Why do protestants believe in Bible only?

Think outside the box for a moment would it really make any sense for Christ to give them the ability to forgive sins if it wasnt supposed to be passed down and was only temporary? Temporary meaning until the apostles died. What would be the purpose?
They were given the abilities they had to they could build the church, it is already built. The apostles did the job Jesus sent them to do. Priest would have to use for the power Christ gave the apostles they don’t have a church to build, nor do the priest had Jesus breath the holy spirit on them.

The apostles could forgive because of the relationship they had with Christ. They had to be able to forgive because Jesus wasn’t their. Jesus breathed the holy spirit on the apostles they are more than a priest. They were the very representative of Christ; especially Peter.
You didn’t answer my questions. I know that the Apostles were close to Jesus. I also know that they received the Holy Spirit. What I want to know is where in Scripture is the gift of authority to forgive sins taken away from the apostles’ successors? Where in Scripture does it say that one group of people (the ones mentioned in the bible) had confess their sins and we don’t?

I have talked with many people about the Catholic faith and have accepted much of what is disagreed with. It is the things no one has been able to justify is what I still disagree with. On other things people have pointed to scripture that proved me wrong, but no one had been able to do that with the things I disagree with.
I hope you’ve read through some answers right here. Please keep plugging on. 🙂

Remember that we all need God’s forgiveness, time and time again, because we all keep sinning. We don’t know when it will be our last day. Confessing sins to the Priest is a way to hearing someone say “I forgive you”. But this is not the priest but God giving you assurance.

It is because we sin, we hurt God but when we are repentant, He welcomes us back. And we know this through his Son’s words and teachings.

Keep in mind, that in John 17 Jesus prayed to His Father "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message

Thus it continues, the Authority passed down, by Jesus himself.

Baptism does forgive your future sin. But baptism is a rebirth of your soul you no longer want to sin. You don’t have to physically prey to God saying you are sorry every time you sin. You are in a state of mind where you hate the sin and want to be taken away from it. If you are baptized and continue to sin on purpose, then you were never baptized in the first place, because you did not believe in Christ.
Who says the unbaptized people dont hate sin? Muslims dont baptize and they hate sin, JW hate sin and they dont baptize inthe name of Christ? The devil preys on all and if you sin it wasnt because you dont follow Christ its because one is weak. Look I love my husband and I know he loves me and if he offends me it doesnt mean he loves me any less and I know that he feels bad for it and I cant just brush it off because he loves me but until I hear from his voice he is sorry then I will truly feel that love he has for me. We should never be proud to verbally ask for forgiveness just because we assume God knows we feel bad.

Do you have scripture or writings from early church fathers to back up these claims? Are you saying that you have never committed a sin after you were baptized?
I don’t need the early church fathers, look at what Jesus and John said in John chapter three. I have not been baptized yet; I am currently reading the entire bible to gain a full understanding of what Jesus did. But when I do I will be spiritually reborn, and I will most likely sin, many many times. Not on purpose of course, or with the intent on disobeying Jesus. But when I do I will be sorry and wish I had not done it, and will hope I never do it again. I don’t need to go and beg god for forgiveness, because he has already done so.

True you fall from Grace from the only source of Grace: God. This is very Catholic. However, how you do away with this:

19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
The apostles could do this, not all future priests.

Honestly when I go to confession I dont talk to the priest I talk to God. The priest is there to give me the message of forgiveness and to give me direction on how to prevent my falling back into sin, not to pass judgment on me.
That is what you should do, but that is not what the church sacraments say. It says the priest forgives you. What you do is what I think we should all do. I just don’t think it is required.

The early church fathers compiled the bible. So, you do need them. Without them, you wouldn’t have the book or that one scripture you are fixating on. If John chapter 3 was all you needed, then there would be no point for the other books.

Where in scripture does it say the gift is to be passed on. You should confess but it is not necessary for salvation. Just like you should love your neighbor as yourself, but you are not required this to be saved. Jesus said all you have to do is be baptized and believe in him and you will be saved.

Yes he does forgive me because he is acting in persona Cristi. He speaks for Christ but Christ is also present with my priest.

oh and its required at least once a year or as you deem necessary, personally I dont think thats a deal breaker.

Exactly, they compiled the bible they didn’t come up with the teachings. But if John 3 was what Jesus said, and Jesus is the word of God, and the word of God is truth, then what was written in john 3 was truth. If it were truth then why would you not believe it to be. John 3 is all you have to do to be saved, though there are other things that you should do that make you a better Christian, those things are taught in other places. And John 3 is technically all you need, it tells word for word directly from Jesus’ mouth what you need to do; everything else is just icing on the cake.

Saint Paul wasn’t one of the original 12. He forgave sins 2 Corinthians 2:10.

You should really read that link I gave you. If you missed it somehow here it is again.

They did build the church, maybe not a physical building and hierarchy of priest, but they spread the word of God and taught priest to continue teaching others. Also if every priest can forgive sins, then what need do we have for Christ? Why do we have to believe in him and be baptized? If you are correct then he has already given the power to forgive to all priest. So now we don’t have to deal with all the complicated teachings. We can sin as much as we want and all we have to do is have a priest forgive us. Now obviously none of this is true. Only God can forgive our sins. The only reason the apostles could was to start the church. Since Christ was not here to build the church with his power the apostles were given their gift in order to start the church.

Jesus said the Spirit would lead them to the fullness of truth right? the Spirit is what led the church to determine scripture not the other way around. you accept the bible is word of God because the church deemed it so through the Spirit based on the already established doctrines of faith already in practice passed down orally. There is nothing contradictory to what Jesus said in the Gospels in our doctrine I really hope you study the catechism.

Cak7711, Ephesians 2:20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.

When you build a house, building, or in this case a Church, you start with the foundation but you don’t stop there. Therefore, we must accept Apostolic Succession.

Who said they speak for Christ. I was not aware that I need to consult someone else in order to talk to Christ. Nobody has to speak for Christ because everything he needed to say has been said. All that is left is for us to follow his instructions. You don’t need to ask for forgiveness you already have it. Jesus said this, how could you possibly be arguing this. I have been repeating what Jesus said all day, when you all keep giving your interpretations. The word of God is not up for interpretation. Jesus said what to do and he never contradicted himself. If you say something other than what Jesus said you are implying that Jesus contradicted himself. If he did, what he said was not truth so he couldn’t have been the word of God or the son of God. And it this is so, and you are telling me that it was a lie when Jesus said all you have to do is believe in him and be baptized and that only god can forgive our sins, then I think we better get a fattened calf ready for sacrifice. This may sound extreme, but you are telling me that Jesus was wrong, and that I should follow what men say over the word of God. If you believe what Jesus said to the rabbi at the river then there is no argument. There is only truth and man made tradition. Which is yours and which is mine? Before you answer that think which side came from the mouth of the Son of God.

My case is closed; i’m going to bed, right after I prey for you.

The church continues to build up everyday. FYI so the work is not yet done. Also I wasnt talking about a church building I was talking about the church of believers (people). So you think we Catholics go out and sin all we want huh? Because we have confession we can do this? NO we dont want to sin, Who does? you think we would purposefully jeopardize our salvation because we know we can go to confession? No we dont live our faith that way, we dont know when we will take our last breath and have judgment. It would be a really poor way to live a Christian life. For those of us sinners who are lucky enough to wake up tomorrow we have the opportunity to go and seek forgiveness in the sacrament. For you to even imply that is how we live our Christian lives is sort of offensive to me 😦

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you call your spiritual leader a priest not an Apostle. And again correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe there were only 12 apostles.

Please dont prey for me but do PRAY for me hehehe. 👍 You know my priest, he speaks not of his own accord. 😉
