“They would not leave if they could.” Eternal torment and torture. Of course, they would leave! Wouldnt you? Seriously if you were suffering in hell-fire, wouldnt you chose to leave if you had a way out.
This is a good question and one that does not have an easy answer. I agree that they would leave if they could…
If one has a way out of a burning building - one would take it right? That is because one recognizes the danger and acts properly and accordingly to known (or perceived) the circumstances…Yet sometimes people just don’t recognize the danger until it is too late.
Back in 1980 there was a fellow - an old man - living in the shadow of Mt St Helens. His name was
Harry R. Truman. He could have left…People told him to leave…He chose not to…Now he can’t…
This is a classic case…which I realize does not answer the question - would they leave if they could.
Perhaps more to that point are the people who are always in trouble but never really try to change their behavior. They are self-centered - angry - act often without thinking - or with little regard for others. Everything that goes wrong in their lives is someone else’s fault…they are perpetually “broke” but never want to work overtime…Grouse about not making enough money but never lift a finger to do more than the minimum necessary…think nothing of stealing or cheating if they think they can get away with it…
I’ve known such people and I’m sure that you have too.
Besides the things above - all mixed together in various ways - these same people look down on anything good. Church goers are “holier than thou”, hard workers are, “brown-nosers” and anything good and wholesome is to be ridiculed, belittled and avoided at all costs.
Such people are never happy and remain mired in their own “hell on earth” by their own volition. These people do not leave this hell of their own choosing - even though they can and even though others try to help them and show them the way out…
We - who recognize their plight - can do nothing but shake our heads and wonder, “why can’t they see?”, “How can they be so foolish”?, wonder “Will they ever learn?”
Of course some do - especially younger people who eventually mature (at least somewhat). But there are those who remain trapped in this hellish cycle regardless of all attempts to help them.
I think that it is this “type” of person that is referred to when we say that they would not leave (hell) even if they could.
I know the above is not a full answer to your question - and probably is not convincing on the face of it…but I offer them as thoughts for your consideration…that might provide additional perspective on the issue.
Peace
James
