Why do people vote against their own interests? (American Healthcare reform)

You are correct, premiums are “a risin”…fact of the matter is I just saw this morning on the news that AARP (which if you remember, backed this health care reform 100%) has hicked their premiums almost double on their employees, part of the rise being attributed to the new bill. I apologize if this has been already noted in this thread, I have to admit, I haven’t read each post entirely. I find it interesting, that AARP is still promoting the new law with all kinds of commercials telling seniors how wonderful it will be, but on the other hand, they have to raise premiums big time.
They’re now backed into a corner. They thought they’d pay for at least part of the cost of the new law with the new tax hike that they will now have to compromise on with the Republican House. They took a gamble, and …lost.
Mine jumped 50%

Last year, in a series of “town-hall meetings” across the country, Americans got the chance to debate President Obama’s proposed healthcare reforms.

What happened was an explosion of rage and barely suppressed violence.

Polling evidence suggests that the numbers who think the reforms go too far are nearly matched by those who think they do not go far enough.

But it is striking that the people who most dislike the whole idea of healthcare reform - the ones who think it is socialist, godless, a step on the road to a police state - are often the ones it seems designed to help.

In Texas, where barely two-thirds of the population have full health insurance and over a fifth of all children have no cover at all, opposition to the legislation is currently running at 87%.

Instead, to many of those who lose out under the existing system, reform still seems like the ultimate betrayal.

Why are so many American voters enraged by attempts to change a horribly inefficient system that leaves them with premiums they often cannot afford?

Why is that Americans are voting against steps to provide free healthcare when its in your own personal and financial interests?

Before anyone argues about my use of the word “free” - the healthcare is free. You pay tax yes, but it doesn’t increase when you go into hospital therefore you’re not being charged for the care you’re recieving, therefore it is free TO YOU. It’s like paying the postage on what you order but not actually paying for the order itself.

The article might be from earlier this year but it discusses the reasons why people have been against it, from an outsider’s perspective (British). This is where I’m coming from as a British person - I just can’t understand why people are against attempts to make it “free.” The issue of “Obamacare” is very much topical at the moment in the USA, and it’s got us Brits talking again too.
Nancy Pelosi didnt care what was in the Health Care Bill as related to health care because that was not the purpose of the bill. The purpose was and is to create the biggest entitlement in the history of the country with the democrats in charge of it. James Carville wrote a book that proclaimed 40 years of democrat control as easily within their grasp… that is what Obamacare is all about. Plus nothing. The only purpose is to eliminate all free market competition and take absolute control. Healthcare is the vehicle they chose to get and control power over the American electorate and the country.
Rudy Giuliani, whose responsibility it was to oversee and create solvency in 17 hospitals during his time as Mayor of NYC said… It is obvious to anyone that understands the bill that it does not solve anything… that is because it was not intended to.

I have a question. Why on earth are you bothered by an increase in taxes if it meant ZERO insurance fees? Surely you’ll either still be paying the same amount, or probably less actually.
So basically it comes down to pride?
Dear Lemon and Lime,

We’ll be paying more, taxes and insurance premium. Medical insurance premiums increased as high as 50% with the passage of the healthcare bill. There is no ZERO insurance fees. It’s never going to be FREE! Also, you’re penalized if you can’t afford Obamacare.

Is it prideful to not want to be gouged??? 😦

Update to this older thread –

Well, now we KNOW what’s in the PPACA and it’s horrifying!

Also, there are an extimated $100 TRILLION in unfunded liabilities, and an ever-growing bloated bureaucracy.

The following are quotes taken from the Q & A section of the full speech of Ms. McCaughey who has studied the PPAC Act:
Sec 4105a
Sec’y of HHS (Sebelius) can modify or eliminate preventive services for seniors. They already recommended that women 75+ no longer get mammograms.
Reimbursements to dr’s are cut so low that drs treating Medicare patients will be paid less than for anybody else, 1/3 of what they would get for someone who has private health insurance. There will be serious access problems.
Richard Foster has addressed this before Congress.
The law prohibits that dr from saying “I’ll provide that extra care you need for an extra fee”.

The PPACA also dictates to private insurers:
Sec 1311 empowers the federal govt for the first time to dictate how drs treat privately insured patients. Drs will be reimbursed ONLY when they follow exactly what the govt says is allowable. This covers ALL areas of medical treatment.

Yes, and its gonna get worse.

What’s our health care system going to look like come 2014? We can’t say now, because nobody knows. The planners themselves don’t know. So, it’s a real, real, real big stretch to say that this will be in everybody’s best interest. That is nothing less than a blind leap of faith, and that would be faith in government bureaucrats, regulators and politicians.

I can’t think of a worse place to put one’s faith.

The AARP has pretty much turned into an insurance company. They were just exceited at the prospect of having more clients.
Actually, AARP is not even that. It’s essentially an insurance “bundler”. It is not actually an insurer itself. But it does get a “cut” of the insurance it, in essence, brokers out to actual insurers.

And it is a lobbying organization.

That’s about the size of it.

Regulations are being written at a pace of 200 pages per working day - on top of the 2000+ page law that no one read before passing it. Anyone that claims that it will be better needs to start reading to prove it.
