I’ve been Catholic and I’ve been Baptist. Sadly, there is much ignorance and bashing on both sides. I’ve experienced it in both camps.
I agree Priscilla that makes us both not very good examples for either of our faiths doesn’t it. But we are human, and unfortunatly we do have sin:blush:

But we can only pray that the Holy Spirit can over come our pride and work through us more than not;)

I think, though the Catholic Church and the Mormon Church get the most bashing.

Then there is the residue of the fall out from the Reformation.

Amen! We can agree on that!

I was a Southern Baptist for two and a half years. Every Sunday, after service I attended a Southern Baptist Bible Study led by the Deacon of my Baptist Church. Everyone in the Bible Study said that they were all former Roman Catholics. The first thirty minutes of the hour and a half Bible study was spent by Southern Baptist bashing Roman Catholics. They would say things like “Isn’t that just like a Catholic”. While I was there I would ask the members of the Bible study simple questions about their former Roman Catholic beliefs. I found my fellow Southern Baptist to be totally ignorant about Roman Catholic beliefs, history, and customs. I also found that many Protestants fain a Roman Catholic history just so that they can gain brownie points in the church. During my two and a half years as a Southern Baptist I constantly asked the Deacon in our Bible Study to quote the verses that show that Southern Baptist beliefs are found in the King James Bible. The Deacon of my Southern Baptist Church never gave me a single verse from my King James. When I started asking Bible questions I was treated as an outcast, and was eventually excommunicated from my Southern Baptist Church. I have found that everyone in a Southern Baptist Church from the preacher on down is ignorant of Gods holy word.

You need to back up this statement. I’ve never seen anything to back up the idea that baptism was copied from pagans. They copied it from Catholics. Catholics got it from the Jews.

OK here are the facts that date pre christian times… Rome used to have the religion of mitrha which also practiced baby blessings/naming

Please know your history! it is very important to know facts! To know how pagans prayed you can than understand

In a final note do not confuse the idea of true biblical baptism how Christ was immersed in water with the sprinkling of water on a new born baby to be offered/blessed to a god… it is the later that i am referring too…

actually andrew, i have had even protestant ministers agree with me, that what moses did was a baptism of sorts. and immersion was not practiced by the first annabaptist. i was married to a mennonite, and they pour. i will let someone else adress your comments about the Catholic Church killing people for having a bible. and again. what is your denominational affiliation. this would help in our discussion. peace 🙂

Interesting statement however there was no substance in your statement. Sorry.
For one please make us understand what catholic bashing involved in the questionable SBC, giving examples… i think its only fair when you accuse someone of something…no?

And I’ll guess that whatever camp you’re in right now there is persecution as well. Where can one go??

Andrewv33, isn’t it funny how the Jehovah’s Witnesses will tell you that the Trinity is pagan, the immortality of the soul is pagan, hell fire is pagan, Christmas is pagan, birthdays are pagan and so on and so on. Then there are those who climb the pagan steps and say that those are not but such and such is. It seems to me that any practice can be found in paganism if researched. So what does that really say?

Pagans prayed so does that mean that prayer is pagan? Of course not. So instead of immediately pulling out the pagan card why doesn’t one research the writings from the very Church that is being opposed? Obviously all anti-Catholic sources are going to support biased claims on such and such being a pagan practice. If one researches they will find the notion of a resurrection as pagan.

Please open your mind and heart and be fair to yourself. To throw out the “this is pagan and that is pagan” is to merely fill an unexplored void with ignorance. Pagans believed in false gods does that make believing in God pagan? Where do we draw the line?

Incidentally, your religious affliliation states, “the Bible”. Where in the bible is the term “Bible”? Does that word stem from a tradition of men? If not where did that term originate? I’m always willing to learn… teachccd

You fit perfectly into the saying of having just enough information to be dangerous.

You should read up more about mithra from sources other than pagan sites. While the worship of mithra was around before the time of Christ, the practices that resemble Christian practices were taken from Christianity. Before the time of Christ, their practices were completely different.

I doubt Finnish paganism was influential in any way to Christianity which was centered around the Mediteranean. Also, you need to find some sources outside pagan websites.

And you are flat wrong infant baptism appearing in the 2nd century. You’ve been given several examples of whole households being baptized in Scripture.

Ok
Not the bible! it cannot be found anywhere…
Do you read history?
Then if you do you can search and find out that this practice was used by pagans ONLY… and was adopted by catholics & orthodox…

I hope i answered your question.

The Bible reader!

You should re-read your Bible.
First thing, you are flat wrong in your statement that Catholics believe man has more authority than the Bible. You are wildly ignorant of Catholic teaching, and should educate yourself. And I’d also like you to explain how you know the Bible is the Word of God? How was it compiled? Who compiled it? Who wrote the book of Mark? Who divided it into chapters and verses?
My encounter with most non-Catholics is they possess very knowledge on the background of scripture.
There are several examples in the Bible of whole families being baptized. Families consisted of babies and toddlers. There is no example of babies being denied baptism, nor anyone forbidding it. Jesus said to bring the children to Him.
You should read up on the early church fathers and the first Christians. They give explicit instructions on how to baptize, and who to baptize, and they encouraged and taught infant baptism. Several mention their baptisms when they were infants.
Exactly! Those who oppose infant baptims will tell me:

Well prove in those verses the term ‘household’ included infants?

On the contrary, prove where the Jews excluded infants from the household or did not consider them as part of the household?
One final thing, do you understand what a covenant is? It is more than a contract, more than an adoption, more than a joining, it is the giving and receiving and joining of someone into a family and the acceptance of the rights and responsibilites of being a member of the family. Now, can you tell me what was the initiation process of an Israelite male into the Old Covenant? I’ll give you a hint, it involves 8 day old infants. The idea of adult-only baptisms would have been absolutely ridiculous to the Apostles and first century Christians. Only in the lat century with the dramatic falling of the infant mortality rate would it have even been dreamed of. Infants were always part of the family and heirs and part of the covenant. (P.s. you do know that the word testament means covenant right? The whole Bible is centered around the Old and New Covenants.)
True. Many will say: Yes but the first people baptized were adults. Correct, because logically the first converts were adults;hence there was not any cradle Christians at first.👍

i’m baptist (from the south, but my particular church very different from the “southern baptist” institution), a lot of my family and riends are catholic, so i’ve always been raised to respect catholics and their teachings. we don’t believe in infant baptism because we believe the boy/girl needs to be of an accountable age to understand the sins and redemption and make the adult decision to be a part of the church. we also don’t believe in mandatory works to get to heaven after you are saved. once you have accepted God’s grace and Jesus’ redemption from your sins, you cannot lose your salvation. this doesn’t mean we don’t think we should stop acting like a Christian as soon as we’re “in.” i enjoy service and charity, though i wish my church family did more. we (i mean the baptists, not me specifically) have issues with praying to mary and to saints as we belive we should only pray to Jesus/God. but having read a lot of posts about it, i think i have a better understanding why catholics pray to mary. (correct me if i’m wrong, this is just what i’ve gotten from here) you pray to mary to intercede on your behalf, right? much like you would ask a friend to pray for you, which baptists certainly know how to do! we’re very big on community prayer and praying for one another, so i think we just get caught up thinking Catholics place mary above jesus or God by praying to her first.
i know a lot of baptists dislike the Catholic services because of the traditions, the rituals, and the antiquity of it all. our churches are much more low key, not decorated to such extent, and certainly no statues of the Virgin.
now, as a baptist, i don’t understand the process of the rosary. could someone explain that for me? please?
i hope i’ve helped explain some of your worries about baptists! i’m lucky enough to have been raised in a baptist family that is very accepting of other faiths, so hopefully this helps!

  1. Catholics do not sprinkle, but pour or immerse. And that is how the early church says they baptized in the Didache (see chapter 7) which dates from the time of the New Testament. That is also where you get the doxology in your own rendition of the Our Father… The only translation that enters that into the text of the prayer is the King James Bible and that is apparently due to a copyist error. (See chapter 8)
  2. Apparently the apostles would disagree with you since St. Polycarp, who was a disciple and friend of St. John the apostle was baptized as an infant, and made that point quite plain at his trial before the proconsul. (See chapter 9 of The Martyrdom of Polycarp)
3, Are you married? Is your pastor? Do either of you wear a wedding ring? Do you know that that is a carry over from paganism? MARRIAGE and the WEDDING RING

Thanks for sharing. At least you are accepting and tolerant of others faiths. I do not agree with a lot of what Baptists teach, but I have to respect their beliefs.

As for the rosary?

Already dealt with in another post, but I would ask where that “age of accountability” is found in the Word of God, and as has often been pointed out, whole households were baptized together in the New Testament, which certainly implies the inclusion of infants and young children. The Case For Infant Baptism

We would disagree on very scriptural evidence to the contrary, most especially Matthew 25:31-46 and James 2:14-26 for example.

Thank God for that. It is refreshing to meet you and I look forward to more fellowship and discussion.

Gee, never seen Baptist Board have you.

LOL,

I have OCD/scrupuolosity and read some of the stuff on that Baptist forum and i laughed sooo hard LOL

u gotta be kidding me…

Brother Percy from those forums says “God hates scotland, burn in hell scottish” etc LOL

yea sounds really Godly.

In general I have nothing against protestants as I used to be protestant myself before…but they are crazy protestants…might as well group them with the Amish 😃

as for the infant baptism vs. adult baptism, i checked out my church’s articles of faith and every example of scripture they cited explaining the practice of adult baptism is an example of adults being baptized in the Bible. just a few examples i found:
matt 3:6; acts 2:38 (here is where i can see where catholics may find the baptism of a person essential to their salvation/admittance into heaven, but again, its adults being baptized because of the order to “repent” as an infant lacks the ability to understand and repent of sins); Acts 8:12 (women and men baptized, no children mentioned, but that of course doesn’t exclude the possibility that perhaps children just weren’t present at the time. but the “they believed” seems to be an essential pre-requisite to baptism that infants are incapable of.)

please don’t take any offense to any of this, i was just trying to answer some questions. all for the sake of exploring and examining the Bible and different faiths. and i’m by no means saying this is the correct interpretation, or that your interpretation of these or other verses is wrong. i’m not very well versed in the specific beliefs of the catholic church, so i’d love to find out more and the scripture that you base your beliefs on, if that’s possible?
thank you for your help!

Here’s a good site w/ free downloads that gives some 101 type Catholic apologetics.
biblechristiansociety.com/download

And here’s one of his downloads about baptism: biblechristiansociety.com/account/download?return=%2Fdownload%2Fmp3%2Finfant_baptism_and_original_sin.mp3

This man generally sticks with apologetics from the bible since he knows Protestants don’t care what the catechism or the pope or sacred tradition have to say about anything.

He even has what I would call a Baptist “style” about him.

Best wishes to you.

It’s funny you mention the amish but you forget that we have many religious orders that take a vow of poverty, which may seem crazy to outsiders too.
