Not necessarily. An atheist can spend quite a bit of time studying religion as a purely cultural phenomenon, and plenty of nontheistic academics do precisely this.What I tried to express is that it would be evident to me and it was not to the professor, that someone who devoted as my time and effort as I was devoting in learning about God - believes in God.
While it might be true that a greater number of theists might be attracted to such a field, it’s not the case that someone who studies the field is necessarily a believer.
