Why are Catholics told to be tolerant?

I don’t think he hates individual people who are SSA. I think he’s expressing that it’s the bad behavior he hates and that it seems he’s being asked to condone or tolerate it and that there is no tolerance for his belief that certain actions are sinful. He does have to be careful to not paint all SSA people with the same brush or judge them all because of the behavior of a few.

Which is fine but I didn’t see him condemning anyone so much as being frustrated with indecent behavior and thinking he’s being asked to tolerate it.

I just came away with a different POV than you have.

left wing priests? it would be a turn off for me. But some accuse Pope Francis of same.
I wonder if those we need to be more tolerant towards are tolerant towards us.

Righteous anger is not bad. Anger that aims to harm other is bad. The Vatican has stated that we must oppose laws that are not moral. For example, those that allow homosexual unions and abortion.

Note what the Catechism states:
1866 Vices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to the capital sins which Christian experience has distinguished, following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They are called “capital” because they engender other sins, other vices.138 They are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia.

1867 The catechetical tradition also recalls that there are “sins that cry to heaven”: the blood of Abel,139 the sin of the Sodomites,140 the cry of the people oppressed in Egypt,141 the cry of the foreigner, the widow, and the orphan,142 injustice to the wage earner.143

1868 Sin is a personal act. Moreover, we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them:
  • by participating directly and voluntarily in them;
  • by ordering, advising, praising, or approving them;
  • by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;
  • by protecting evil-doers.

He sounds intolerant because he’s intolerant of sin. Lesbianism, gayism all these things are perversions of God’s intent and plan. Why do you feel Catholics have to tolerate sin?

I think that our sins are what we should be talking about in confession. What the priest said that we agree with of disagree with is and should not be part of what you talk about in confession.

God loves each of us infinitely, and calls each of us to daily conversion. At some point, we are to admonish all types of sinners (only one has a pride movement, I’ll admit), but in charity so as to encourage them to reflect and repent. Doing this without smugness or self-righteousness demonstrates great virtue, and great love.

I confessed what can be mortal sins which included viewing pornography and masturbation, and a venial sin, anger. Anger at my government for being intolerant of Catholics exercising their faith. Angry that our political leaders mention the 1,000 year-old crusades (which was self-defence) whenever there is an Islamic terrorist attack, as if the current state of Catholicism is no different. I adhere to the non-aggression principle, and I’m for freedom of speech, but let’s be honest here. There’s definitely a bias in our media where it’s okay to mock Christianity, but the moment anybody expresses concerns about Islam we are called racist or even jailed in some cases. I mentioned this to be specific about my sins because priests also provide counsel.

What counsel did your priest give you? I also don’t think it would do any harm to make an appointment with him to discuss your concerns further and to help you understand.

You’re right. It does stink when there are others who ask for tolerance and don’t return it. We live in a fallen world. We will always have this problem. Jesus said the Church would be persecuted. Regardless, that never excuses us from exercising it towards others. I’m not saying you said that but it is difficult. Yet, Christ asks it of us anyway.

I get that you’re angry, a lot of us are about many things.

I don’t know you personally but what was running through my mind when I read your posts was whether you’re using that time to rant about ‘the others’ in the guise of confessing subconsciously, or if you were really repentant about your sins of anger…if that makes sense. It seemed like the focus was on the hypocrisy of others, rather than your sin, hence I asked.

I used to do something like that. I would say that I was really angry and gossiped about someone because she wronged me in this way and that way and so on, as if I wanted the other person to know what a horrible person she was to me instead of focusing on why I’m in the wrong here.

The world is not now, nor has it ever been, Christian. Since Adam got us kicked out of the Garden, we have lived in an environment full of sin and evil.

You are responsible for how well you obey God. While you are responsible for helping your “brothers” in their time of need, you are not responsible for preventing them from sinning.

Btw, while it is admirable that you got some tea for your mother, that is not necessarily charity, that is obeying the commandment to honor her.

This! ☝️
Jesus told us to not be surprised when we are persecuted. The world is just not fair. We learn that as kids. It does stink…but ultimately there will never be true justice for everyone until we get to Heaven. The enemy hates the Church and all She stands for…so we have to just keep on doing what Jesus instructed us to do: pray for our enemies and bless those who persecute us.

This reminds me of the old hymn:

When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Jesus
We’ll sing and shout the victory!
