constantly gains new powers as the plot progresses in order to defeat enemeis stronger than him, he’s not some overpowered messiah who can solve every problem he has on a whim and unlike most heroes, whilst having a dark and troubled past he is still the kindest man you could ever know. He’s still flawed of course; he’s always taking the weight of the world on his shoulders, tyring to prevent others from getting hurt and he still has his bloodthirsty Battousai personality waiting to burst out. Speaking of his Battousai personality, the reason behind his refusal to kill his enemies is very interesting and I won’t spoil it here. Kenshin in my opinion is to anime what Superman is to comic books; he’s the kind of guy you truly look up to in order to be a good person and alot of idealistic anime heroes were definitely influenced by Kenshin in one way or another. The reason Kenshin isn’t number one on this list is because of…

1. Dr. Kenzou Tenma from Monster.



Whereas Kenshin is the type of person you look up and aspire to be, Tenma is more realistic. Both Kenshin and Tenma were realistic in that neither of them could stop or prevent every evil that happened in the world and both of them are just ordinary men. But Tenma isn’t as strong as Kenshin; nobody is. If anyone was ever framed or had to stop some huge conspiracy, they wouldn’t become Kenshin, they’d become Dr. Tenma. Tenma is also one of those character whom you’d call ‘incorruptible’ except he is actually done right and this trope is deconstructed. Tenma is always on the precipice of doing evil in order to stop evil yet he can never bring himself to do it and even if he fails to stop the big bad of Monster, Tenma would still have done a ton of good as throughout the story, Tenma helps a lot of people either fixing their own personal problems or their physical ones. And this is why Tenma makes tops the list as the greatest anime character ever: everyone has his limits, just Tenma shows that you can cross these limits and be a great person at the same time.

Honestly, no joke here. After the characters and their relationships, he was one of the best parts of the show. His interaction with the characters was absolutely, utterly hilarious and it was obvious the seiyuu enjoyed himself. His voice just sounds SO sarcastic and condescending but in a funny sort of way. Combhat Bahttille Storee!

AS for the ending theme, I like it. I like the visuals in it fanservice aside. Speaking of Ruka, I want to know how her relationship with Hayate is going to develop.

If I had to find any faults with the anime and manga, it would be that season 1 had a lot of great episodes which were retconned out in season 2 which is a bummer because episode46 in the first anime was very, very sweet. However, season 2 more than made up for it by delivering one of the most heartwarming and sweet moment in anything ever when Hayate actually holds Hinagiku on the balcony in order to show her the view. It has everything that makes Hayate so great. There is no pathethic crying melodramatically, no moment killers (thank goodness!), it’s all show no tell and coupled with to great characters, it was just a great scene all around. Season 2 also had a lot more extremely funny jokes. While I missed all the references and shout outs from season 1 (all the Eva references made my jaws hurt with glee), the scenes where Wataru does a comedy routine and when Hayate goes to rescue Nagi from a spaceship only to find out who was actually driving it were PRICELESS.

Say chapman, since we’re the two biggest Hayate fanboys here, what do you think of Ruka and Hayate himself? Personally, I always liked Ruka. She’s charming like the other girls and also very nice. As for Hayate, he’s a genuinely nice guy. Yes, he’s intentionally so perfect, a parody sue but unlike other Mary sues, Hayate actually has problems and is socially awkward but at the same time, the girls love him instead of berate him and we actually believe that anyone would love this guy. He’s also BADASS.

In conclusion, to compare Hayate to other harem comedies would be an insult to Hayate because it so so different, so much more well written, so much less filthy (fanservice aside) and so much more genuinely heartwarming unlike most harem comedies (well, except Clannad and Haruhi Suzumiya those are very good).

And I went on another Hayate rant. Sorry but am I boring?

Seriously, this is an example of how bad animation can drag down great material.

I’m not familiar with Ruka beyond the anime, since I’ve only read what’s licensed here in the US of the manga. Going to be starting vol 20 soon.

The ED isn’t bad, but it’s out of place in a show like this.

And I’d hardly call the fanservice in Hayate “filthy”. It’s objectionable, but certainly much less in quantity than in other shows.

As for the 1st season of Hayate, the show essentially threw out any continuity with the manga (and it was 100% faithful in the first place) after about episode 26, so the latter half of the show was a logical choice to be “forgotten” when the second season came around.

I never called the fanservice in Hayate filthy. It’s standar but more tasteful and ‘normal’ most of the time. The only bit I found to be distasteful was when Wataru and Saki were gambling against a villian who forced Sakuya to dress in a bunny costume (yeah, it makes sense in context) which would tear up everytime they lost a round or so. However, despite being a bit fanservicy, I wan’t exactly disgusted; hell, I was cheering for Saki and Wataru in order to save Sakuya. That aside, Hayate is pretty tame.

I disagree with the animation. While not great, it’s still ncie to look at except Hayate who even in the manga looks too girly.

What’s your favorite season and moment in Hayate chapman? Personally, I love season 2 more even though I LOVE the first season but season 2 not only had a more consistent plot, it had some of the sweetest, most heartwarming moments I have ever seen in anything, not to mention the fact it killed me laughing (Wataru’s comedy act=priceless!). Not that the first season was bad, far from it. I’d give the first season a 8 but the second season plus everything else, an 8.5.
