Why are people gay?

What about themselves.
Do you think that they are at risk of harming their eternal souls?

I have yet to find any passage in the bible which states that homosexual behavior is ok or that fornication is ok, in fact I find quite the opposite,
I find the bible stating that fornicators will not enter heaven.
Maybe you disagree with what the bible teaches quite clearly, but what if you are wrong, isn’t that putting them in harms way?
Their souls are in danger if they are in mortal sin, just as a heterosexual would be.

We have to go to the Church’s teaching on what constitutes mortal sin, i.e. it must be grave and must be committed with full knowledge and consent. Do homosexuals have full knowledge, when what they are told goes against what they see themselves as being? I can’t answer that, because I really don’t know.

The problem with looking solely to Scripture for the answer is that Scripture also says that homosexuals and adulterers, should be taken out of the city and stoned to death. We don’t want to go there do we?

In all, I just try to do my best, but as a sinner myself, who’s pretty good at failing against my own temptations, I’m in no place to judge anyone else.

In all, we must trust in the mercy of Jesus Christ. In fact, in St. Faustina’s diary she wrote that the Lord told her, the one thing that offends Him the most, is people do not trust in His mercy.

If you accept and trust in the mercy of Jesus Christ, you will show mercy to others. Not showing mercy and compassion for others, is greater than any sins against the flesh, in my opinion.

God Bless

…TOP POST!..

There are absolutely zero genetic links. People are NOT born gay. That’s an excuse they use and as posters in other threads have said soon thieves, murderers etc will say they are born that way to justify what they are!!
I respectfullly disagree. I watched a 60minutes show couple of years ago where they interviewed a doctor and she said there is some sort of brain machine where when connected to a human brain and asked certain questions they can determine if the person is a psychopath or a normal human being. so in a sense there are people who are born killers and rapists.

With the issue with homosexuality, I know alot of folks who grew up in the church, are die heart Christians but they are gay. For me it doesnt make sense to choose to be gay. why would somebody choose to be gay knowing full well that majority of people will hate or treat them differently?

The only logical explanation is that they were born gay.

From a moral standpoint, is there a concrete explanation for homosexuality?
**Although there isn’t any genetic link that has been found (the so-called ‘gay’ gene), there are plenty of psychiatric studies available. **

Not to fuel the fire of this debate, but I thought I should point out that, simply because something has a biological component does not necessarily mean that it is genetic or that people are “born that way”. Our environment impacts us. It is, at the very least, possible that, even if a phenomena is observable in brain activity, it is the result of environmental factors that shaped the brain rather than a mere genetic disposition.

The problem with this theory is that gay people are born and raised in environments the same as their siblings who are not gay.

I wasn’t putting forth a theory, just pointing out a distinction I thought might be useful to think about for the debate. Your post raises another distinction, though (;)). I would say that, even two siblings raised in the same house are not necessarily products of identical environments. Parents can treat children differently. The children have different experiences of schools and friends. Not to mention the fact that even a few years difference can have a big impact on the culture of their community (which means child A may be reaching the age of reason in a significantly different cultural “moment” than child B).

To illustrate, my older brother and sister were raised in the same house, but they went to public schools, I went to Catholic schools. They had curfews when they were in high school. My parents trusted me enough (or perhaps grew soft :)) and didn’t give me a curfew at all when I was in high school. When they were in high school, our neighborhood was relatively safe. By the time I got to high school, it was such that you didn’t go outside at night.

The only circumstances where the environment might be identical is with twins. Even there, though, twins can be in different classes in school, they can have different groups of friends, or any number of things.

What any of this means for the present discussion, I’m not sure. I just put it out there as something to think about. Personally, I have no horse in this race. Whether it’s genetic or environmental (or a combination of both), homosexual acts are disordered and sinful, but we are to treat those with SSA with charity and respect, as we are to treat all people. Whatever the cause is doesn’t change any of that, at least not for me.

This will give you a different outlook on life and such, but your basic values, will be from your parents and pretty much the same. Either way, it won’t determine your sexual orientation.

Surely, that may very well be the case with many children, but I respectfully disagree that it can be said across the board. What if I told you that my older brother and sister have a different father, who was very distant and seldom came to see them? Would that change anything? That changes things quite a bit, I think. At least, I think it likely shaped their view of fatherhood to be much different than my own.

Parents do change. I knew a girl who was from a large family and the older siblings experienced anger and abuse from the mother until she had a conversion. The younger siblings know nothing of that. I think it’s a mistake to think that these things do not significantly shape a person’s outlook, personality, and, yes, even their values to be much different than their siblings. Parents also can die or divorce. Depending upon the age of the child, the impact can be much different on different children, even in the same household.

I guess the general point I’m making is that there are many factors, often unseen, which play into these things. I would be very hesitant to make sweeping statements that downplay the differences.

As far as what effect it has on sexual orientation, I don’t know. I’ve heard Dr. Nicolosi speak before, and his clinical experience clearly points to environmental factors. Is he right, is he wrong? I don’t know enough to say. In my mind, the most logical answer would be that there are both genetic factors and environmental triggers. But, again, I’m not an expert.

And, again, it really doesn’t matter to me. I would treat those with SSA in exactly the same way whether it was environmental or genetic (or both): with love and respect.

This is my personal opinion.

Homosexuality is a disorder; it is not normal and goes against the laws of nature. As such, I don’t believe that genetics play a role in human sexuality.

Homosexuality is a psychological disorder brought about by experiences in the formative years of childhood. I believe that homosexuals feel somewhat emasculated. During their adolescent years they looked up to other men as role models, and this may have brought about confused sexual feelings.

Many homosexuals lacked a strong male role model when growing up. They did not have a father figure to guide and teach them. I know homosexuals who were brought up in a feminine household with no male influences. I believe they are looking for the love and guidance they lacked during childhood; and consequently develop confused sexual desires for other men.

Another cause of homosexuality in some people is that they experienced rejection during childhood and adolescence, particularly by the opposite sex. A lot of teenagers who operate on the fringes of society feel rejected and lonely. They don’t have many friends and are often mistreated. In some instances, rejection by the oposite sex makes them feel unwanted and worthless. They subsequently avoid all interactions with the opposite sex. The only friends they have are male. They never experience acceptance by females and therefore develop sexual desires for the only people who show them affection - members of the same sex.

Some homosexuals felt rejected by other males during adolescence. Many homosexuals had no male friends when growing up. They only had girlfriends. Consequently, they started to look to males in a sexual manner. Maybe being surrounded by females causes them to lose all masculinity and develop a more female mindset. This could cause them to develop homosexual tendencies.

I believe that homosexuality could be treated by psychologists. They need help to resolve the issues that have caused the homosexual behaviour.
I’m sorry, but to say that men that are brought up without a father turn out to be homosexual is simply insulting and untrue.
My mother raised my brother and I by herself. Yes we actually had a father in the house, but he was not a man that my brother or I ever looked up to or cared for once. He was an alchohlic and we were both scared of him. We had a strong and loving figure to look up to in our mother. My brother is 100% straight and a very masculine man. I think we turned out better than most people who have both parents. We did fine without a father.
I think in most cases children need a good mother more than a good father. It’s not a disaster if a child grows up with just their mom.
As for the op, I think true homosexuality is something a person is born with. I don’t think we’ll ever be able to explain it. I’ve known many homosexuals that grew up in a normal, loving household, and say that they just always felt different, like a man/women trapped in someone elses body.
