For some, if they don’t have anything to try and control they aren’t satisifed. Plus, they are scared they might like it.😉

Bill I don’t think it’s prohibited but for instance at our church we use juice mainly because of the children and also not to create an issue for recovering alcoholics.

I’m assuming this is what you are referring to. Or is it the drinking of wine in general??

Many non Catholic denoms adopted the anti drinking tradition over a century ago and many still cling to it. I think Baptists are notable in their anti alcoholic beverage position. This is actually behind the joke that you have to take 2 Baptists with you fishing because if you only take 1 he will drink up all your beer.
My favorite quote from these people is that wine wasn’t alcoholic in ancient times it was only grape juice.
Bless them because that is the least harmful of their errors. Nobody was ever hurt because they did not drink socially but the Holy Communion issue is another subject.🤷

We do not prohibit it persay but we strongly discourage its use because of how society has changed. So man people we encounter in the margins of normal society, where most of our evangelism efforts occur, have serious issues in this area. While some tend to be flippant about its use, we try to encourage sobriety in our transitions ministry and prison ministry.
It would be odd to talk about moderation when so many of them have the disease. If I were sitting in a church in a suburb, perhaps it would not come up as much. I can only speak for us naturally.

Mt son is a Baptist so thats why the question I was not allow to get wine for thanksgiving

The Presbyterian Church I grew up in used grape juice in lieu of wine in the Eucharist…I always found that odd, even as a child. Of course, they saw the Eucharist as merely symbolic, and did not take it regularly, for that matter. Hmmm.

Why do some Protestant churches prohibit the drinking of wine? Because they do not want them to go back in line for a second glass during Communion. 😃

Silly joke aside, perhaps they do not recognize the good wine from the bad wine? That wine drank in moderate amounts can be beneficial to health and wine drunk in excess can cause liver problems? Perhaps it could also be due to social problems they see in their community as a result from excessive wine drinking?

Speaking only of “good wine” ~ I have it on good authority that if you are ever lucky enough to be in Italy you should go to mass as often as possible (everyday! twice!) because they serve only good wine for the eucharist, not the icky sacramental win we have here. 😃

Jesus, however, is always there, no matter how good or bad the wine.

Baptists are hardcore anti-alcohol. Some even insist Jesus only drank and created non-alcoholic wine (good luck convincing them otherwise.) One local man was tossed out of his church for being seen carrying a beer can (one he had picked up from his front lawn that someone had tossed out of a car window and was on his way to throwing in the trash).

It looks like an effort to revise the bible to suit what was at the time a significant social phenomenon: The Temperance Movement.

Like revivalism, many churches still practice it without really even knowing why or where it came from and the biblical quasi-justifications have, by now, been hallowed by time so that it has become a part of these people’s whole theological outlook.

This “tradition” began with the temperance movement of the 19th Century. Before that the use of beverage alcohol was never an issue. Today it would be hard to find a Baptist who would say that drinking is sinful. Nevertheless it is discouraged, even frowned upon by many, on account of the admonition in Romans 14 about doing things that cause your brother to stumble. The idea is that it may not be harmful for you to drink but by drinking you may encourage others to do so who should not on account of alcoholism, etc.

Sorry…but the idea that if I have a glass of wine or a beer it will cause someone else to “stumble” makes as much sense as eating everything on my plate because there are starving people in China. If alcohol cannot be tolerated by some person means that person will have to face that demon. Do we hide the stores that say liquor on every corner?🤷

Maybe cuz some believe that consumption as mind-altering drugs is not not the kind of thing Christians ought to do.

Besides - there nothing worse that a drunk Christian.

How about an abortion clinic bombing Christian? Or a gay-killing Christian? Or a child molesting Christian?

We’re talking about doing what Jesus did, having a glass of wine (or beer), or two, or maybe even three with dinner and friends, or having a cocktail or two.

I am sure everyone agrees that drunkenness is a sin and some people cannot drink without getting to that point. Those people shouldn’t drink, but for those who can, there is nothing in the Bible saying that it is wrong for them to enjoy alcohol moderately.

CK,

I don’t usually do this, but you do realize that mental retardation is something people who have it have no control over, right?

I mean, I realize you were making a point about ignorant or stupid people generally and not really talking about those with learning disabilities but it may just be that a poster here has a relative or loved one with such a disability…

IDK, just a friendly word…

Sorry, but I could list several denominations with many thousands of members who would argue otherwise. Down here in the Bible belt having a glass of wine (or any other form of alcohol) is considered highly sinful by many. I personally think having a glass of wine is far less terrible than gossip, gluttony, racism, etc.but I have found that I am in the minority around here. (I don’t drink but only because of non-religious reasons. I do use alcohol to cook with on occasion.)
