It is my considered opinion that most protestants know very little about the true beliefs of the Catholic Church. They THINK that they know, but very seldom have gone beyond a very superficial knowlege of catholicism. Their information is derived from hearsay, the faulty teaching of poorly educated or self-taught “pastors,” or plain malice. Some, in the Jack Chick mode, deliberately lie, but most fondly believe what they say. As far as verse-spouting, most protestants have a set of bible verses that they trot out when attacking Catholicism. If you force them to go beyond those few verses or force them to place those verses in context, they are at a loss. Also, they are stuck by the fact that the Church operates on both the Word of God AND Sacred Tradition. And they refuse to accept that this is entirely Biblical. I lived in the Bible-Belt, and had to endure much mistaken ideas about Catholicism. I spent much time simply correcting mis-information. Made a few converts, but mostly corrected bad information. For those with open minds, you can make real progress, but there are a lot of closed minds out there, even when their very souls depend on it.
