Why Christians shouldn't drink alcohol (even if it's in moderation, it's a sin!)

I guess I should clarify, there are some that replace Catholic spirituality with yoga spirituality. This is what I was saying was wrong. There are some that enhance their spirituality with yoga, and as long as they don’t take it too far, I think that is fine.
I heard a Catholic Answers segment on radio that came to this conclusion. the priest giving the answer recommended using the Jesus Prayer as a mantra (“Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me, the sinner”).

Then yes, I agree with you. One should never replace Catholic spirituality with another form.

I know them, havent been there but i have been to AA

I am talking about my stepfather and the father of my sibblings, he died out of alcohol abuse.

Dont get me wrong, i didnt say i dont drink, but i see it a Little bit unfitting to joke about.

What scares me is that prayer warriors and people who is discerning vocations can take this so lightly and throw mockery on me, i cant see how that could be combined with good catholic behaviour.

EDIT:
The internet surely does bring out the worst in people, they say things they should never say in reality, and that is not just about this very thread.
AA is for the alcoholic. Do you suspect that you are or could be? Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to go to open AA meetings to try and understand the alcoholic. But Al-Anon is for the family and friends, it’s YOUR program, and will help you get some perspective and even learn to laugh about this. We crack up A LOT and we don’t walk around with a stick up our…well you know.

You need to find your sense of humor. AAs are some of the funniest people on the planet, and know how to laugh at themselves and their foibles. It’s not unusual that the family members get really, REALLY serious because of all the tragedy they see that is caused by drinking. But it shortens YOUR life. That’s not good.

I know fully well that the people in AA can laugh about their problem, it is because they have reached another stage and are recovering alcoholics, but for the miserable persons in the street that has not reached to that stage, neither admitted that they have a problem, for them the life is just misery and really not very much to laugh about.

So, becuase there are sad people in the world, we shouldn’t laugh? Good grief, loosen up and laugh a little bit. Laughter is the best medicine!

Dude, you NEED to get to Al-Anon. Your thinking is pretty messed up. You can pray for the unrecovered alcoholics yet not scold others for having a sense of humor. People die in car accidents, from cancer, from accidents, from disease, every single day. Millions die from starvation in certain countries. There’s war and famine. I guess Jesus wants us to wear our 😦 face and never joke?

Really?

as you know, it cannot be proved from Scripture that Jesus ever laughed.

Exactly! We all have to laugh… Even God has a sense of humor! Just read the bible. There are plenty of testimonies to that fact. 🙂

It is not what you do, its how you do it, likewise its not what you say, its how you say it.

Of course he has, but i can only think about one occassion that deals with His humor, the Creation of Man.

The other testimonies i would like you to show me.

Start a new thread, please. Title it, “Make Me Laugh - Show Me Where I Can Buy a Sense of Humor.”

I do not suspect i am, I know it for sure, i used to consume 10 gallons of wine per month, and i do laugh about that, in its place, but only with those i know are comfortable with it.

I still am in danger since i do consume the challice and even alcohol free beers, but i know myself, its not the taste, but the effect, when i start to feel a Little Dizzy, then there is no return.

It can go on for Days, weeks, 10 gallons no problem at all, or two bottles of whiskey or 18 beers, never mind as long as it gives the effect.

I have been drinking since i was 15 and i am 47 now so i lost two marriages and four kids, luckily i am nowadays having a better relation with my kids.

Since i am the hidden part, i Always kept my work and so on so nobody knew it, doesnt even show in my face, usually it does but not for me.

OK, now we’re getting somewhere. You were a “functioning” alcoholic, who could hide his addiction. Do you still go to AA meetings?

Can’t prove he ever went to the bathroom either, but I’m pretty sure he did.
I wouldn’t know. but one is a necessary function, and, as you can tell from this thread, a sense of humor is not.

Even so, I am sure he did laughed tho! He was after all, part human.
Jesus was fully human, in hypostatic union with His fully divine nature.

did I say that right? I almost used latin, and I hate latin… what, its greek? I hate greek too.

Yes i do, otherwise i will soon be back there again and run the gauntlet one more time, and that in its turn leads to excessive drinking and then confession.
"Oh father forgive me i have sinned and has been drinking excessively, which in its turn leads to other sins, and on and on.

As i said before, it is not a sin to drink modestly but i cant do that, when the effect turns in my sense turns out and then im driving my race one more time, “having fun”

1 Timothy 5:23 Stop drinking only water, but have a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
Despite the seeming counsel against teetotalling Paul gave Timothy here. One doesn’t really have to drink alcohol.

Having “a little” alcohol with a meal can kill some germs and bacteria and keep them from entering the body. Water in Timothy’s time was probably not as pure as what comes out of our taps.

While I agreed with the many people who got all over the OP for the “no alcohol” opinion. That option is allowed and it’s not sinful to give up alcohol altogether.

Again, while I agreed with the fact that Jesus drank wine, and made wine, and that alcohol
is allowed for drinking for Christians. The OP is right to call out its dangers. There is much in scripture against Drunkenness and it is one of the seven deadly sins.

While Sky River (the original OP) took things too far in asserting sin to even moderate drinking … I appreciate hearing the warning. A good warning may keep a moderate or infrequent “drinker” at the acceptable level.

Whoever made the grape juice comment is right too. Kept in skins without refrigeration “grape juice” ferments pretty quickly. In Jesus’ time not even the emperor had a refrigerator.
Burt Lancaster (as Elmer Gantry): “As long as I got a foot, I’ll kick booze. And, as long as I got a fist, I’ll punch it. And, as long as I got a tooth, I’ll bite it. And, when I’m old and gray and toothless and bootless, I’ll gum it till I go to heaven and booze goes to hell”.

It’s an open and shut case: Jesus both drank wine and provided it for parties.

Either Jesus is a sinner or responsible alcohol use is moral. Those taking the first position have more serious theological problems to address!
