Why did you leave the Catholic Church?

To MariaG,
I am sorry I did not go into detail in my post about the struggles I am having as they are very personal & I was trying to be brief. Wanted to clarify a couple things. I never left the Church even during my struggles. Also, after learning about the Catholic Church & all her teachings I believe that it is the one true Church started by Christ Himself & that it holds the fullness of the truth. My husband left the Church in his teens in search of the truth & it led him right back to the Catholic Church. He did alot of reasearch, especially historical & is currently schooling for his degree in Theology. I have learned alot on my own & through my husband as well. My faithfullness or lack of, lies moreso with me & my circumstances rather than the Church. I think it stems from my human nature of course but I do believe Satan puts doubts in your head when he sees an opening & tries to hold onto you. Several saints have went through similar situations, St. Therese, St. Rita, etc. I was never raised knowing about God but it was by God’s grace that He still made Himself known to me & led me to my husband & then the Catholic Church. All my life Satan has been linguring & waiting for me is what I believe. May sound stupid to you, but it is the truth. And the closer I become to God, the stronger Satan tries to lead me away. It’s hard for me to explain but it is the truth. It’s me that is standing in my own way & not the Catholic Church as I have no doubt about the Church. Maybe I will explain more in detail sometime. Gotta fix dinner for my family now.

God bless all of you!
BlessedMama
No, it wasn’t you. I was confused briefly because someone answered my post to you and I mistakenly thought it was you.

From reading your post I thought (correctly) that you were a struggling Catholic.

The good news is though that you are becoming a strong Christian! If you weren’t becoming a strong Christian, there would be no reason for Satan to even bother with you.

Always remember, you have been given a great gift in your faith in Christ and His Church. I know whenever I start to have doubts, Christ always brings me straight back to that gift He gave me also.

I too, was so blessed. First blessed with the gift of faith in Christ, then His Holy Word, and then His Church. It is a wonderful gift that not all have. Count your blessings:)

God Bless,
Maria

Why I left the Catholic Church…

there are a number of reasons why I left the RCC and a number of reasons why I dont go back.

Quick rundown…Grew up in an unreligious home. Mother is RCC, father is agnostic…at best.

As a youngster, I went with my friend to a mass. Did not know anything, got yelled at by the priest because I spit the host out (I had no idea what it was suppose to represent). Stayed away from it for awhile until I met my wife. Her family was RCC and I went through the RCC classes and the marriage classes.

Got married, attended church “religously” each sunday and paid my tithe. Couldnt wait to get out of church. the items talked about didnt apply to my life, so I was not interested.

9 years later, barely going. My wife talks about this book by donald neale called “conversations with God”. In the past I watched that tv show “talking with ghosts” or whatever it was called with John Edwards. Anyway, as I am reading this book, I am getting the heebie jeebies because it is basically making JC into one of many wise people and it is all about energy and we will all go to heaven, etc. It did not square with what little I knew.

Anyway, as time goes on, I just get sick of people “telling” me what to believe. I said that I am going to seriously and unbiasedly as possible look at the major religions (and I do consider athiesm a religion). I wont bore anyone with the details of the struggle, but I was really fighting between athiesm and Christianity. It got to the point that I was “driven” to my knees where I gave my most heartfelt prayer that if he exists to show me and I would do whatever I could to seek the truth…even if that meant that I was talking to myself. No magical lightning strike…no nothing…just an undescribable peace.

Shortly after that after doing further investigation, I removed athiesm/agnosticism from the list. I made myself a promise that I would let no man tell me what the bible says. I wanted to read it for myself and set out to figure out what I should believe. I looked into the LDS, JW’s, Islam, buddhism, hinduism, and a few others. Through this entire period, I kept going to the RCC, attending mass and scouring websites and books for answers.

It was funny. I started bringing my bible to church and I would get some of the strangest stares from people…including the priests. I made the decision to leave the RCC while at mass one Sunday. After a number of weeks, I kept noticing that not only did the priest not read what was in the bible, he would say something that didnt jive with what the bible said once you read the chapter before and after.

My wife’s side of the family was VERY upset about my decision. They would not listen to reason…sadder still, they could not defend what they believed.

I dove into the bible and other books, basically developing my own heurmenutic style (actually, it was reading the bible as historical literature…where it needs to be read that way.) The example I have been told is you wouldnt read the front page the same way you would read the funnies.

I began delving into apologetics and using the best arguments on both sides to determine truth (although the final judgment was scripture).

I have listened to peter kreeft (not a fan although I respect what he has done in the pro life arena) and a number of other RCC apologists as well as well meaning RCC’s and I dont think that I will ever go back. I am eagerly awaiting frank beckwith’s book to get a better understanding as to why he decided to “return to rome”.

Anyway, why I left the RCC…(no particular order)
  1. I dont believe that the pope is the vicar of christ
  2. I dont believe that Mary, although highly favored, was bodily assumed into heaven
  3. I dont believe that Mary remained a virgin her entire life
  4. I dont believe that baptism removes original sin…I do believe that baptism is something that you should do in obedience to JC, but that it is not required for salvation. And when I say required, mean I am a 34 yr old, believe in JC to pay for my sins and NEVER get baptised, not the whole deathbed confession thing
  5. I dont believe that the RCC is what the original church fathers had intended
  6. I dont believe in mortal/venial sins in the way that the RCC has characterized them as it relates to salvation
  7. I believe that JC paid for all sins, past/present/future, not that he opened the gates
  8. I dont believe in transubstantiation
  9. I do believe in the 5 solas in that I mean that it is in faith alone, grace alone, for God’s glory alone, in Christ alone, by scripture alone
  10. I believe in eternal security (I am still working on some aspects of this)
  11. I do not believe in a magesterium that way the RCC has it set up

(rest of the post…I was over my character limit)

Actually, I could go on, but a big beef is the council of trent. I dont believe the pope is the vicar, that mary was a vigin her entire life and that she was assumed into heaven. the RCC anathematizes me for that. My heart cant embrace what my mind doesnt believe. I would be lieing to myself and my God to do no less. Actually, this is a bad butchering of what Luther said…but it rings true.

I have read books, listened to debates, etc. and I still hold to my position based on the evidence.

Now I hope that one of you (like the last time I signed on and tried to give a heartfelt post) doesnt read this call me some anti-catholic and then spend the rest of the time slapping each other on the back on how you showed me a thing or two for attacking the true church (by the way ad hominim attacks dont win any for the kingdom…be mindful of that).

I am giving my reason for leaving the church. I hope that you can accept it in the spirit it was given.

One thing that I do find funny in my conversations with RCC is that I hear so many contradictory statements. My understanding to get to the official church teachings is to get a copy of the CCC. NO pun or insult intended, but it is my understanding, your bible. To find official RCC teaching, the CCC is THE FINAL stop? I have heard RCC apologists contradict other apologists. to further clarify, the bible and magesteriums official teaching is in the CCC.

I ask this because I want to make sure that I accurately understand the RCC position. When I am talking to an RCC, I dont want to hear their interpretation, I want to hear the RCC position…that they are required (where stated) to obey and agree with.

May the holy spirit assist us in our journey for truth.

Please forgive me. I was still replying when real life interrupted. Here is the rest of my “continued” along with the reply to your next post, probably broken into several posts.
I’m told I have to pray a “rosary”. WHY must I repeat a “Hail Mary” all those times?
Again, you were taught wrong. The Rosary is an optional prayer.

Why must you repeat scripture over and over again? First, because scripture is always profitable and the Hail Mary is mad up almost entirely of Scripture, except for the part where we ask her to pray for us, and asking other Christians to pray for us is also scriptural.

Second, the way the rosary is set up is to use it as a form of contemplative and meditative prayer. That means that while we say the words, the scripture, we should be meditating or contemplating different aspects of Christ’s life. It is just another way to draw closer to Christ, using a tool that many find easier than simply trying to think on Christ without any aids.

Third, all prayer that has us concentrating on Christ so fully can only be a good thing.

If you never concentrated on Christ while praying the Rosary, you have never prayed the Rosary as it is intended.
What’s the difference between a rosary and prayer beads used by other religions?
 How do I know? I only study the truth and don’t study lies. I am not surpised that if other religions use some kind of beads or things since many of them older and in ancient times people used things like beads or counting devices to help them remember and keep track of things.

That is like saying, “Why do Protestants believe in …” and compare anything you want to a pagan religion. People are similar creatures but just because practices are similar, does not mean they are from the same source.
Being born again and filled with the Holy Spirit showed me that the Holy Spirit is being held back by traditions of men.
You would need to be more specific here as to what “tradition of men” you would be referring to.
WHY does it matter to our Salvation if Mary remained a virgin or not? It wouldn’t change a thing so mentioning it at all is not necessary.
Why does it matte if Mary remained a virgin? Because it further helps define the true divinity of Christ which is a very important thing.

That is what you will find about the Marian doctrines. They are important not for what they say about Mary, but for how they magnify the Lord(Luke 1:46) and show up close who Christ is.
WHY should we take the “body” and “blood” literally and not plucking out eyeballs or cutting off hands? WHY is that when Jesus calls the bread and wine His body and blood you take it literally but not when He calls Himself the “Gate” or “Vine”?
Because if we take the body and blood figuratively it makes no sense at all since the term “eat my body, drink my blood” already had a well known usage among Jews in Jesus’ time as well as today with current arabic peoples. It means to inflict serious harm upon a person.

Which means that Jesus words would have then meant:

Unless a person hurts me and defames me, they will not have eternal life.

And that is complete nonsense, unless you are somehow claiming your church teaches that one must revile Jesus to recieve eternal life?
Finally, the RCC has a history of compromising with religions and traditions outside itself just to “win” people over. There can’t be no compromise between the “Church” and Islam nor with evolution.
You would need to be more specific.

I left a religion who claims it’s THE Church of Jesus Christ. I went to a congregation who’s foundation is Jesus, Himself
And your claim is correct but the Catholic Church’s is incorrect because…

756 "Often, too, the Church is called the *building *of God. The Lord compared himself to the stone which the builders rejected, but which was made into the corner-stone. On this foundation the Church is built by the apostles and from it the Church receives solidity and unity. This edifice has many names to describe it: the house of God in which his *family *dwells; the household of God in the Spirit; the dwelling-place of God among men; and, especially, the holy temple. This temple, symbolized in places of worship built out of stone, is praised by the Fathers and, not without reason, is compared in the liturgy to the Holy City, the New Jerusalem. As living stones we here on earth are built into it. It is this holy city that is seen by John as it comes down out of heaven from God when the world is made anew, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.148

148 LG 6; Cf. 1 Cor 3:9; Mt 21:42 and parallels; Acts 4:11; 1 Pet 2:7; Ps 118:22; 1 Cor 3:11; 1 Tim 3:15; Eph 2:19-22; Rev 21:3; 1 Pet 2:5; Rev 21:1-2.
First, I got saved at the Black Horse Chapel, Fort Hood, Texas in 1986.
So, you were going to and studying with another Christian denomination while attending the Catholic Church? And did you also go to Catholic bible study as well? Understand what the different parts of Mass meant? Where they were in scripture? Or did you only look for more about the Lord from a church that believes that the Catholic church has added traditions of men?

Second, I don’t mind asking others to pray for me and i pray for people, too. I simply cannot believe that Mary would come back and give instruction for the “church” when Jesus did that while He was here.
And you are not required to as a Catholic Christian.

Catholic teaching specifically tells us that we are not bound to believe any private revelations at all. They simply tell us which ones do not contradict the message of Christ and can be believed in.
You see thousands of people rushing to see an office window because a smear looks like Mary. Others longed to see a grilled cheese sandwich. Actually, I think it’s a demon behind it just trying to make the “church” look stupid… and it’s working.
I would agree with you. But last time I checked, the Church has never said that Mary has appeared in a grilled chees sandwich.

But think about this critically. Why would Satan be behind these spurious and stupid things like Mary appearing in a grilled chees sandwich? Why? What is the profit to Satan?

Because the more people lump all apparitions of Mary in with these spurious ones, the less who will come to Christ. Our Lady of Guadaloupe in Latin America was responsible for bringing millions to Christ. Satan is behind things like the grilled cheese sandwich just to get even one person to doubt the Christ would send His mother to spread the gospel even after her death on earth.
In Scripture, we’re taught all we need to know in order to get back with God and we’re shown that the disciples did and what they wrote.
And who does scripture tell us to look to when there are disputes among Christians? The Church.

We see in scripture a clear order and authority of how the Christian church will look.

Scripture also tells us not that Christ instructed the apostles to write it all down so future Christians would have a handbook to follow but to entrust it to faithful men who will teach others.

Scripture does tell us what to do. And it tells to watch out for false teachers who will come along teaching false things. Who came along? Protestants or Catholics?
What is not in Scripture that hesitates your Salvation? If it’s enough, that’s all we need to have. If not, what?
 What? I don’t understand your question. specifically “hesitates you salvation”.

And I never said one could not be saved through scripture alone. The Holy Spirit is able to lead many to salvation through scripture. But scripture itself does not teach that scripture is the final authority that is self interpreting. Scripture teaches that the Church is the final authority to interpret scripture.
Does it matter to ANYBODY’S Salvation wether or not Mary remained a virgin? Or what DID happen to Joseph? Or where or how the disciples died?
I answered this above but it bears repeating. The doctrines about Mary help to define Christ. And defining Christ is very important indeed.

I am not aware of any doctrine of Joseph that you could be referring to. Maybe you could be more specific here.

As to the disciples, again, what are you referring to although I would say at least one is important enough to know about since it is directly recorded in scripture and teaches us true forgiveness with the death of the first martyr, Stephen.
The only thing that really matters is: is Jesus your Judge or your Savior?
He is both.
You pick how you want to worship Him, but don’t tell me that I’m wrong because I’m following Jesus and not a group of people who claim to the the “church”.
If you reread the posts, I was not saying that you are wrong in where or what you are doing now, I was saying that you are wrong to say that because you never met Christ while in the Catholic Church, that He is not there. And that seems to be your view.

Since your experience was empty in the Catholic Church, you seem to think the gospel of Christ is not there.

You are quite simply, wrong. I pray that you can swallow your pride to admit that I never said you were wrong about where you are at now, but that the hardest thing to admit is that you were blind to Christ all the years you were in the Catholic Church.

The Holy Spirit is alive and well in the Catholic church as well as many Protestant denominations.

God bless,
Maria

Say the Rosary every day…
Pray, pray a lot and offer sacrifices for sinners…
I’m Our Lady of the Rosary.
**Only I **will be able to help you.
…In the end My Immaculate Heart will triumph."
In 1917 the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared in a tiny Portuguese village. Her prophecies of World War II and the rise of communism, her plea for penance, and her promise of the conversion of Russia are among the dramatic moments in this fascinating account of a modern miracle. IN saying that “**Only I **will be able to help you.” She was saying that only she was bringing prophecies that would be of help.
"The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, wheter temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families…that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem
, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary."
So you don’t believe that pray helps? You don’t believe that God answers prayers. Did He say that he will answer our prayers or not?

Now I hope that one of you (like the last time I signed on and tried to give a heartfelt post) doesnt read this call me some anti-catholic and then spend the rest of the time slapping each other on the back on how you showed me a thing or two for attacking the true church (by the way ad hominim attacks dont win any for the kingdom…be mindful of that).

of the adjacent ten small beads (also refered to as a decade) recite a Hail Mary while reflecting on the mystery.

As I thought you know nothing about the Rosary… The rosary is a lot more then saying a bunch of Hail Mary’s. Most of the Rosary is directly out of the bible… you know the one you claim to follow? So you think its a sacrilege to pray to God and to reflect on the Bible? What an odd view point for a Christian to take. Here is a very small part of one rosary.
The Rosary is composed, principally and in substance, of the prayer of Christ and the Angelic Salutation, that is, the Our Father and the Hail Mary, it was without doubt the first prayer and the principal devotion of the faithful and has been in use all through the centuries, from the time of the apostles and disciples down to the present.
These are the prayers said during the rosary… between the prayers we recite verses from the bible and reflect on them.

Our Father — I’m not going to bother to put the words to this prayer here because I’m sure you know it.

Glory Be (Gloria) Hail Mary (Ave Maria)
Glory be to the Father, Hail Mary, full of Grace,
and to the Son, The Lord is with thee,
and to the Holy Spirit. Blessed art thou amongst women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. (Luke 1:42)
As it was in the beginning,
is now, Holy Mary, Mother of God
and ever shall be, Pray for us, sinners,
world without end. Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen
Amen.

Fatima Prayer
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins.
Save us from the fires of Hell;
lead all souls into Heaven,
especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
Amen.

Our Father … ‘I tell you most solemnly, you will be sorrowful,/ but your sorrow will turn to joy.’ John 16:20
Hail Mary … ‘For I shall see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy,/ and that joy no one shall take from you.’
John 16:22
Hail Mary … At the first sign of dawn, they went to the tomb/ with the spices they had prepared. Luke 24:1
Hail Mary … And all at once the angel of the Lord, descending from heaven,/ came and rolled away the stone and sat on it. **Matthew 28:2 **
Hail Mary … ‘I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here.’ Matthew 28:5-6
Hail Mary … ‘He has risen from the dead. Come and see the place where he lay.’ Luke 24:6; Matthew 28:6-7
Hail Mary … ‘And now he is going before you to Galilee;/ it is there you will see him.’ Matthew 28:7
Hail Mary … And the women came out from the tomb/ filled with awe and great joy. Mark 16:8; Matthew 28:8
Hail Mary … ‘I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live.’
John 11:25
Hail Mary … ‘And whoever lives and believes in me/ will never die.’ John 11:26
Hail Mary … Glory be … Oh my Jesus …

Hi
That is not correct, I don’t believe that, it would be done peacefully for sure.
Thanks
I am an Ahmadi – a peaceful faith in Islam bridging gaps between faiths/denominations/religions/agnostics
You are acknowledging that a “gap” exists between Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. You reject the teaching of the Quran that this gap will be closed by the sword?

Do you think that the Jews and the Christians are all so ignorant and cowardly that they will not stand up for their faith?

Islam requires submission to the God of Mohammed. Those that do not refuse to submit to Islam will be put to the sword. If you behead all of us peacefully, you will go to Paradise and have 70 virgins!

In the 2nd and 3rd chapters of Revelation we find
the Seven Churches in Asia being addressed by
the Spirit of Christ… 2 of these churches receive
mainly supportive, encouraging words while 5 of
them receive some encouragement and varying
degrees of correction/warnings.

letters are for the church body as a whole
and also to individual believers in those church
bodies. Some of the churches have strayed very
far from the original mission/purpose of God and
are in dangerous waters.

I like to call the letters to the Seven Churches…
“The Church Diagnostic Exam!”

May the Spirit of God teach us through our
reading and lead us…

So, where do you see that the Catholic Church fits in here?

Rosary beads isn’t as old as the RCC. “Prayer beads” have been used by other religions for years before.
PJII also gave his decision on evolution.

Nuff said.
Enough said? Not really.

But let me get this straight, JPII gave his view on evolution, which is that we can believe in it as long as we do not discard God’s divine hand in it. I assume you believe this is wrong because the Bible says the earth was created in 6 days?

Okay, earth is young because the bible says so. Literal translation.

This is my body. Figurative.

Seems as if you pick and choose what you believe is literal and what is not. I disagree with your interpretation of Scripture.

I was going to go bit by bit in the rest of your post, but it is so much of a rant and hard to follow that I think my patience is done. I think I will get to the one below.
The “traditions” of the Apostles that I use are what was written in the New Testament and in Acts. THAT’S “Apostolic tradition”, NOT what THEIR followers said or did.
Interesting, so how did you decide that the interpretation of scripture you use is correct? Because the you view of the Eucharist is nowhere in Scripture. To believe so is to make nonsense out of God’s inspired word.

To think that the interpretation of Eat my Body and drink my blood is anything but literal you are saying that one must do harm to Christ if one is to have eternal life.

Rosary beads isn’t as old as the RCC. “Prayer beads” have been used by other religions for years before. …
You are right that Christians did not invent prayer beads. We also did not invent many of the other things that are found Christianity. There are many things that were used for thousands of years before Jesus was born that Christians use: Prayer, books of scripture, baptism, places of worship and on and on. Does this mean that it is all wrong and must be thrown out because pagans did it first?
Prayer beads come from a time when most of mankind was illiterate. Similar strings of bead, or knotted string, were used for all kinds of things. For example early man used them to keep count of their flocks, to keep a record of how many coins they had, etc. It was an easy way to do it because a string a bead was an easy way to add and/or subtract from the count. Early Christians used to use rocks to count prayer… like a bowl filled with 100 pebbles, a prayer said for each. That way a person did not have to count, especially in a time when most people could not count 100. So when the bowl was empty, the worshiper knew they were done.
Today we live in a country in which most people can read. But this was not the case in past centuries. A person would put huge efforts into memorizing parts of the Bible. They could not read so the only way to contemplate it was to ‘read’ it in their mind. Prayer beads were used to help the person keep their place. The reason that the beads are grouped in certain ways is to help them organize the contemplation into sections that they can recall. So as they mediated they would use the beads to easily keep their place and concentrate no the contemplation.
Many people, not just Catholics continue with this practice. It is a totally different experience to memorize the scripture and then contemplate on it, instead of always having to look at the printed page.
Using prayer beads is no different then using book marks in your bible to mark something you want to be able to find easily.

I guess that in your way of thinking, all those people in the early church who memorized the bible and then used prayer beads to keep track of the chapers were just plain evil??? 🤷

Let’s not forget that CAF crashed near the end of '06. Many posters lost their posting and some lost their screen names.

I did note earlier macleod has been a member since early '06. So I’m aware that it is possible that their posting were “lost” do to the crash.

However, being unsure of this I wanted to give Macleod a chance to respond without sound harsh or make clams that they never posted before.

I did NOT want to assume that it they never posted before, and I did NOT want to assume that their post was lost do to the crash.

That is why I just simply told them I was  by what posting they are referring to because according to the profile they only have 2 postings and these 2 posting are in this thread.

In this case it’s possible that the profile is wrong…

The trilemma is incomplete. Lewis ignores the possibility that there was a very real, sane, truthful preacher of morals from Galilee who never claimed to be anything more than human but was deified after his martyrdom.
So you believe that the followers of Jesus were either liars or insane? They preached the same morals that you admitted are what preclude Jesus from being seen as insane. What did His followers stand to gain by spreading lies that they knew would bring down viscious persecutions on them?

Very true. And very charitable to believe so:)

Hi
I don’t hold that IslamQuran enjoins one to spread it with sword. It spread for its reasonable arguments. Quran says; bring forth your arguments if you have any, so it is a reason oriented Religion. There is no need of any sword for spreading Islam, please be sure. Please quote one incident in which Muhammad killed any person, in Mecca or Madina; there is none. Peace.

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. (Matthew 7:13)

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)

Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall. (Matthew 7:24-27)

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. (2 John 9)

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. (John 10:27)

And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. They will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers. (John 10:4-5)

blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch. (Matthew 15:14).
