First of all, I don’t have bankrupt views on life. And yes, I would base my decision on slavery from a purely logical standpoint. It is illogical, and because it is illogical, it is also immoral. It is because of it’s illogicality and it’s consequent immorality that it does not work. Simple logic tells us that when one group of people oppress another group of people, eventually the latter will rise up against the former. After all, “blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth” (Matthew 5:5).

When people criticize slavery from a moral viewpoint, they are really criticizing it from a logical one. We live in a world where Humans desire free will. It’s because of this that slavery is ultimately wrong. This would also explain why robots can never endure “slavery”, since they desire no freedom.

Thank you,
Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk
IMO, and with respect, I believe your views are bankrupt regarding life. I say that because you come at from such a bankrupt pov. Slavery and abortion should be fought FROM the moral pov, and in that case the clear immorality of those practices dictates the logic, not the other way around as you seem to think. In other words, you should stand against abortion from a moral pov simply because it is the right thing to do, and the economy and other issues cannot trump the protection of human life. I suppose the only case that would trump the evil of abortion is nuclear war.

It seems YOU do not agree that slavery is a morally reprehensible practice so long as the economy does well–and only if the economy suffers is banning slavery a good act under your posted pov.
I was pointing out a sad fact of the world. I am a libertarian, the idea of slavery insults me to the very core of my being. I was pointing out that business and politicians have too much to loose to allow slavery, in whatever form, to ever go away. They will simply mutate it to disguise it. It is symptomatic of our broken political system. YOu should be careful about reading into the intentions of other people. I posted nothing that demonstrated any love of the institution.

When did I ever say abortion was right? I am against abortion. You can’t be Catholic and pro-abortion…

Abortion is wrong because it is an infringement upon the life and liberty of another person. You’ve just confirmed what I was going to say all along 😃

Thank you,
Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk
If you believe this, then there was no need for your counter posts. One cannot be pro-abortion and be Catholic, which by extension means one cannot knowingly advance the cause of legal abortion and still remain a good Catholic.

Of course I’m anti-abortion. What makes you think I wasn’t lol!?

Go back and read your messages. You fight against any thought of making abortion a focused priority…

How can one be against abortion, understand its true nature, and yet NOT make it a real priority to work to ban its legal practice?

So you agree that as Catholics we can not support one who supports abortion? CAF is rife with Catholicswho claim to oppose abortion but never, never let that oppostion effect their vote.

It appears that at least on CAF people prefer anyone BUT Obama by over a 2 to 1 margin

How can a Catholic possibly vote for Obama? How could anyone with any sense vote for Obama? Wow, there are some VERY confused folks on this poll. And Israel should NEVER be forced to move borders back to 1967. That would entail handing over the Church of the Nativity (Christ’s birthplace), the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Christ’s death and resurrection), a huge portion of the Wailing Wall and other very holy, historic spots.

**THAT SHOULD NEVER OCCUR. AS IN EVER. **

Because the country is in such a mess after Obama has had three years in office, let alone another four. What kind of mess would the country be in then? Republicans do not want to wait and find out.
You have to cut him a bit of slack. He inherited the mess from George W. Bush, so it’s not like Obama started it

Yes, which is precisely why abortion is still legal.

Catholics have it within their reach to end legal abortion–they just won’t do it because they hold things (other than life itself) more sacred. Many Catholics in the “I am not a single issue voter” camp are also in the social justice camp; however, how can a person receive social justice if our culture is busy killing that person?
Right-wing politicians won’t touch abortion. You know why? It’s because that’s the way they’ll continue to get one-issue voters to keep voting for them

Anyway, with social justice, it looks like we have to take it one step at a time. Regardless, every politician we vote for will have some ideology that does not fit well with social justice

Since I can’t choose more than one, I chose Herman Cain. If I could choose more than one, I would have also chosen Rick Santourum or maybe Tim Pawelnty or Newt Gingrich. But NEVER Obama! I can’t vote for anyone who thinks abortion is a legitimate medical procedure, supports giving $ to the UNFPA and Planned Parenthood and wants our tax money to support abortion overseas. Oh, and his wife calls PARTIAL BIRTH abortion a legitimate medical procedure when its clearly INFANTICIDE!

Life Issues are important to me since whoever is making appointments to certain departments such as Health and Human services department, will affect ME in the future.

God guides my choices, and I know that abortion makes him weep.

You do know that forum members tend to be biased towards the right, so it’s more impressive that the President got as many votes as he did here.

I’m rooting for Romney. Ron Paul would be dead last choice for me. I’d have to immediately go home and shower, maybe with peroxide if it came down to it.

Bush inherited it from Clinton, who inherited it from Bush, who inherited it from Reagan, who inherited it from Carter, who inherited it from Ford, who inherited it from Nixon, who inherited it from Johnson, who inherited it from Kennedy, who inherited it from Eisenhower, who inherited it from Truman, who inherited it from Roosevelt…which is where most of it started. What’s your point?

There are many different ways to view social justice and many different ways to go about trying to attain those goals. Yet, with abortion matters are far more clear…if we vote for Democrats, we are voting for abortion even if we do not intend to do so. If we desire the end of legal abortion, we cannot attain that with the Democratic Party.

I agree. Since abortion isn considered an absolute intrinsic evil by the Church, and since the Church condemns abortion in all its various forms, and since the Church says Catholics cannot support abortion in any way, it is shocking that so many people who claim to be Catholics support abortion with their votes.

But what about proportionate reasoning…and all that? What sense does it make to have all of these babies if we are going to not give them a living wage, free health care, food stamps, government retirement, subsidized housing, child care assistance and free college tuition?
