Howdy! I hope you are having a wonderful day.
I’m starting a club as of now. All that members need to do is not watch TV. No TV in your home. If you’re at a restaurant that has a TV, concentrate on food and on the people you’re with. If you’re visiting friends who own a TV, ask if they would mind turning it off and start a great conversation. You could talk about the weather, our new Holy Father, how things are going, and a whole lot more. I hope that people join. God bless you!

my Mother my Confidence,
Corinne

I’d like to join. It’s amazing how much time is wasted when you just watch TV shows. I’ll be honest, I won’t cut myself off completely. But I’ll make a deal, when I do watch TV, I’ll start watching EWTN more instead of channel surfing.
TV’s at a restaurant isn’t a problem, talking with your family and friends gets my attention in those situations.
Instead of TV I’ll do some extra chores, make rosaries, or dedicate it to some form of prayer time to God.
Thanks. I’ll do my best at this goal.

crusader4life, welcome to the club! You’ve got a great start.

I like your idea.

I have tv in my house but rarely watch it. When I have company, they get my complete undivided attention. Not even videos or dvds go in.

I’m glad to hear that. Welcome to the club!

If rented movies are allowed, but no cable or tv, then my family have been charter members for 15 years. All we’ve watched (with an antenna and lots of snow) in our house has been the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the weather news during the hurricanes, and John Paul’s funeral Mass.

Rented movies are allowed. DH and I watch DVDs sometimes on his computer. Kudos to you!

My wife and I decided to stop watching TV when we got married and I believe it has changed our lives. We talk every night and I read more in a year than I read in my whole life before we were married. I also believe that it has contributed greatly to giving our four boys the ability to entertain themselves and they all read every day as well. We homeschool them and I know we would struggle nightly if the TV was on.

I can’t take credit for this, though, because I grew up in a house with the TV on constantly. It was my DW’s idea and it took some adjustment for me initially. But, it’s probably the best thing we have done for our marriage.

Been TV-free for all 20 years of marriage! It can be done. And the kids read and get smart! And we talk a lot and have quiet family dinners every night. And we save tons of money on not buying TVs or paying for cable service. What a concept! :dancing:

LaChiara and JimO, you just made my night!! Congratulations on being TV-free. 😃

New members are always welcome.
What do you do instead of watching TV? Pray, volunteer, read a great book, email, post on Catholic Answers Forums, go to Perpetual Adoration, pursue a hobby?

I like to post on CAF (obviously), read, pray, and think about what to do next…should I go clean, take a nap, eat (I’m pregnant), do this or that…and read great Christian websites like these:
spiritdaily.com
lifesitenews.com
dashjr.is-a-geek.org/~cora-jr/ (my website; this has links to more Christian and prolife websites)
dashjr.is-a-geek.org/truth (my family’s Christian forum)

Give up the Pittsburgh Steelers?
EWTN?
NFL Network?

Nahhhh.

I don’t watch a lot of TV but there’s times when I want it.

God bless you who have the discipline to get rid of it.

Sorry, I’ll take a pass on this club. There’s still some some good sitcoms on tv, and other stuff on the tube. :tiphat:

Dear friend

As much as I can’t stand most of the tripe that the powers that be in TV-land think we should watch. There are also some great programmes on TV, like the documetary I watched about squid tonight, which was truly brilliant (I like my nature programmes, they swim down to almost 2 miles under sea and were thought to be aggressive man-eaters, but seems this behaviour was brought about by the violent way they are fished and are actually very intelligent, kind and placid…anyway sorry if that’s boring you, but I love God’s creation and like to learn about it).

I have seen so many places in the world without ever visiting them and that’s a good thing because I can’t afford to visit them, so I know what a beautiful sunset over the ocean in India looks like or the snow-capped Andes.

Some of the cookery stuff on TV has fired up my kitchen imagination more than once and inspired me to be more creative with my culenary delights.🙂 . I watched LiveAid on Tv, I watched Pope John Paul II being elected and saw the smoke on a black and white TV…!!..I watched the Pope’s funeral and the new Pope’s election. I watched a woman with cancer run hundreds of miles for charity (she has to be a saint). I watched Bob Geldof meet Mother Teresa. I watched the news of the Tsunami, I watched the Berlin wall come down, I watched Russia destroy communism, I watched the beginning of wars and the ending of them.

There are some great films on Tv, some great programmes that people should watch, but I would be over-joyed if they took the violent, drug infested, sex-filled, materialistic, shallow and hate-filled biased tripe off the TV.

So I have it switched off more than it is switched on, but to get rid of it altogether would for me be a poor move.

Good luck to all of you who do get rid of the tube.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

Oh man. I wish I could----but I can’t miss “24”. I also enjoy the History channel and EWTN. I admire all of your discipline!!! Good Luck.

God Bless

I love tv also, but it is inappropiate to use such language. If the poster doesn’t want to watch tv that is her right. She doesn’t deserve to be cussed at over it.

A good reason that DH and I don’t have TV is that we have no income. (please pray that one or both of us gets a job really soon) TV really isn’t necessary. We enjoy being free of liberal mainstream media bias on the news on TV, and we enjoy the lack of commercials. We play music whenever we want. Luke (my DH) is good enough with computers that we sometimes watch EWTN over the Internet; he actually did that the day Pope John Paul II died so we could hear the bell. (that was a very sad day). I don’t think that sex, vulgarity and innuendo will ever be off the TV, so why not just get rid of it? We are free to learn about God’s creation from books and websites. There are plenty of news websites out there and I enjoy reading conservative commentary on townhall.com

Anyway…God bless you!

Also, with cooking on TV…I don’t miss that. Family members and friends teach me how to cook and there’s a great recipe website: allrecipes.com
