Why is it that so many of the responders here are giving as reasons such things as laziness, ignorance, pride, arrogance, etc., etc.? If it were my club, and that is what I thought of those people, I’d say “good riddance, to hell with you,” and be glad that they are no longer polluting the alleged one, holy, etc. Church. But how naive is that? Everyone??? In all cases?
I would never say “to hell with you” especially in regards to my own adult children. Why did I give the answers that I did? Because I have spoken with my adult children and I have listened to their words and I have seen the pattern- and it breaks my heart. But I will never give up on them. And I will always pray for their return.

You’re right Zeb, I would likely not put it that strongly. But having adult children, one faithfully Catholic and the other not, I have to say it is not their religion that makes them what they are. I pray that they each do what is most advantageous for their best spiritual interest, and lay no claims to knowing for them what that might be. I only ahswer whatever I can to the best of my abitlity, and say “I don’t know” if I don’t. I would also feel dishonest, though, if I encouraged tehm to accept the way of a single Church without very significant study, and especially include oposing viewpoints. I’m convinced that they have a brain and a heart for a reason. so far they have been exemplary in all their ways, something I neither attribute to their religion or lack of itn nor do I argue against their religion. I only always argue for critical thinking, and hope that if intuition functions, it is interpreted correctly.
