Why can't Fr. Jenkins be fired?

For more context, here is the response to Obama’s speech by L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper. It serves to show just how out of touch with the rest of the world (including the Vatican!) many U.S. Catholics (including many U.S. bishops) are. No surprise: the Vatican has differed markedly with the U.S. episcopate over such issues as war, capital punishment, etc.
The article, I believe, is from the editor of the paper. That does not mean the Pope endorses it.

I can understand the “tradition” of inviting a sitting President to deliver the commencement speech. I fail to see the need or wisdom to confer an honorary degree on an individual who has such a pro-active agenda to promote abortion. The invitation to speak would be to the holder of the office of the presidency. The conferring of the degree is personal to the receiver. There is an important and symbolic distinction here, I believe.

:clapping:

thanks… getting very tired of peole using the word Catholic for those who are blatantly NOT Catholic!!!

The definition for Catholic should be someone who follows the teachings of the Church

not someone who warms a bench every Sunday… (and some dont’ even do that…)

it’s pretty sad when people use the word Catholic these days and no one is every really sure waht that means…!!!
Does you definition include all the Catholics that use artificial birth control? Or is it ok to use ABC as long as you “say” you are a pro-life Catholic?

Using ABC is living in defiance of the Church. Catholics do not live in defiance of the Church. Everyone sins, the difference is are you sinning because the flesh is weak, or are you sinning because you are saying that the Church has no right to tell you what to do. Most users of ABC fall into the latter category.

look here’s the reality the overwhelming majority of catholics in america don’t care or support obama speaking at ND. i know posting here a lot can warp your view about how the “catholic street” views things. this site is overwhelming orthodox catholic, but in the real world the laity is NOT orthodox, most are liberal or catholcis who pick and choose what they want to follow.

so why should the vatican, or anyone else raise a stink when the vat majority of your church supports ND and Obama?

Jenkins won’t be fired and he shouldn’t be. Like every recent NDU president before him, he invited the President to the commencement. Every recent president has been invited, and Jenkins did not break with that tradition. Notre Dame is a private university and Jenkins reports to his Board, which apparently agrees with his decision. Although this is not adequately represented on CA forums, most Catholics do not agree with you that Jenkins should be fired and Notre Dame punished. Jenkins is not a clown – he is a leader, and he won’t give in to pressure from right-wing Catholics to turn Catholicism into a one-issue religious sect that shrinks from engagement with those who disagree with us. I applaud his decision. I also applaud Obama for a remarkable speech, one of his best. Obama is willing to engage in reasoned, fair-minded dialogue and to find common ground on which to move forward together. That should be our desire as well.
Do you count the nearly eighty bishops who advised Notre Dame not to do this as right-wingers? And did you not read Obama’ speech? How can one have “dialogue” when he
says flatly: our positions are irreconcilable? And why did Jenkins jump and down when Obama said this?

The overwhelming majority of those who CLAIM to be catholics in America are not Catholic. Liberal and cafeteria “catholics” are not Catholic. That is the whole point. If Notre Dame no longer chooses to be Catholic, that is perfectly all right but it should stop calling itself “Our Lady” and stop claiming to be Catholic.

How can ANYBODY call themselves a catholic and support such an extreme pro death person. :banghead:
Where does it say in the bible? THOU SHALL KILL CHILDREN IN THE WOMB.
People that support the killing of innocence should NOT say they are catholic. :nope:
Every time I hear these comments it reminds me of palm Sunday, when Jesus entered Jerusalem The Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him with waving palm branches, and by covering his path with palm branches :bowdown2:
and then one week later, they were yelling “out crucify” " him crucify him let Barabass go" YES WE CAN :dts:

Mr Jenkins is Pontius Pilate, he washed his hands. :bighanky:

What is this, The Inquisition? I’m sure that nobody on this forum has the power to excommunicate anybody from the Church
Actually, everyone on this forum has the power to excommunicate themselves from the Church.

I wish I saw as much outrage over all of the atrocities happening to people on this earth right now…especially children.
I didn’t realize a woman’s womb was another planet, or that it held something other than children.
Over 1 million people are being killed by malaria every year. Most of them are under the age of 5. Where is the outrage?
Kind of hard to be outraged at a mosquito.
All we can do about abortion is try to prevent it from happening. And laws aren’t going to fully do the trick…it’s going to take a huge change in the cultural views of life to do that. Yet, so many poor and vulnerable people (especially children) are being wiped off the face of the earth (like a holocaust).
How is abortion different from the poor and vulnerable being wiped off the face of the earth, other than the fact that it’s legal. How is it NOT a holocaust?

Obama stated reducing abortions was the common ground we could agree on.

Do you suppose Mr. Obama will agree to Federally mandating 3D Ultrasounds to reduce abortions?

You think he’d agree to mandating a picture of an aborted fetus be prominently displayed in the waiting area of all abortuaries so women fully understand what it is they are doing?

Just exactly what do you think he will do to reduce abortions? Maybe sign a bill allowing partial birth abortions into law, or send piles of the new money he’s printing to Mexico to pay for more abortions? Oh, that’s right, he’s already done both. He sounded good though didn’t he?

Oh, he’s quite an orator alright. Mr. Obama has already proven he’s not willing to trod on the manure he spread at Notre Dame and meet us on that common ground he calls “reducing” abortion. It’s time to wake up everybody!

Pray you don’t fall into the next weak and defenseless group our federal government deems unfit to live next.

Funding abortions in Mexico must be his solution to illegal immigration–kill them before they are able to cross the border.

Eighty out of 400 right? What did the other 320 say???

Silence is deafening, however, seems to me more Bishops of late are speaking out, and in a public way. I heard a comment from someone that (strange as it sounds) since the sex scandal, they’d made an agreement with the government to stay out of each others way. (huh?) Don’t quite get the logic in that one, but?
(some day, I am afraid, the silent ones will be held accountable for the holocaust of millions of the innocent)
Actually, it is hyper hypocritical that Notre Dame and Fr. Jenkins put on the facade of being Catholic at all. I think the Church can do something about that, the question remains…will they?

Would Jesus give Obama an honorary degree?

If the answer is absoltely not then another question would be:

Would Jesus want His Catholic Church ot tolerate Notre Dame calling itself a Catholic institution and honoring someone who was in favor of murdering innocent unborn babies?

I think the answer to that is pretty obvious, too.

All those who honored Obama will one day be held to account.

This is not true. ALL Catholics agree that Jenkins should be fired with his entire board of trustees and Notre Dame should be reformed or closed. The problem is that many pseudo-catholics claim to be Catholics when in fact they are not, this is why uninformed people think that some Catholics have no problem with abortion.
yep, yep, what she said!

the whole thing was/is a sickening scandal. I listened in utter disgust as ‘fr’ Jenkins gushed over Obama. It was frightening, quite honestly, but just another example that Priests are human and can fall just as easily as a lay person. Jenkins has fallen and has fallen hard. 😦

My continued prayers for everyone involved - especiall Bishop D’Arcy. That poor man has to clean this all up. Sad. So sad.

What is this, The Inquisition? I’m sure that nobody on this forum has the power to excommunicate anybody from the Church, so this “you’re not Catholic” stuff is nonsense. This isn’t an elite club for the “goody-goody”. The Church is a hospital for sinners, not for saints.
Maybe it is time to bring “The Inquisition” back and maybe a Crusade.

NOTE: I am not being sarcastic, I am being serious. Time to weed out the ones who go against the teachings and authority of the Church.

If you want to do violence in the name of religion, you are in the wrong religion. The Church has grown up a lot in the past 900 years.

We are at war with the forces that are against the Church both internal and external. Being Catholic does not mean we are to be doormats to those forces. Besides, there are different type of Crusades and I define on my blog what I think “The Next Crusade” is to be. Yes, it may come to violence in the future (which may be inevitable), but not right now.

I can understand how up setting this all is peregrinus_wa and I admit our predecessors like the knights of Malta fought hard battles defending our faith which I am proud of.
Times have changed my friend; we no longer need to physically fight for our faith.
This is more of a spiritual war the only defense we have is our true faith, something that Mr. Jenkins clearly does not have, we must pray that God keeps us from becoming weak sheep.
