Ok, so the conclusion is, we need to have 16 bibles in front of us and read 16 verses. oh wait, its the same verse. Then we need to compare each verse and then somehow make sure or figure out what the verse it teaching on our own. That is everyone’s proposal here?

What if we don’t have a computer? Does everyone need to go out and buy 16 different bibles?

I totally agree. There is very little difference between the content of the Bibles. A few weird word translations, but the spiritual content is very similar. Some Bibles are easier to read than others. Personally, I enjoy King James because it’s a lot like reading Shakespeare, but it’s much easier to read NIV or something else in modern English.

But whatever Bible you choose to read - READ IT. Because is is full of truth and history and poetry and wisdom. Unless you read it, you will never know how great the Bible is.
The Douay-Rheims is similar to reading Shakespeare, only I stay awake longer reading the Bible. 😉

Dude, some people do enjoy that kind of comparison. They find it helps their understanding and their spirituality. But if you don’t - then take the advice Rebecca gave you above, and stick with your KJV that you love. No one is telling you you’d be stupid to stick to one Bible; please give everyone else the same consideration.

Actually to be fair, one is Greek to English, one is Hebrew to English, one is Latin Vulgate, three are KJVersions, one Douay-Rheims, one modern day, one revised and two are Aramaic to English. It’s helps to cross reference exact words at times. 😉

The extras I rarely mess with as they are Greek, Hebrew and Greek to Hebrew.

Well, according to catholics, we are developing tradition here, based on our understanding of the bible. So i propose, as catholics, we use 16 bibles to read from because that is the most effective way to learn principles and doctrines of the gospel. Oh, and we will publish a new bible every year. So, by the time we are 90, we would add another dozen dozen bibles to the comparison.

falis,

That depends on how serious you are about learning about minute differences between versions. Good modern translations mostly agree with each other and any good modern translation will suffice for the average person. If you are someone who is goign to get deep with specific verses and really dig in, you may want to get a parallel Bible, one with several different translations side by side to see if they make a difference or not-- they may. If you need to go further than that, you should get a concordance. Depending on how scholarly you want to get, there are many options… and so it goes. It all depends on exactly how closely, and for what reason, you read the text.

No, tradition still comes from interpreting the doctrines and principles of the bible according to the knowledge of the priests and leaders of the Catholic church.
No, tradition is the word, and works taught by Jesus Christ. And as far as it being an interpretation of the priest etc. yes it is, but only through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. And incidently, no matter what version of the “million” out there, they ALL have dozens of references to the Trinity

actually i was only able to count less than 10 in reference to the trinity. but thats a different topic.

My answer to this question, since I am a member of almost 20 years of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is regardless of Luther’s version or etc, we believe to the Bible, relative to the original translation. It makes sense to understand the prophets who wrote the words, if you will, to understand what they actually said versus someone’s interpretation – what God wanted them to revela to us.

You are totally missing the point. You only need to read one version of the Bible. They are not that different. Just read it. It sounds like you don’t even read your KJV very often.

No, we already concluded we need to have 16 bibles because, according to the discussion, that is the most effective way to learn principles and doctrines from the bible. So its not good enough to read just one version. Oh, and we need to publish a new bible every year. I already got that recommendation.

There are lots more out there. I chose those I prefer for my study purposes. To be honest, 16 is overkill. I could do with probably 7 that I have loaded. If you’d like the info for the pc program and where to get the Bibles, I’d be glad to give you that info. I’m cheap and only go for the free stuff. 😉

ok, this is great. So there are recommendations to have 7. Since there are literally thousands of version around. We can make a list to see which one is most accurate to the least accurate. Then, according to how many you want to compare, that;s what you use to learn a specific doctrine or principle.

If scholars unearth new and better manuscripts, shouldn’t they add that knowledge to a new translation?? What if they learn more about how ancient people thought? More about ancient history? All of that goes into a good translation.

If you are reading the KJV, you are handicapping yourself for no reason (not that the KJV doesn’t have some purposes, I think it’s great for reading the psalms for hte poetic quality, but the rest? Get a better translation).

Why didn’t people make this recommendation to us before? This makes perfect sense. This is definately a good way to study the scriptures.

Nebula, i think your changing the subject cause if new Scripture is found like the dead sea scrolls, it only takes one translation to translate it.

They have the Dead Sea scrolls. Scientists thought when they were found they were going to shock the world at what was really taught back then. They were the ones surprised to find the Church has it down pat from the traditions. 😉

You misunderstand me, I don’t mean that it is going to come right out and say the word Trinity or right out and say Father, Son, Holy Spirit dozens of times but rather (Jesus) “to know Me is to know my Father,” or “The Father and I are one” or “before Abraham I AM” or “baptize in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit” or (apostles) “Just show us the Father and we will believe” (Jesus) “have I been with you this long and still you do not know me?” etc etc etc And finally I just thought I would ask a question. Have you ever read the verse where God says he will make man in his image? Because if you read it closely it says “let US make man in OUR image.”

E-sword is free, and so is some of their other materials including Bibles. For Catholic modules to add to e-sword, please visit this website.

ya, i’m not going into discussion about that one. It seems another thread is talking about it right now so you can go look at that one if you want.

that is genious. Someone already thought of that for us. Wait a minute. so why does it take so much work and research just to learn a simple principle like “Charity” You can learn about charity everywhere, not just in 14 bibles.
