I’m not sure if this is the right forum; so if it needs to be moved I understand.

Why do anti-abortion signs have to be so graphic?

My children had no school today, so I took them to see their Grandpa who in the hospital recovering from surgery. (My kids are 4 and 5).

While leaving the hospital there were anti-abortion picketer with signs saying abortion kills. They even had blown up images of post-aborted babies. The images were enough to make me turn away, seeing a child dismembered is awful. My children wanted to know why those babies were “cut up”.

So I had to have the “talk” with my 4 and 5 year-old, a talk that I didn’t really want with them, not at this time. Seeing they are only 4 and 5. They themselves are just children and should have the right to some innocents. (At least that is my opinion).

Well I started to think about it. I understand why they the anti-abortion picketers are there. I understand what abortion does. I understand why it is important to get the message out there. Abortion kills an innocent child.

However, what about the innocents of the children that see these signs? Should they be forced to see such graphic images? Should parents be forced to explain such things to their kids?

Modern technology is wonderful.
There are wonderful 4D ultrasound pictures that show babies ALIVE in the womb.
This link will allow you to see some 4D ultrasound pictures: prolifeamerica.com/4D-Ultrasound-pictures/index.cfm?photo=10#photos

I think that these anti-abortion picketers should do away with their post-abortion images, and use pre-abortion images such as these 4D ultrasound pictures.

I think they should blow up a few of these images and have messages like:

I’m ALIVE in my mother’s womb….
{Image of 4D ultrasound}
….If she aborts me, I will die.
ABORTION KILLS! THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS!
FOR HELP CALL: xxx-xxx-xxxx or ON the web: -------------------

It gets the same message across without destroying the innocent of children.
Abortion does kill and destroy an innocent life. However, why destroy the innocents of other children? Shouldn’t we protecting ALL children?

Now if my kids saw a 4D ultrasound picture, I could just tell them that a picture of baby inside the mommy’s tummy. Those people are holding those signs because some people don’t think that babies are ALIVE when they are in a mommy tummy, but we know they are. It’s good to let people know that babies are ALIVE when they are in the mommy’s tummy. That would have been much nicer to tell my kids.

However do to the graphic image this morning I’m left explaining why those babies were all “cut up.”

 My children innocents were destroyed this morning.

There is no ideal way to respond to evil, which is one of the reasons why it is evil.

There is no ideal way to respond to women presenting themselves for abortions. Jesus Himself could probably have made them aware of their sinfulness as well as His love for them, and taked them out of going into the clinic. Fallible everyday protestors can’t achieve this, and simply do the best that they can, in this case hoping that a presentation of the graphic reality of abortion will persuade people that if the images are too disgusting to be seen, then the operation is too disgusting to perform.

Yes, it is sad that our children must face the horror of abortion. That said, some of the children seeing the signs might have very well ended up like the babies on that sign if it weren’t for signs like that! That horror far outways us having to tell our children about the horrible fact of abortion.

Besides that, children have a knowledge of right and wrong that sometime surpasses adults (many times unfortunately). If you catch children at a young age and tell them what is evil and what is not, they have a better chance of having that mentality survive in a world that says it’s just fine to kill babies.

I have 6 children and the first 3 are born activists. They’d love to go picketing. They love going to the Walk for Life every year. They understand the horror of abortion and want to stop it. While it could happen, I don’t worry about some college professor changning their minds on this one. While everyone has to do what they think is best for their children, I’m here to tell you that a bad situation can still turn out very positively.

I understand! It’s just in my opinion there are better ways of doing it. The big poster board picture could have been a picture of a baby in the womb, and they could of handed out pamphlets with post-aborted pictures in them.

On the cover of the pamphlet there could be a warning stating that the images inside are graphic and may not be suitable for young children.

That way the children are not directly exposed to these graphic images… their innocents do not have to be destroyed just to get the message out there. In my opinion of course.

👋** I agree with you.** This message needs to get out in a positive loving way. The negative is not working and could even be causing harm.
Like you I realized this when pro life friends, without asking my permission showed a lot of these graphic photoes to my daughter at a very young age. I was furious. I also found these folks aggressive in there response and aggressive in their approach.
Reverance for life needs to be taught. There are many ways to do this, creative folks out there to do it and it can be done in a beautiful way and continuously shown on TV.

Yes, I want and do teach my kids the importance of life. However, I don’t think I need to use graphic images to do it. (Not at this young age). My kids know that it’s wrong to kill someone and that guns are bad. However, I would not expose them to a bloody crime scene.

Why should my children, at this young age, be exposed to these graphic post-abortion images?

I’m witchyoo. Just exactly because of what happened to you. You never know when a 5-year-old will be walking past your protest line.

No signs with dismembered babies. Show the real thing, living and beautiful.

Now, if only the wider culture could be as careful to keep pornography out of the public eye.

I agree that educating the public about the humanity of fetuses is a much more positive and productive approach.

Let me share, however, one exchange I witnessed while standing with some abortion opponents who were carrying graphic posters.

Two young men drove up to us, and by the tone of their conversation it seemed obvious that they were prochoice. They were incredulous. “They only abort blobs of tissue. They don’t abort fetuses that late in the pregancy!” they protested. “It would be against the law!”

The graphic posters showed otherwise. Most abortions are committed against fully recognizable human beings. That day a little doubt was implanted in the minds of two men who didn’t previously know what an abortion actually was.

Although I think pictures of beautifully formed babies in the womb is the better approach, I’m not ready to completely give up on graphic images. Newspapers, magazines, television and even college and high school campuses have denied us the forum to effectively educate the public about the true horrors of abortion. The only forum left is the street. I wish I weren’t so, but that’s what we’re dealing with.

I agree with your words…

I also add that sometimes, (not always), it takes the reality, the slap in the face so to speak, horrible imagery to remind us exactly who we are dealing with at the end of the day in cases like abortion !!! Satan…period…

Sometimes, his actions and what they really are about, need to be made known so that he can be exposed for what he really is…

It’s hard sometimes, and I’m not saying in all cases, to paint a rosey or loving picture of satan and his works and getting the message across in an effective manner…

Sometimes we need that jolt of reality…As Catholics, especially in our churches and prayer life, we are constantly reminded of various things through imagery…I would imagine that Satan would prefer for us to not reveal him in a manner which drives home what he really is…

**Out of sight - Out of mind **does come into play sometimes…IMHO, many times, some of us put Satan and his evil works away in the closet unseen for the ugliness that it is, rather than exposing him and his works in the open for us all to see what he REALLY is…

Please remember to pray for these victims of abortion

Maybe God is calling you to start a new anti-abortion campaign that makes sense to you. Answer the call!

I’m not saying that the post-abortion picture can’t be used. I’m just suggesting, what I think, would be a better format. The protesters could hand out pamphlets that had the post-abortion pictures IN them.

The outside of the pamphlet can have a warning: Images inside this pamphlet are graphic and may not be suitable for young children.

Again, I know the message needs to be out there, I just think there has to be a better way. I’m not suggesting to hide it or to sugar coat it. I just believe that ALL children should be protected. I don’t think it right to expose young children to the graphic images of post-aborted babies.

That’s why I think a big poster of a living baby in the womb would be better. That’s why I think that handing out pamphlets with a warning about the images inside would be better.

😃 Maybe He is…. However, I don’t have a clue where to start.
I also don’t know if I’m ready to answer the “call”. Lord help me!

Raising your children to be prolife is a great start. If you can balance that with an active prolife ministry, go for it! You have my prayers.

Like I said, I wouldn’t dare to tell somebody what’s best for their children.

That said, I can tell you from years of pro-life work that more than half of the time you cannot be in a position to give someone a pamplet and, if you do, much of the time it’s tossed before people look at it. People must realize that there are actually laws to prevent us from giving people these pamphlets. They’re called bubble laws. Basically, we were having too much success.

The people who use graphic signs don’t just use them to make a point, they use then to stop a child from being murdered. I think it’s sad that we have to resort to such tactics in the first place but desperate times call from desperate measures and I’m willing to sacrifice my children being horrified about these pictures to stop a baby from being killed. It’s important to remember that this is not just about getting a message across. Unfortunately we are the only ones who will speak up from the babies who are in those pictures. For my children, fighting the devil, and this is what we’re doing has never been a bad thing. I’m not advocating whipping out a picture just to show them. In the context of trying to persuade people to not have an abortion, our children seeing these pictures has not had a negative effect.

Historically, graphic pictures have always moved people. The consentration camp victims is one such example Yes, again, it’s sad that it takes this to move people but these pictures have been shown to be quite effective. Unfortunately to do good, it’s not always possible to keep our children in a bubble.

Here’s some good articles on this debate.

priestsforlife.org/images/post-abortion-healing.htm
priestsforlife.org/articles/shouldweuse.htm
priestsforlife.org/articles/graphicimages.html

Here’s also an article on people’s responses to the graphic pictures.
priestsforlife.org/resources/abortionimages/graphicspraise1.htm

Priests for Life has several articles on this issue which do not attack people on either site of the issue.

It’s important to remember that we are not all called to the same tactics. I certainly don’t fault people who don’t want to use this tactic.

I know around here, protester hand out stuff all the time. So I don’t know if that is a local law about not handing, or if the protesters here are breaking the law. I just know they hand stuff out.

It is sad! Maybe we just have radical protester here, because not only do they hold up theses signs but also they shout out things like “You are going to hell if you support abortion”; “If you had an abortion you are going to hell”. How is that going to help a woman who feels that she has “no choice”.

I’ve read a lot of web-sites such as priestforlive.org; I’ve listen to Fr. Pavone speak via radio and T.V. Many of these women are there because they “feel” they have NO choice. How is yelling at them and telling them they are going to hell helping them? That is what the protester around here do, they yell at these women and tell them they are going to go to hell.

I believe a big poster with A LIVING baby in the womb could do wonders. A big poster picture of a Living baby in the womb and the words: I’m 10 week-old and I’m ALIVE Mom, don’t kill me! Abortion is not the answer, there are other options: then having the phone number and web address to organization like: optionline.org/index.html on the poster too.

That way these women would know where to go for help!

I just see images like this one: priestsforlife.org/resources/abortionimages/fig20baby7.jpg of a 7 week-old fetus and think why aren’t the picketers holding huges signs like this one.

Pictures like the above could be used with words like:
I’m 7 weeks old Mom and I am living in your womb. Don’t kill me! Abortion is not the answer! For help call: xxx-xxx-xxxx

In most states you have bubble laws around the clinics.

All things have to be done in a loving manner. This is not it. That said, most who hold up graphic signs don’t say such things. The incidents you are describing are like the people who protest against homosexuals who yell things like “God hates gays!”. They’re are wackos in all groups.
Well I have never seen an anti-abortion protester not yell those things. That is all I’ve seen around my parts. Are the signs and the protester yelling things like your going to hell. They don’t even tell the woman were to go for help…they just yell at them and tell them they are going to hell.
I’m not discounting that this has it’s place to. As a matter of fact, I think that the graphic signs are best when juxtaposed with a baby in the womb. Kind of a “this is what you have now and this is what it will look like when you are done”.
I’m sure images like that would work too. There are so many post-abortion pictures out there. I guess my problem is with the ones that show the baby dismembered.

I can see posters with things like I’m ALIVE and showing a picture of a baby in the womb: priestsforlife.org/resources/abortionimages/fig20baby7.jpg but sadly this baby IS NOT: priestsforlife.org/resources/monica/m85.htm
Abortion kills! There are options you don’t have to kill your baby! For help call:xxx-xxx-xxxx

Well, I’ve been involved in pro-life activities for 21 years since I was 16 and the majority of the people I’ve seen do not yell “You’re going to hell!” I have seen a few wackos. In fact, in my years with Operation Rescue, we actually removed people that yelled things like this. It didn’t happen more than once or twice the entire time.
