Sorry, but that is dead wrong. Here’s some articles about that from the CA online library.
CATHOLICS AND THE BIBLE (This Rock: September 1997)
PART II. ARE CATHOLICS ALLOWED TO READ THE BIBLE ? (This Rock

That last article predates Vatican II by about 40 years. Why ever would anyone believe that the Church forbid the reading of the Bible, when in fact they attach a plenary indulgence to it?
👍👍
CM is right (as he so often is:)). I have a Catholic Bible that was printed in the 19th Century, and it has that plenary indulgence explained right in the front of it.
The;) last time I checked, that was way, way, before Vatican 2.
The Bible was given to me by a lovely elderly Wesleyan Methodist lady who found it in her house when she moved in, and said that she remembered me as “someone who loves to read all different Bible translations, so I set it aside especially for you”.
[And let me say, that it had been well-read over the years!! I know the look of a loved & used Bible, & this was one].

Though I am a pretty fierce defender of the Catholic faith (I guess). It has never been my goal or interest to be rude or offensive to n-Cs posting here (or anywhere else for that matter) though I will be forthright in what I lay out and I am not kind to polemics and a-C rhetoric. I don’t think they offer anything (from either position) that helps the discussion or debate.

Open minded and honest charitable discussion and debate is great and most times both sides come away enriched, but “the intarweb” (My son’s joking term for it) is most often fraught with much less than either rationality or charity and that makes for madness.

Personally I have faced some vociferous individuals and even groups who have been in a near shark frenzy mode and seem to take great offense that a Catholic like me would have the audacity to defend the ______________ (Fill in the polemical blanks here). I have a whole e-mail archive of “fun stuff” some of these folks have said to me. 🤷 I pray I never descend to their level.

I DO hope that our OP here has at least taken the time to read her own thread and test it all to see what is true and what is not, remembering that Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself said, I am…the truth…" (John 14:6)

What Did Our Lord say in the Bible," I will build My Chruch" He did not say I will build my Churchs. Church is ONE and churchs is more then one.

Catholics do not minimize Christ. They maxamize Him. I was an evangelical christian for over 70 years. Then at age 73 I became catholic. Why? Because Christ is more evident in the catholic church than he ever was in all the churches I ever attended. The entire mass is all about Christ!! Christ is the c enter of all of our devotion and praise. The Gospel is read and preached at every mass. In a lot of protestant churches you hear more of what St. Paul said than what Jesus tought…I praise God and the Holy Spirit for leading me to the fullness of the Truth.
ALLELUIA!👍🙂 Carlan

If you couldn’t tell, I was being quite facetious on that last note. You’ll notice I talked about giving an intellectual and theological (not physical) smack-down. In terms of an ‘intellectual smack-down of siblings’, read St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians. He certainly gives the Galatian Judaizers a theological smack-down to use my turn of phrase.
I know you were kidding nsper, but when you said “A lot of Protestants here behave like guerrillas” I think it goes both ways. There are some Catholics in here with “militant Catholic” next to their name and “harcore informed Catholic on fire” blah blah blah and these folks are just itchin’ to pick a fight and make Protestants sound like a bunch of ill-informed hillbillies with no sense of history who just bible-thump brainlessly. It gets on my nerves. When I hear “smack-down” whether intellectually or not, I’m just burned out. To be frank with you, I went back to the Catholic Church from my Anglican parish back in 2002 and recently my wife and I have been back to the Anglican parish that we left. There are plenty of disagreements that I’m struggling with in Catholicism and truthfully—Catholic Answers Forums and the militant hardcore excessive apologetics, bullying, and nasty rhetoric has only turned me off from Catholicism and made me go the other way. With the exception of a few folks, most are just combative and in the mood to fight and argue rather than preach the Good News of Christ Resurrected or be online missionaries. Apologetics warriors are not the same as missionaries for Christ. I’m burned out on this stuff…But I do know you were being facetious, not literal LOL…😛

While I’m on the fence about the Catholic church, or Orthodoxy, the Catholic Church DOES NOT MINIMIZE Christ!!! If anything, it’s just the opposite of that. While some Catholics may appear to minimize Christ, it is not the teaching of the Catholic Church. A good reference point for the OP would be to read Catholicism for Dummies. Many of my non-catholic friends (and Catholic ones also) have read it, and were amazed at what they thought verses what is taught. Cleared up many misconceptions for them, as for me also in my journey to understand what the different faiths of Christianity teach. Good luck in your journey to understand the christian faith fuller!!. May God bless you!!!🙂

Goodness me Gurney(‘Teach’:)I didn’t know you felt that way.I do know many at Catholic answers, C’s and P’s both,🙂 tend to get off their bikes at times, with fisty cuffs ready. But leave and go back, how could you do it, surely not for that reason.

BTW, I am a fairly well informed Catholic hillbilly living right in the middle of the ‘Bible Belt’ and I have not yet met a Protestant who qualifies as a brainless bible thumping hillbilly,
they are all quite lovely and loving and they quote the Bible very well,;)Carlan
