Why do Protestant Apologists feel the need to lie about history and the Catholic Church?

The OP is referring to “apologists”, but I have just some stories from work involving the “twisting” of history and the misunderstanding of what the Church teaches…

One of my ex-coworkers is a relatively new Christian and was taking a Bible class offered by his non-denominational church. One of his comments to me was that the reformation took place so that a Bible could be placed in every hand. I had to explain to him that it was the invention of the printing press, NOT the reformation, which was responsible for this. I then asked him how the reformists would have placed a Bible in every hand if the printing press hadn’t been invented yet - he had no response.

Then while I was having one of my discussions with him regarding religion, another co-worker (who happens to be SDA) accused the Catholic Church of removing one of the commandments! I then had to explain to him that our version was taken from Deuteronomy, not Exodus. And when I asked him how “worshipping a graven image” does not violate the commandment “thou shall not have strange gods before me”, he had no answer. But then he accused Catholics of worshipping statues because to him, it looks that way! :banghead:

He also said the it was Jesus who handed Moses the tablets - don’t know where he got that from??

Also, an ex-Catholic friend of mine who is now Baptist uses the same accusatory rhetoric over and over again:
idolotry
worshipping Mary
sacrificing Christ over and over again
I’ve explained what the Catholic teaching is regarding these things and she just dismisses it. I guess it’s easier to believe the “lies” of her pastor than it is to believe a Catholic that actually knows what the Church teaches! 🤷

It’s very frustrating!
When reason fails, and emotion flails, prayer prevails.

Second of all, I DO understand Catholicism. What a concept!! Being as you accuse everyone who disagrees with you to be merely ignorant of the faith. You seem to think I would just give up questioning that which needs dearly to be questioned and challenged and just become Catholic. Well, I was Catholic, born and raised baptized and all. I attended mass every Sunday, went to confession once a month (at least), fasted during Lent, observed the holy days of obligation, venerated Mary, attended Eucharistic adoration many times and read from my Catechism much. Still think i don’t know what Catholicism is?? For decades I lived it. I left it like many have. I had many hours of discussions with priests as well and they furthered my journey out of the RCC to find the Holy Spirit where I hadn’t experienced him in decades, The RCC.
Hi Nella,
I’ve been Catholic all my life and I just started learning what the Church teaches and why a few years ago! Catechesis in the Catholic church has been practically non-existent for many years now. And, unfortunately, many of the seminaries were not doing a very good job either which is evident by a lot of the priests out there who do not follow Church teaching in its entirety. Thankfully, orthodoxy to the actual teaching of the Church is coming back. But one of the points I wanted to make is that you may not have been taught accurately. 😦

And when you said you couldn’t find the Holy Spirit in CC, maybe it’s because you’re equating the HS with a “feeling”? As human beings we all want to “feel” something in our spiritual life, but God doesn’t always work that way. I’ve never experienced the “warm fuzzies” that some people are blessed to have, but faith is about using your intellect and persevering to the end even when we might sometimes “feel” empty inside. I know God is always there for me and will never let me down, and He has proven that time and again in different ways.

I believe us Catholics could learn a lot from many of the Protestant churches. More focus on fellowship, Bible study, enthusiasm toward evangelization, etc. But as wonderful as those things are, they can never replace the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus in the Eucharist. And, yes, I believe that with all my heart (despite the fact that I may not receive “warm-fuzzies” at that time!). And I know the HS is with me, because I trust in the promises of Christ. 😉

*I just wanted to add my 2 cents in the off-chance that maybe my experience can help someone else! * 🙂

Well said! 👍 Sometimes the newest members, or just the newly catechized, are the most ablaze with faith. By the way, how often do you visit Protestant sites and criticize their beliefs? Just wondering…😉

Christ’s peace.

Let’s compare church unity before and after PPP (Prostestantism/Printing Press). Hmmmm…
He also said the it was Jesus who handed Moses the tablets
Well, the two were seen together later during the transfiguration…then they say WE don’t read the blble. 🤷

How long were they Catholic? 15 minutes? Once they have heard the truth, it is on them.

Christ’s peace.

what did the eucharist ever do to you but give you a fuzzy warm feeling that lasts one hour. Mother Teresa did not even get that much from that biscuit! 😃

PLEASE! It was what kept her going. It’s spiritual food-it makes no sense to those who are self-exiled in the temporal world.

I don’t know why blasphemy against the Eucharist is allowed on this site.

maybe because this site isnt governed by sharia law? 😃
I don’t know what ‘sharia law’ is. I’ll look it up.

I think we are all a bit too generous with our Non-Catholic brethren, who feel they can get their anger and aggression out against the Church by making blasphemous comments, e.g. against the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary.

We should report them, and they should be told to have respect for our beliefs, which is a Forum Rule.

Mary’s Nativity is celebrated on September 8th.

O Virgin Mother of God, pray for us.

Non-Catholics are welcome to participate but must be respectful of the faith of the Catholics participating on the board
Terms of derision, derogatory remarks, baiting, and inflammatory statements are prohibited.
I found your remark disrespectful, derogatory and inflammatory.

I do not think that is a fault of which you can be accused.

Edwin
Thank God I am not like the rest of men.

I never report anybody for scrullious, hateful, disrepectful, blasphemous remarks. And I just don’t kiss the ring of every Cardinal.

You may think your comments are clever, but they do nothing to develop the arguments being debated here. They make you look like a self-absorbed snoot. Just because God spoke to you this weekend doesn’t make you any better than anyone else. Your little comments are starting to get in the way of your listening again.

At least once a day! 😉
(Protestants have sites like this??)

Did you even read what I wrote? I said I’m not typically blessed with “warm fuzzies” which is why I have to depend on my faith and intellect! I know the Eucharist is Jesus because He said so, period.

How would you know what Mother Teresa received from God? Did you ask her?

Why are you even on this site??
