Why did you leave the Catholic Church?

I left because I needed space. I had gone to Catholic school just prior and during Vatican 2 (I’m showing my age!) and the emphasis was more on being scared of God and making sure to do rituals rather than on the love of God and the person of Jesus.

God is both merciful as well as just, but I really felt scared of Him; that if He could send children to Purgatory (which is what the teaching sisters said) for such sins as fighting with their siblings, then I was out of there.

I didn’t go to any other church, but read the Scriptures on my own. Heavenly Father in the Bible was not the frightening figure of my catechism class, I discovered. It’s been 30 years or so and I am carefully checking things out again.
Hi:)

Welcome to the forums.

Sadly, there are many like you of your/our age group. Very poor teachers that resulted in no heart understanding of Christ as well as very poor head understanding (or heart) of Catholic teachings.

I am glad to hear you read the Scriptures:thumbsup:

You might want to go and pick up a catechism as well. I found it wonderful to read what the Catholic Church teaches and look up the scripture references that show where this teaching is in scripture.

You will find the loving God you have discovered in Scripture also is taught by the Catholic Church, or should be.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church

PROLOGUE

"FATHER, . . . this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."1 "God our Savior desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."2 "There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved"3 - than the name of JESUS.
1 Jn 17 3.
2 1 Tim 2:3-4.
3 Acts 4:12.

God Bless,
Maria

I see the Mass as not just something that is repeated week after week, but that it’s supposed to be LIVED.
Do you confess your sin as soon as you commit it or do you wait until Mass? Since you’re saying “I confess…” out loud, so are the people around you. Do you forgive them? Out loud? The “binding and loosening” comes alive then.
Do you confess your creed in public? When people see you, do they call you a “Jesus Freak”? Does His Light shine where ever you go?
Do you call God your “Father”? Do you praise His Name? Do you pray for His Will here on earth? Do you ask Him to spiritually feed you?
Forgiveness of sins: Jesus said whatever you measure you’ll be measured by. So, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” can say “forgive me just the same way I forgive others.” If you bring back some one’s sin, you’re asking God to remind you of yours.

Communion. Jesus said to invite the poor into your house. Do you invite the needy over? Do you bless the needy personally? One family was out of gas and I gave them gas money. People could really use it nowadays.
The disciples also broke bread (ate) in other’s homes. We’re supposed to commune with others.

Do you have an altar at home? A prayer closet?

I’m sorry to say that all of this became alive and personal AFTER I left the catholic religion. (No, you CAN’T ball up all the other religions together)
I tried to go back but I see the Holy Spirit being bound there for a “Holy Day of Obligation”, “Feast of Pentecost”, where a Mass is said, repeating the same things that I just said the Sunday before. (“I confess”, Apostles Creed, “Our Father”, etc.)

The Pentecostal church that I go to (can’t speak for others) is full of the Holy Spirit and let’s Him run things. I feel the Life of Christ there. Not only do I feel good there, but I get “spanked” by the Holy Spirit when I need it.
It’s weird but I do fine during the week. I feel filled with the Holy Spirit and am praiseful of the Lord. It’s just when I get to church and see so many of the other parishioners look bored and anxious to leave, overhearing parents talk about non-church related issues during mass in front of their kids, some wearing indecent clothing for church…just generally not wanting to be there truly for the Lord…it dampens my spirit. I’ve tried singing and reciting with passion during mass, but I got so many annoyed looks I stopped.

My church is a very subdued church. I went a few times to a charismatic (sp?) group that meets once a week at my church and it was a wonderful experience. Unfortunately my schedule has changed and I can’t go anymore. That group reminded me of when I went to the Protestant mass during bootcamp (just to get out of the barrack, not really looking for spirituality). That mass was very engaging.

NO pentecostal service should EVER be INTERUPTED by a spontaneous movement of the HolySpirit. Paul specifically speaks to this in Corinthians.

However, I do understand that if you were just saying the prayers by rote in the Catholic Church, then you truly were not praying and pleasing God.

What you need to realize however, is that just because you did not open your heart to Christ’s knocking in the Catholic church does not mean others say things by rote and fail to listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes the hardest thing to realize is that the problem was not in the Church you were in, but within yourself. It is a humbling thing to realize the number of years one wasted, and sometimes is easier for people to assume that God is not there in the first place instead of admitting any fault of their own.

You should someday, find a Charasmatic service close(or not so close:( ) to you.

May God bless you,
Maria
Actually, it was AFTER I was born-again that I realized that the problem was the religion I was in. I was told to wear a scapular to escape Hell when it’s the Blood of Jesus that washes away my sin.
I was praying to Mary and “saints” when Jesus says to pray directly to God in His Name. He said to ask for anything in His Name.
I’m told I have to pray a “rosary”. WHY must I repeat a “Hail Mary” all those times? What’s the difference between a rosary and prayer beads used by other religions?

Being born again and filled with the Holy Spirit showed me that the Holy Spirit is being held back by traditions of men.

WHY does it matter to our Salvation if Mary remained a virgin or not? It wouldn’t change a thing so mentioning it at all is not necessary.

WHY should we take the “body” and “blood” literally and not plucking out eyeballs or cutting off hands? WHY is that when Jesus calls the bread and wine His body and blood you take it literally but not when He calls Himself the “Gate” or “Vine”?

Finally, the RCC has a history of compromising with religions and traditions outside itself just to “win” people over. There can’t be no compromise between the “Church” and Islam nor with evolution.

I left a religion who claims it’s THE Church of Jesus Christ. I went to a congregation who’s foundation is Jesus, Himself.

I used to see the other people that way, too: anxious to leave. Now, I don’t want to leave!

I can’t see people sitting on the pews like the cartoon character Droopy saying “I’m so happy” in a monotone voice. Since being born again I’m bouncy like Tigger and not like Eeyore.

And where did you have this born again experience?
I was told to wear a scapular to escape Hell when it’s the Blood of Jesus that washes away my sin.
Two separate issues here. First one is that the person who told you to escape hell by wearing a scapular has succombed to superstition, and doesn’t know what Catholic teaching is. You are correct when you say that it is the Blood of Christ that will cleanse you from sin.

The only reason one who wears a scapular would escape hell is because of the blood of Christ and wearing the scapular is a constant reminder of Christ and have faith in Him.

Q: I’m distressed by a pamphlet I’ve seen on the brown scapular of our Lady of Mt. Carmel. On the front panel it calls the scapular "the assurance of salvation. "

A: You’re right. It is distressing that people who should know better so grossly misrepresent the Catholic Church’s teaching about salvation and about scapulars. Let’s set the record straight. (Pay close attention, please.)

First, the Catholic Church teaches that there is only one person who can save us, and that person is Jesus Christ.

Second, the Church considers wearing the brown scapular, like praying the rosary, to be a good and helpful way of cultivating a devotion to our Lady. The scapular is like a wedding ring. Wearing a wedding ring doesn’t make one married; rather, the ring is an external sign symbolizing the inward reality of the marriage covenant. The same is true of the scapular. Its purpose is to remind the wearer and others who see it that the wearer has a devotion to our Lady. There are absolutely no magical properties ascribed to scapulars. They are not good luck charms.

Third, Mary promised that, with certain conditions fulfilled, she would intercede with God in a special way on behalf of people who die wearing a scapular. But she never said (nor would she) that the scapular is an “assurance of salvation.”

Repeat: The Catholic Church teaches that salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ and, by his grace, in obedience to his commands (“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not from you; it is the gift of God. It is not from works, so no one may boast” [Eph. 2:8-9; see Phil. 2:13, Col. 1:29, Jas.2:14-26]).

Furthermore, the Church does not teach that one must wear the scapular, pray the rosary, or cultivate a devotion to Mary. Although the Church recommends these things as ways of enhancing one’s spiritual life and drawing closer to Christ by asking Mary’s intercession and by imitating her way of life (see Heb. 13:7), one can be a good Catholic and go to heaven never having worn a scapular or having said a single Hail Mary.

Whoever produced that pamphlet should expurgate the offending statement from future printings. The pamphlet misrepresents Catholic teaching on salvation, distorts Mary’s true role in God’s plan of salvation, perpetuates the false idea that Catholic piety is superstitious, and is a serious source of scandal to those who are given the impression that Catholics believe in salvation by works.

I was praying to Mary and “saints” when Jesus says to pray directly to God in His Name. He said to ask for anything in His Name.
If you prayed to Mary as you pray to God, again, you were taught wrong. In the Catholic Church, there are two different forms of “pray”. In Latin, the official language of the Church, it is much easier to see the distinction than in English which has had a language shift and a narrowed definition of the word to “pray”.

“Praying to Mary” in today’s language would be more properly expressed as asking Mary to pray for us. And unless you are claiming that those who are alive in Christ are actually dead or you never should ask any fellow Christian alive in Christ to pray for you, you really shouldn’t have any objection to Christians asking other members of the body of Christ to pray for one another as Scripture tell us to.

Maria, you really are very patient and kind, just wanted to tell you that.
And your warning about the forums was very wise.😉

Kujo –
When has the Catholic Church ever compromised a doctrine or dogma with another religion – for ANY reason?

**Your church is filled with “Traditions of men” and not “Apostolic tradition”. **
You believe in altar calls and those aren’t mentioned in scripture. In fact, as a Protestant, you reject the very notion of having an altar because that would imply that you are sacrificing something during your services.
Jesus said that if “your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out”. Has your eye EVER caused you to sin – or is it your heart?

**As for the context of Jesus instructing his followers to eat his flesh and drink his blood – he NEVER gave them another explanation. In every other case in the gospels, Jesus would explain the meaning of his parables when asked or put on the spot. **
When the followers who could not believe what he was saying to them turned and left, Jesus looked at his apostles and said, “Do you also want to leave?” (John 6:67)
He KNEW what he was saying shocked those who left (John 6:61) yet he offered no further explanation because he MEANT what he said. He repeated himself 3 times and made no attempt to describe in any other manner what he had told them.
You say you left a religion who claims it’s THE Church of Jesus Christ. Scripture says that it IS THE Church of Christ, whereas, you joined a church that sprouted up over 1600 years AFTER Jesus ascended to heaven. My Church has been here since he founded it (Matt. 16:17-19).
As for praying to saints for intercession, aren’t we told over an over in the epistles to pray for one another? (1 Thess. 5:25, 1 Tim. 2:1-4, James 5:13-16, 1 John 5:16)
We are FLAWED
human beings and yet we pray for one another. How much more profitable would it be for someone in heaven to pray for me? (James 5:16)
You might believe that those in heaven are dead, but you couldn’t be more wrong. They are MORE alive than you or me and they have been made perfect in the Lord.
Remember, Kujo - it’s not about a warm & fuzzy feeling - it’s about Jesus. He didn’t base his Church on a “feeling”.

To MariaG,
I am sorry I did not go into detail in my post about the struggles I am having as they are very personal & I was trying to be brief. Wanted to clarify a couple things. I never left the Church even during my struggles. Also, after learning about the Catholic Church & all her teachings I believe that it is the one true Church started by Christ Himself & that it holds the fullness of the truth. My husband left the Church in his teens in search of the truth & it led him right back to the Catholic Church. He did alot of reasearch, especially historical & is currently schooling for his degree in Theology. I have learned alot on my own & through my husband as well. My faithfullness or lack of, lies moreso with me & my circumstances rather than the Church. I think it stems from my human nature of course but I do believe Satan puts doubts in your head when he sees an opening & tries to hold onto you. Several saints have went through similar situations, St. Therese, St. Rita, etc. I was never raised knowing about God but it was by God’s grace that He still made Himself known to me & led me to my husband & then the Catholic Church. All my life Satan has been linguring & waiting for me is what I believe. May sound stupid to you, but it is the truth. And the closer I become to God, the stronger Satan tries to lead me away. It’s hard for me to explain but it is the truth. It’s me that is standing in my own way & not the Catholic Church as I have no doubt about the Church. Maybe I will explain more in detail sometime. Gotta fix dinner for my family now.

God bless all of you!
BlessedMama

First, I got saved at the Black Horse Chapel, Fort Hood, Texas in 1986.

Second, I don’t mind asking others to pray for me and i pray for people, too. I simply cannot believe that Mary would come back and give instruction for the “church” when Jesus did that while He was here.
You see thousands of people rushing to see an office window because a smear looks like Mary. Others longed to see a grilled cheese sandwich. Actually, I think it’s a demon behind it just trying to make the “church” look stupid… and it’s working.
In Scripture, we’re taught all we need to know in order to get back with God and we’re shown that the disciples did and what they wrote.
What is not in Scripture that hesitates your Salvation? If it’s enough, that’s all we need to have. If not, what?

Does it matter to ANYBODY’S Salvation wether or not Mary remained a virgin? Or what DID happen to Joseph? Or where or how the disciples died?

The only thing that really matters is: is Jesus your Judge or your Savior? You pick how you want to worship Him, but don’t tell me that I’m wrong because I’m following Jesus and not a group of people who claim to the the “church”.

Aren’t you happy to read that God is a God of love! He loves you so much that He has your name on the palm of His hand. You was on His mind when Jesus died. He saw you before you was even born!
In His presence, the Word says, is FULLNESS of Joy! WHEN was the last time you had that much joy? You should be bouncy like Tigger and not like Eeyore.

God Bless you, brother!

This thread is so sad. I see people honestly seeking Christ and giving their explanations for a serious decision because they have been asked to do so by the OP. Then these people are being berated for that difficult decision. This is leading to what? More understanding? More unity? No, less of each.

Isn’t is just possible that some of the reasons people leave the Church is because they get hurt and find no healing but rather they find people that are more willing to rend the wound more and pour salt into it?

Can’t we just look at why people left and simply accept that is their reason without chastisement? Do you really think anyone will respond positively to that chastisement? I don’t. And by reading the re:re:re:’s here neither do the ones being chastised.

Where is this Christian unity I’ve heard rumored about ?

Woa! I had to stare at it for a minute because it looked so colorful and pretty.

Party’s over.

Rosary beads isn’t as old as the RCC. “Prayer beads” have been used by other religions for years before.
PJII also gave his decision on evolution.

Nuff said.

The “traditions” of the Apostles that I use are what was written in the New Testament and in Acts. THAT’S “Apostolic tradition”, NOT what THEIR followers said or did. The RCC claims that it put the Bible together yet it failed to include Jame’s claim that Mary’s tomb was empty. Why? It doesn’t matter just the same as if she remained a virgin or not. THAT’S your “traditions of men”.

Old testament tradition (and Peter wanted to build one, too) of altars. Have one in your home? I do. If they can make an altar out of a pile of rocks, I can use my bed.

“eye”, “heart”… good one. Bible also mentions a sacrificial lamb without spot or wrinkle. Note that it doesn’t say anything about the lamb’s mother… nothing. Yet, at the top of this very page is proof that your own “heart” is led astray. My heart is on the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Is yours? Or should I be asking your mother instead?

“flesh” and “blood”. Key word: “rememberance”. It’s to REMEMBER that Jesus died and that HIS BLOOD was spilt as God’s sacrificial Lamb. Pump your stomach on Sunday night and you’ll find a wafer and some juice.

The “Church” was born at Pentecost: gathered in one accord to worship. The Holy Spirit fell upon all of them and they preached the Gospel. Some praised the Lord in a language that they didn’t speak. Peter then gave the first sermon of the Church.

The Church is Pentecostal.

Paul calls us ALL “saints”. Nobody has to be voted for or die first. We’re told not to consult the dead nor to make any graven images of things in Heaven. Also, when Jesus comes back to meet us in the clouds (rapture), the dead in Christ shall rise first. Was Peter and Paul “flawed” while walking this planet? (all have sinned)

I feel warm and fuzzy. But I also feel sorrowful and repentant when I sin. (we are FLAWED) Fortunately, MY God, Jesus, when He said to forgive others “70 times 7 times”, He’d follow that Himself.
It’s not how many times this flawed being falls, it’s how many times I get up.

Your religion and denomination has “warm and fuzzy feelings” too. That’s why they argue “HOW can Jesus come from an imperfect womb?” (mom = “warm and fuzzy”) That tangent should never exist.

**Can you tell me when and where it says NOT to consult or ask for intercession from the dead? The Old Testament speaks of “calling up the dead” and “seeking mediums” being evil - not of praying for and asking for prayer from those who have gone before us. **(Deuteronomy 18:9, Leviticus 19:31, Leviticus 20:6, 1 Chronicles 10:13)
On the contrary - I cited several New Testament passages that enocourage intercession for each other that you have failed to address.
The problem with people like you is that you refuse to believe in the promises of Jesus by insisting that those who have died in Christ are DEAD. Like I told you before - they are MORE ALIVE than YOU or ME. Hebrews 12:1 assures us that we are surrounded by “a cloud of witnesses” and Revelation 8:1-5 reminds us of the prayers of the saints being poured out before God. Gee - doesn’t sound like a bunch of dead people to me.
What spiritual pride must one have to call these holy ones of God, “dead people”?
The bottom line is that you left the Church because you didn’t know her - not because you weren’t being fed.
You have a responsibility to the truth - you must seek it. (Matt 6:33)

😦

No.

Its not for me anyway. Have you ever checked out Scriptural Rosary?

I will get you more info tomorrow.

I just put your family on my Rosary list, and now I see this.:o

The ultimate disagreement between us lies here: You believe that the RC is was and always will be the real church of Christ. I believe that it was many years ago before the Reformation. I believe that many have been led out of the RC by the Holy Spirit including myself.
And where have they been led? To a couple of thousand different prodestent sects? To athism? To Islam? To Hindu? So which of these are the right one?

Oh not… you misunderstood why I asked the question… and that’s my fault for the way I asked the questions. 😊 sorry…

I know what the Rosary is and say it myself. I want to hear kujo313 explain it because he/she said (or implied) that it was just repeating the Hail Mary over and over.

Thanks for putting my family on your Rosary list… that’s sweet of you.

Glad we are still

I knew your denomination but not the Church so I left it. I once was lost but now I’m found. The RCC DID feed me… little bit of cancer with the food. People throughout your religion’s “history” added “traditions” that is not good for the Body.

I seeked the Truth. Diligently searched for Him. I asked like He told me to. I seeked and I knocked.

Found Him. Truly Him. Biblically based so I KNOW it’s Him. Not some “oral tradition” that cannot be proved or that can be “watered down”.

On each of the adjacent ten small beads (also refered to as a decade) recite a Hail Mary while reflecting on the mystery.

“The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, wheter temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families…that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.”

Sister Lucia dos Santos

Not only did you prove that you’re ignorant, but your whole denomination belittled our Lord and His Work.
Shall I post more “doctrine of demons”, or “traditions of men (woman)”?

Even if I proved my point to your standards you wouldn’t listen anyway.
