Why Do Mormons Use Kjv Of The Bible

Also the Apocrypha were in all Bibles until 1880.

I think I know why Mormons use the KJV. It’s because Joseph Smith’s Book of Mormon is written (sort of) in the style of KJV, and because he copied a bunch of passages out of KJV, to pad his book.

But my real question is, why don’t Mormons today, (since they have so many bright scholars) translate the Bible from the original sources, since they claim that no religion is correct, because the Church fell into apostasy in the early years, therefore the Bible translations can’t be correct. Unlike the golden plates, there are many, many historical scrolls of the Bible.
They sort of did. The KJV they use is not the KVJ you can buy any old place. In the 80’s they had a large project that, among other things, went through to cross reference the KJV to their other scriptures (including the JST) and added footnotes with Mormon interpretation of passages.

Because the Isaiah portions of the BoM are pretty much the same, with minor differences, to the KJV translation. So if the LDs were to switch its english speaking canon from the KJV, it’d have a problem with whether or not to update the language of the BoM. THis isn’t a problem wiht non English speaking MOrmons 9who use modern translations of the bible.
That’s interesting about the non-English speaking Mormons. They probably have no idea about the controversy of the language used in BOM being similar to KJV!! It’s probably easier to convert them.

That’s right. That project took like 20 years to add all those references and foot notes to the KJV. We believe in origional texts of the bible as the most accurate. We would be estactic if there was any origional writings of the apostles. But since there is none, the origional writings are lost to history. We can only rely on the various old translations of the bible. We use the KJV as the official book. Again, if anyone knows Latin they would be able to read earlier versions, which, assuming is more accurate or origional then the KJV.

Many other countries don’t even have the bible in their own language. I forget the name of the bible we used in the philippines. Only parts of it was written in Tagalog and the actual terms they used were very deep tagalog that many people didn’t know anymore.

they liked to use english scriptures and we would interpret into Tagalog the verse and explain it in Tagalog. Many people never even read the bible before and were very unfamiliar with any of it.

falis,

The earliest textual witnesses we have for the Bible are in Hebrew, Greek and a little ARamaic. Latin is in later manuscripts.

Ya, so if you know those languages than i think they will have more resources to read earlier versions of the bible. I think that’s great but i doubt i have the time to learn those languages just so i can read earlier bibles.

Well, it would be worthwhile to get a more modern translation, because they are more accurate than the KJV. The authors of the KJV didn’t have so many manuscripts to work with as scholars today do. That’s one way to get closer to the originals- get another translation of the Bible.

Our stance remains the same. We use one of the earliest English translations of the bible in existance. We know there are earlier translations written in Hebrew and Latin but we don’t want to translate it because we would probably to just as poor a job as other religions have done in the past.
Falisrm, your “logic” is faulty. Current translation capabilities are better. And, language changes. The English language of the KJV is NOT the language you are speaking today. In the KJV, words that we no longer use, or have evolved to a different understanding, no longer match up to the original Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic intent. Creating a difficult translation to the person reading.
Plus, its the same thing so many other churches have done. They always create their own version of the bible to fit their own doctrine and teachings. The KJV isnt perfect but its the closest one we have in english. If you happen to know Latin, more power to you.
Perhaps you believe we use the Latin Bible today? Some do, but I don’t speak or read Latin, so I use the New American Bible.
Personally, i was hoping the Codex Sinaiticus would be translated into English. I dont know why they don’t they don’t do it? I find it amazing.

Current translationss of the Bible are entirely from the oldest manuscripts available and considerable time was spent comparing manuscripts, in order to translate as close as possible to the corresponding English word, meaning and sense of what the originals were conveying.

These include the Masoretic and Sinaiticux texts compared to the scrolls found in the Qumrum caves.

New translations of the bible haven’t worked out well at all. The entire meanings change. Our current language does a poor job conveying messages in the bible. Whenever i try to read new translations, they sound so fake its rediculous.

And a modern translation of what? Which one is the most accurate? You can assume the older you go the more accurate it is but that could be completely untrue. If we chose to translate an older version of the bible, any number of them could have been poorly translated. I’m sure scholars have educated guesses but even if we did translate a bible,

It would just bring up the next big controversy that the church translated it according to their own understanding and desires.

I am not sure if you intend to connect the first sentence with the content of the rest of this paragraph, but just for your own reference, the Tagalog-speaking Filipinos have had their own Bible translation since 1905 (source), and according to Mormonwiki the first Mormon missionaries did not arrive in the Philippines until 1961.

We didn’t have a bible published by the LDS church. It was just published by some company. We handed them out whenever people asked but it was very few times that ever happened. The level of interest in the scriptures was very small at least in my experience.

falis,

Get a few of them. Get a parallel Bible. You don’t have to know the original languages to gain something from doing a little biblical criticism. No translation is going to be 100% accurate, but they’ll be a lot closer than the KJV. What you are saying is like, well, sure the modern translations are much better htan the KJV, but they aren’t perfect, so why bother? I’ll just keep to my poorer KJV.

Why do modern Bibles sound ‘fake’? That’s an odd observation. Is it because you are used to equating old english sounding language with ‘scripture’?

I know that Mormons use the King James Version of the Bible, but why? KJV is largely modeled after Luther’s Bible. If all other churches fell into apostasy at some point in time, why would Mormons use a basically English translation of the Lutheran Bible?
On top of that, the KJV was translated from the Latin Vulgate that is used by the Roman Catholic Church. That in itself, for Mormons and other KJV-onlyists, shows the irony of attacking “corrupted” Catholic scriptures while using a translation based on them lol.
😛

Nope, they used the bible translated by Martin Luther for the KJV.
You are both wrong. The KJV was translated from the original tongues by the King James’ scholars. It was neither done from the Luther’s German Bible nor from the Latin Vulgate. Being good scholar, they compared their own translations with those of others, in order to make sure it was as good and accurate as they could make it; but it was done from the original tongues, not from someone else’s.
Yes, I understand that it was the Bible that was widely used in America back then. However, today, the Mormons are always saying how many translations there are of the Bible, and how it could be wrong from the many translations, blah, blah.
We don’t say that. I don’t know where you got that from. We use the KJV because we think it is the best one available in English; but we don’t have anything against anyone making their own translations of the Bible. Some independent translations of the Bible (like the Jerusalem Bible for example, which is a Catholic translation) are also very good, and can help increase our understanding of the Bible.
Why don’t they go back to the original Bible and retranslate it themselves?
We don’t need to. We think the KJV is the best. Any translation we make (unless it is done by revelation) cannot improve on the KJV.
But my real question is, why don’t Mormons today, (since they have so many bright scholars) translate the Bible from the original sources, . . .
See above.
. . . since they claim that no religion is correct, because the Church fell into apostasy in the early years, therefore the Bible translations can’t be correct.
We don’t make such a claim. You are inventing things about us that we never claim. An Apostasy occurred, sure; but that does not mean that the KJV cannot be a good translation.
Unlike the golden plates, there are many, many historical scrolls of the Bible.
None of them are original though. They are all copies, of copies, of copies … that have been made over many generations.

I think its a joke how there are thousands of versions of the bible. Its the dumbest thing i have ever seen and your telling me its a good idea to add another one to the pile. Religious people are so dumb, it drives me insane. I was saying the modern translations are not perfect and they actually suck. I dont care what technology you use to translate them. The spiritual meanings and principles and doctrines aren’t conveyed as well. Every single verse i read i think. “Gosh, some moron things he’s smart and translated the bible for the thousanth’s time.”

I would rather put my trust in earlier translaters than some guy in a lab that think’s he’s doing everyone a service by translating the bible for the millionth time.

Falis,

Religious people are dumb? Here you are, you admit you don’t know anything about Greek or Hebrew, but those ‘religious people’, actually scholars of Greek and Hebrew translate the oldest manuscripts they can find anywhere, and it’s stupid? Are you kidding? They know more than you (and me) my friend. If you don’t trust one translation, get a parallel Bible which shows several translations at once, get one with scholarly notes and learn something about biblical criticism, because you need it.

Ya, i’m actually waiting for them to translate it. Why are they so bloody slow?

codex-sinaiticus.net/en/

And i’m talking about churches that choose to translate the bible. It’s always their projects to translate it, not some government agency or University.

The whole concept is a joke. I understand translating the bible into other languages or people to read but to rewrite it, it makes no sense at all. What if Paul was trying to explain a specific principle and used a word that made no sense like parables often do. Then a scholar translates that word and the entire meaning is completely changed or gone?
It happened so much already.

Here is a funny mistranslation in the Vulgate by Jerome. When Moses came down from seeing God, this translation said he had horns on his head. Michaelangelo made a famous statue of Moses with horns on his head. Later scholars found out that the word for horns meant his face shone.

In KJV there are a lot of references to unicorns, but actually it should be translated as wild oxen.

Why? Do you think language doesn’t change over time? How are different people of different cultures who speak different languages supposed to be able to read and understand the Bible if not via translation? Even a knowledge of ancient Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic would be problematic to a reader who otherwise had no background in the culture and customs of the time the books of the Bible were written.

Honestly, if you really don’t like the idea of many translations of the Bible, your best bet is to learn Latin and only read the Vulgate.

that’s nice. No wonder religion makes less and less sense as years go on. They come out with a different bible every year.
