Who should make the first move?

Aww. What a nice story. Well, I once had a girl go 30 kilometres with me through sand and wind and somehow… I’m where I am.
Perhaps you only needed a clearer signal than this, to understand that she was interested? 🤷 I once also had a nice girl accompany me, and we got all wet on a mountaintop in the cold rain, and after that we had to drink hot tea mixed with copious amounts of cognac to warm ourselves up, and I still didn’t get it… 😦
Or a moment of affection. Holding hands is more of an affection thing. It’s normal for female friends, it’s just we guys don’t do it.
Yes, affection. I believe that was the case.
I’d say a signal in response. Honestly, as long as the woman is not married, not a religious, not with a guy, a gentle hint on a man’s part is not a crime. A sense of humour is important. It makes things less tense.
Actually, you are correct. It’s more like a back-and-forth and most of the time, the man should be manly enough to initiate. What kind of Knight is he, whom, girt with a sword, is afraid to go to battle? :knight1: 😃

The Prince knocks on the door, but waits until the Princess invites him in. Unless of course the Princess has been kidnapped and is in a deep sleep (think Shrek part 1 :D) and can only hope that the Prince will act decisively on his own. I mean we gentlemen should be convinced that we acted and the ladies only responded to us.

We are like the scientist who was convinced that he trained the mouse to climb up the ladder in order to get a piece of cheese as a reward. However, the mouse had a different perspective: l trained this scientist so well that whenever I feel like eating, I just climb up the ladder and he immediately gives me a piece of cheese, explained the mouse. 😛

I knew her for a total of two days. She was beautiful. She was exactly my type. She was kind and nice. She was smart and had the sportsman’s will to go forward. The trip was her idea or her friend’s. I helped her and her friend with something on the beach, we talked, someone came up with that walk, we agreed and set up a meeting. In the evening, I had the bad luck of coming across some competition and it looked strange. I was in the process of provoking a fight a with two sailors when it cleared out. In the end we went to some club with them (not my idea, as you can guess, but I’d get shot before letting things take their own course). The evening come, I was in the picture, the sailors were not. We met up in the morning, made that long march, it was about 15 km one way. In the middle of it, we jogged up a sand dune straight from the march. She was a sporty girl, after four years of a sporty highschool plus some competitions, I was a guy with asthma and warriors’ blood in my veins. I pulled it off, don’t know how, even helped her along the way (as I was putting my best actorship in keeping my voice steady and not panting). On the way back, wind started, rain followed, temperature dropped. Had to throw my arm around her to keep her warm and going. Her friend was joking it was romantic, I had a very similar opinion but didn’t say anything. As we arrived at the end of sandy beach, the weather improved. She thanked me, they went off to prepare for leaving by train soon, were too tired to think of any plans for the evening, presumably left in the morning.

I didn’t take her number or made any moves because there was a girl in my home city that I was seeing. In the end that girl admitted it was more friends but less than a couple, although she claimed she was sort of treating me as another girl, which from the perspective of several years of more experience, was a bit of an exaggeration. I acted on a notion of integrity and fidelity to implied commitment.

Things like that happen between friends of opposing genders if they stick around for long enough.
Yes, affection. I believe that was the case.
Affection is so seriously underrated.

Erm. People change. Some years ago, I’d have shouted, “Face me, oh malefic ogre, thy vileness cometh to an end today!” Several years ago, I’d stick with a shorter, “Eat my justice!” And these days, I’d probably spit on the ground and made big eyes at the ogre. 😛

Ah the mechanics of male-female communication! 😛 Part of the reason I’m single is probably that I’m too good with that thing. I generally see through it all and seem to think I’ve seen it all. In fantasy books, some rulers have truthsayers, who stand in the back and declare if the speaker is speaking the truth or lying. I can pull off a similar thing. I’ve told people what they think or feel. I generally know what the deal is before a person realises it himself and few things escape my notice. I once spotted an inconsistency with a sentence uttered half a year before. I was once caught using an interrogation tactic subconsciously by a law doctor doubling as a therapist (same question asked more than once, rephrased, at different times in a conversation), when we were talking about some random stuff after a peculiar law class. I’m only deceived when I allow myself to be, which is when it would be either unethical or cruel (unhuman) to doubt someone. Or when I’m in love. The latter obstacle doesn’t last forever because I always figure things out. At the same time, my friends have pointed out there’s no telling what goes on in my own head. So here I am, single. Though I prefer the appellation of old bachelor because I denounce the singles culture.

Don’t laugh, Whatevergirl, you’re all set and married, easy to laugh now, yeah? 😃 Wait, how old is your son, 16? Teach him to be a Cool Captain! 😉 Have you got a Princess, too? 🙂
lol, yes I have a son and a 12 yr old daughter…I like that, teach him to be a cool captain. 😉 I think that you are right in saying that women can do perhaps a better job (my words) of hinting to a man of interest, that she is interested, instead of playing games (my words again) I don’t liken that to a woman making the first move though. I just think that might make it easier for the man to make that first move.😃

I wonder how many men think they made the first move, the way you put it, Whatevergirl. 😛

heres a question. I am friends with someone who i am 99% sure likes me and i like him. I think we would be a good match but it seems like he will never ask me out. Should i ask him out? We are both pretty traditional and i would prefer if he asked me but it seems like he never will.
I’ve been there and finally did make the first move. I’m really glad I did because we’ve been together for 3 years now. We’ve talked about it since, and it probably would have taken him a couple more months to get up the nerve. He’d never had a girlfriend before.

By the time I made the first move (I actually just kissed him as it seemed easier than saying something) I was 100% sure he liked me too. My other friend had all but told me, and we were really completely obvious to each other.

I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with the girl taking the initiative once in awhile. My boyfriend sure didn’t mind!

Good luck.

Technically my husband asked me out first…but I was grounded so I had to decline (I was only 17). It ended up a couple weeks later I had to try to get hold of him to even find out his name. I then asked him out! We have been married now 20 years and have four kids. 😃

I would like to contribute to the re-opening of old threads by bringing this one back up…any progress on initiating interest to this gentleman?

Tons of. But I’d rather give you something positive about. Of those I have a couple too. I can tell you that sometimes people can be very surprising and a lot of goodness, which can sometimes shame us, can come from surprising directions. Sometimes you really don’t know where things start and where they go. Sometimes it takes mere hours for something to unfold.

As for head games, tell me more. I have both practical and theoretical preparation because as a teenager I read books about games people played. In fact, those were rather serious books and I read about characterology and generally human nature and communication as I went.
Come on Chev! Throw a dog a bone here, man! If I was your daughter, what would you advise her?

Not to many head games, I do find it amusing when men wil give you a directive ad see your reaction as to how bothered or comfortable you are with it.

Lately, if I go on a date, a guy will tell me to cover the tip and it is almost always just asking for a 20, but they make sure to watch my reaction, as I always give a poker face. This happened to me three time in the last two years. Is it just coincidence, or could that be something?

As a male, one thing I’ve learned in these times is that every woman is different, and as much as we’ve heard that it is OK for women to make the first move, there are a lot of women who do expect the male to perform the traditional role. In fact, one lady I was talking to at the National Catholic Singles Conference said she actually wants the man to make the decision on where to go and what to do on the date (since it shows decisiveness).
I was in the process of provoking a fight a with two sailors when it cleared out.
I’m sorry, but I’m trying to picture you starting a fight with two sailors! http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/style_emoticons/default/boxer.gif :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Don’t play head games? Don’t get involved with people who do? Understand that social games and elaborate hints and suggestions and all that game - yes, indeed, it’s a game - is on a whole different level from the stupid games that are typically played by people with people’s heads? Don’t fall for the easy. Don’t settle with too little. Don’t ever be calculating, but have a head on your shoulders. Don’t discount the value of feelings, but understand that they are emotions. Whatever you do, be honourable, because it is as important for a woman as it is for a man? Probably something along these lines. But if you were my daughter, I’d have to be half again as old as I now am, at least. 😉

Often done by both genders. I often say or do things to see people’s reactions. Sometimes a religious reference, sometimes a social one. Political maybe. I try to respect people’s dignity by not turning them into unwitting lab bunnies, but I will often play the field that way. I’m generally rather probing. It’s not just in dating scenarios.

Probably the truth is somewhere in the middle. Somewhat coincidental, but not entirely. Probably checking your reaction in some way. Don’t know what it means, I’d have to take guesses at it. Men sometimes want to see a woman’s reaction in those “who pays” scenarios. Some men believe it’s selfish not to contribute and some others may believe it’s selfish not to contribute when asked to.

That’s actually not so true and not so easy. A woman may gracefully accept the kindness without making a drama of it. That is comparable to appreciating the little things people do for us day by day even if we don’t come forth with it too much. Or she may go by the traditional custom without much fuss. That’s also a viable approach that doesn’t say anything wrong about her. There are also people who try to pay for the next one instead of going Dutch or everyone paying his part. You never really know. And absent an ill sense of entitlement, which is in reality that thing which men fear, there should be no problem whatsoever - except men are not always very thoughtful or insightful in this kind of trials.

The sense of entitlement I’m talking about is not a healthy sense of knowing your rights that come from customs and traditions but thinking you’re oh so great and the other person is not really. You know this when you see a woman treats you like her social inferior. That is a prime red flag, although some guys actually like it. They are like those troubled girls who flock like lemmings to abusive relationships and stay with men who mistreat them.

I don’t know why the tip, though. It may be a local factor. Don’t you have a custom that the woman (or the guest) pays the tip if the man (or the “host”) pays for the dinner? Maybe there’s a piece of etiquette that I’m not aware of. I live overseas and customs are a bit different here.

Actually, women also check men’s reactions when it comes to paying. There are women who will offer to pay for themselves and split it and you won’t get a second date if you accept. Regardless if you did it to respect her freedom and despite your inclination to pay! My rule is to act naturally regardless of what tests a lady might be running on me. She has a right to her conclusions and I have a right to my life. I will always allow her to pay for herself if she’s adamant about it because I’m a big fan of allowing people to make their own decisions and appreciating their contributions. If she wants to invite me in return, after I invited her, I will go also. I believe this is common courtesy. Haggling is not common courtesy. The courtesy of paying for the meal or other things is always about the lady, not about making the guy feel good, and any idea of creating an obligation should be avoided. Besides, not having your way is a measure of humility. This said, I sometimes have my way, but that’s when I know the situation is safe and there won’t be any bad results. 😉 By the way, avoid men who aim to make you feel obliged as much as you avoid men who are discourteous.

Lol. I’ve saved big stuff by being decisive when on job and I really don’t need to prove things just to humour someone - although I might do just for just that purpose. If I feel like it, I will name a random place and time just to be decisive. On the other hand, people should be appreciative if you -gasp- ask their opinion. I don’t fancy being a tyrant, a bully or a testosterone pack. Ironically, by this I prove I have attitude. Ironically again, this will not normally be noticed. Or at least not early. 😛 If someone would cross me out for it, I don’t want to be involved. Those tiny tests are counterproductive because there’s not enough data to make any informed judgement.

I was being a jerk verbally. They’d have had to throw the first punch. And it’d have been pure distraction effort on my part.

As the Grand Master of the Most Brooding and Grumpy Order of Old Bachelors, I feel the duty incumbent on me to offer a sound volume of succinct clarification.
This is funny, as you are only 25. :rotfl:

You are very mature in most of your posts, that I truly question this being true.

In any case, thanks for the advo!

I guess the bottom line for me is that if I don’t meet a woman who will make the first move, I’ll be single my whole life. Due to my Asperger’s, unless I’m in a situation where conversation centers around one of my main interests, my brain and my mouth don’t synch up and I simply don’t know what to say. I’m not shy, but at the same time, I’m intelligent enough to know that it’s probably a bad idea to walk up to some random female and ask her what she thinks of the ending of Battlestar Galactica.

Sigh. Not much hope of finding one that read the same stuff I did, either, let alone films or games. On the other hand, I’m viable as I am.

I have a question in particular for all you married people but anyone is welcome to give their personal experience.
I feel that generally relationships work better if the man makes the first move and is generally the one doing the ‘chasing’. Has this been your experience?

For the married people - who made the first move, in your situation? Did you play the traditional gender roles?

Are there any particular pitfalls relating to this that I should avoid, as a woman, when dating? I must admit I tend to agonise over whether someone likes me and this can lead me into possibly making ‘wrong moves’ (I know this may be a silly way to think)!

What are your views on this type of thing?
Blue Skies,

I highly recommend the book “Christian Courtship in an Over Sexed World” by Fr. TG Morrow - catholicfreeshipping.com/Products/cfs_chcoinovsewo.html

It gives great advise from a Catholic perspective. My wife and I read it when we were courting and really enjoyed it. The book also helps men and women understand their role within a romantic relationship i.e. who takes the lead, how a woman can let the man lead but still give him ‘hints’, etc.

Hope this helps!

It depends mainly with the individuals intentions and the end result of that relationship. If a man has set out a time frame for himself to find a woman and get married, he will always make the first move.If a woman is looking out for security and financial support as witness in many poor parts of the world the woman will always make a first move. Most happly married couples started as mare friends with no strings attached. As years go by true friendship begins to grow leading to marriage.

Hahaha, this tread is great. Two stories, I don’t know if you would call this the first move or just letting him know you are interested, but my mother was miffed that my dad didn’t turn around and offer her peace during mass, so she “bumped” into him when leaving church. He ended up following her home (i.e. they lived in the same apartment complex). After that I am not sure who asked who out. But it was a pretty amusing story for us 6 kids after 30+ years of marriage.

This is kind of what happened with my husband, We were on a mission trip together.I being a young naive 17 year old girl did not even realize I was giving signals, much less that a boy was interested in me (I was a Tom-boy all the way). On the drive back he asked me to go to a baseball game, which I refused, thinking it would be way to difficult and I didn’t want to pay for it, etc. So then he aske dif he could come over to my house and show me the pictures from the trip, to which i agree. (minimal work on my part, but a new friend in the process). Long story short, I was the first girl he had the courage to ask out, he “thought” I felt the same as he did. (Which is impossible as I was totally oblivious.) So he continued to pursue the relationship, which I attribute only to the grace of God. Almost 6 years later, happily married with a baby on the way, we couldn’t be happier.

I wouldn’t give up hope just yet. My husband has me watching Star Trek Voyager with him, sorting baseball cards, and being really interested in many of his random video and card games. 😃
