I would say… myself.

I AM a Catholic, but I’m a poor follower of Christ and His Church.

Before we start wishing others were “good Catholics like us” maybe we ought to work on our own relationship with Jesus and His body, the Church. :twocents:
I second that. Especially with the comment i saw above yours.

I would like for many Mormon people I have known over the years to become Catholic. There are so many good people involved in Mormonism. They have excellent morals and faith and they build strong families. But their religion is demonstrably, objectively false. It’s a tragedy.

Then I am pretty sure I would like to become Catholic, too. 😃

Well, if you think about it, the death penalty takes the role of God into people’s hands.
actually, that is what murder is. the death penalty is taking the role of God and allowing a God ordained (see Romans chapter 13) authority to hand out the punishment. it is not an individual seeking revenge, it is the government handing out justice.
So, yes, it’s always wrong…
so no, you can’t say that it is always wrong. you can say (like i do) that you disagree with it, or that it actually isn’t necessary at all in today’s world, but you can’t say it’s wrong. (well, you can but you wouldn’t have a leg to stand on).
and it’s not like God destroys whole races of people everyday… the Pentateuch isn’t to be taken too literally, remember?
who says we can’t take it literally? the church has never said that at all. they have said we don’t have to take it literally, but have never said not to. plus, archaeology is actually on the side of those who believe the hebrews destroyed other nations.

May this post be a prayer, amen.

My Aunt Carol. She was a devout Catholic for most of her life, until she was in her 40’s and “read the Bible for the first time”…Now she subscribes to a vague pentacostal/prosperity gospel-type theology. (Kenneth Hagin, Benny Hinn, etc…)

Also, my good friend Stephanie.

I’m suprised I’m the only one who voted for Christopher Hitchens. He has “potential convert” written all over him. And wouldn’t it be such a fascinating and inspiring conversion story…? I’d buy that book! :yup:

Personally all the lapsed Catholics especially those who approach our church for sacraments only as an action rather than an exercise of faith meant to draw them closer to God. This includes couples who come to the church for marriage, those who come to the church to have their children baptized but do not take the vow to raise them Catholic part of the sacrament they receive. Lots of reasons to pray.

God instituted the death penalty, not really sure how it could be an afront to Him.

Genesis 9:6

“If anyone sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; For in the image of God has man been made.”
Well…
2 At daybreak [Jesus] appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in the middle 4 they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, 5 and in the Law Moses has ordered us to stone women of this kind. What have you got to say?’ 6 They asked him this as a test, looking for an accusation to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger.
7 As they persisted with their question, he straightened up and said, ‘Let the one among you who is guiltless be the first to throw a stone at her.’ 8 Then he bent down and continued writing on the ground.
9 When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until the last one had gone and Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained in the middle. 10 Jesus again straightened up and said, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ 11 ‘No one, sir,’ she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus. ‘Go away, and from this moment sin no more.’

And
The Catechism of the Catholic Church invokes “principles which do not exclude absolutely capital punishment but give very severe ‘criteria’ for its moral use. It seems to me it would be very difficult to meet the conditions today.” - Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) at a Sept. 9, 1997, Vatican press conference introducing the new edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
And
“We cannot overcome crime by simply executing criminals, nor can we restore the lives of the innocent by ending the lives of those convicted of their murders. The death penalty offers the tragic illusion than we can defend life by taking life.” -
Administrative Committee, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, A Good Friday Appeal to End the Death Penalty (Washington, DC: USCCB, 1999)
Hmmmm.

And when the thief on the cross asked Jesus for foregiveness and said he deserved to be on that cross but Jesus didn’t, Jesus didn’t stop him and say “no you don’t no man should be put to death”…

HMMM

Jesus came to fulfill the law not erase it. While Jesus showed compassion for sinner and removed the death penalty for adultery He never said a thing about erasing it completely.

Hard to argue with the Pope, Lukewarm. Particularly if you’re Catholic. 😃

The Pope has clearly left room open for believing in the death penalty, you can believe in the death penalty and be a good Catholic. So you’re right hard to argue with the Pope. If the Pope really wasa against the death penalty 100% he would outlaw it ex-cathedra and make it one of the non-negotiables. He hasn’t…

Frankly I want to fry every child rapist and killer out there. I have no issue with it at all, it saves the innocent and is in line with God’s justice.

The Pope clearly left room? You didn’t read what he said very clearly. If you can put someone away for life, it is very hard to defend the death penalty. Also - vengeance is the Lord’s, not ours.

Sounds like cafeteria Catholicism to me, Lukewarm. But that’s just me.

O+

Puting someone away for life is nearly impossible almost all of them get out again. The death penalty saves lives. Ted Bundy is a classic example had he been put to death earlier many lives would’ve been saved, he escaped and raped and murder indescriminantly.

You need to show me where I can’t accept the death penalty as a form of punishment before judging me on this one, you haven’t. Most Catholics are pro-death penalty.

On the Death Penalty, this is what our Catechism has to say:

2267 *Assuming that the guilty party’s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.

If, however, nonlethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people’s safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and are more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.

Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not practically nonexistent.*NT

Most Catholics are pro-death penalty.
If you are correct, then, per the Catechism, our legitimate authorities are in violation of the Catechism. Now, Lukewarm, are you pro-Catholic catechism, or pro-U.S. Government?

Cafeteria Catholicism… which most of the U.S. is in tough topics: death penalty, birth control, Real Presence.

Jim Schettler, former pastor of the Campus church at Pensacola Christian College. What a gifted preacher.

Alistair Begg, pastor of Parkside Church in Cleveland OH, heard on Moody Radio just about every evening.

More locally, my family and my dd’s boyfriend.
I love Alistair Begg also. He’s conversion would be way cool! 👍

And locally for me it would be my in-laws and my sisters (who would technically be reverts).

You are simply wrong the Catechism and Pope are ambiguous, you simply can be pro-death penalty and in god standing with the Church. You can’t be against the real presence and pro-abortion and be a good Catholic. You’re inventing stuff really.

I’m pro-death penalty I have no problem with it at all, and that isn’t “cafeteria catholicism”…

No disrespect but this thread is not about the death penalty. You guys should continue this discussion under the Social Justice heading.

Peace!

With regards to non-Catholics I’d like to see become Catholic I would love to see my best friends, my nephew who was baptized Catholic but goes to a 4 Square church, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Bishop Gene Robinson (his conversion would include joining Courage), and all the televangelists. And amen to Jack Chick’s conversion! 👍 That would be so wild!
