Why Christopher Columbus wasn't the hero we learned about in school

St. Joan of Arc and St. Mary Magdalene had bad reputations, but how did that work out?

Who says it’s for that sake? I’m sorry, I don’t want the Knights to get ‘woke’.
Not everything has to be filtered through this silly culture war lens. Just because “woke” people on Twitter are annoying and overly dramatic doesn’t mean that there isn’t sometimes a genuinely good argument in favor of change.

Everything is being filtered now through the culture wars lens.

We don’t have to jettison our reason just because other people are. Columbus is not a victim of historical revisionism or misapplied modern standards. He’s not being criticized for failing to be pro-trans or micro-aggressions. He’s criticized because he was genuinely not a good guy, and having a prominent Catholic organization named after him is not a good look.

Sometimes people have legitimate points that can’t be dismissed as overly sensitive snowflaking or whatever.

That is true. However, what I see now is everyone bending over backwards to not offend, not be on the ‘wrong side’, apologizing for everything they possibly can. It’s sickening.

Sure, but you have to take these cases as they come. Sometimes the criticisms will have merit, sometimes they won’t. If someone criticized Columbus for not having enough lesbians on his staff as a governor, I’d join you in rolling your eyes. This ain’t that, though.

I guess all I’m saying is that just because sometimes criticisms are silly woke virtue signaling doesn’t mean they always are.

Before the Order changes its name, I demand the following damnatio memoriae exercises be carried out:
  • Colombia → La Republica de No Más Oro
  • Columbia Sportswear → White Privilege Outfitters
  • Columbia Pictures → Cute Statue Lady with Shiny Torch
  • Columbia University → Ivory Tower Intellectual Haven
  • Columbia River → Canoe Route 66
  • District of Columbia → Trumpian Autonomous Zone
It’s only fair.

Sure, that’s fine. Although maybe the standard for a Catholic fraternal organization should different than for a movie company, especially since “Columbia” is a much more attenuated relationship to the man himself.

Perhaps the time has come to eventually rebrand them as the Fr McGivney Society.
Or The Knights of McGivney! 😃

I like the idea of keeping the word “Knights” in there, anyway. Or some other title like ‘Brothers’ or ‘Sons’, or something otherwise creative and dignifying.

Five years before Columbus’ arrival to the West Indies, indigenous tribes had already sacrificed as many as 84,000 men, women, and children at the re-consecration of the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan. People are quick to accuse Columbus of all sorts of atrocities, yet fail to recognize how the Christian presence of European explorers served to end some of the barbaric practices of local tribes.

I’m not saying that the man was a saint, but he was certainly just a man of his time who is a part of our history whether we care to acknowledge it or not. Regardless of Columbus’ actions, there is no justification in tearing down statues and vandalizing the community to protest against a man who died 500 years ago. It’s absurd to try and erase history; if we do, we will sure as heck be repeating it again in the future.

I’m not sure why we even celebrate anything about Columbus…apparently he never even landed in what is the USA…

I’m not sure why we even celebrate anything about Neil Armstrong…apparently he never even landed in what is another planet…

Even better, so that they don’t have to change the KOC logo

You’re right…he didn’t land on another planet…he landed on the moon

So would you support pulling down Neil Armstrong statues, and renaming his schools and airports, because he didn’t reach Mars and he was complicit in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster?
