I lived in East Anglia for 6 years just North of Huntingdon but before Peterborough.
Sounds like Ramsey or Whittlesea. Have I named the location?

Peterborough’s a dump but the cathedral is nice. It’s where Kathrine of Aragon is buried.

She’s had flowers put on her gracve every day since she was buried.
.I have some fond memories there.
I lived in Ely for a while. East Anglia is better beyond tthe fens though.

Wow! Even during Cromwell’s time? Whoodda thunk?

So does that mean people were wrong to worship Jesus? Since they would be worshiping mere flesh as well as God the Son?
Jesus is God, therefore we worship him and he most certainly came in the flesh.
I posted that scripture because you wanted proof for the Beatific Vision, I did not intend to prove the veneration of Saints with it.
Fair enough.

When Jesus sent the apostles to forgive sins, was that a trick to prevent people from confessing to God directly?
No.
Maybe you saw people praying near statues and assumed that the statues were the target of their prayers? :ehh: Never have I heard anyone say, ā€œStatue of Mary, please pray for me.ā€ Have you?
Nobody said ā€œStatue of Baal please pray for meā€ either.

This person is NOT a new member-he/she has 450+posts so I’m quite sure that he/she has seen Catholic apologetics on each subject that he/she is ranting about. In my opinion this person has no interest in discerning the truth or listening to Catholic explanations of the Faith but is only interested in telling us what we REALLY believe in.And it’s aaaaallllllll wrong. The original shotgun-style rant is something I would expect(and understand) from someone absolutely new to this website and who had no exposure to Catholic Answers-this person simply will not listen.
450+ posts later no question has been answered.

It got to the point where I felt I had to say why I am not a Roman Catholic.

I am sorry if I offended some of my Roman Catholic brethren in Christ but it got to the point where some needed to be offended to know where I stand.
🤷

Hello
As an American convert to catholicism (swam the tiber) from high church anglicanism I can appreciate the tenets of both.
2000 years of Church History and teaching of the same is in both.

Huh! many at this forum would disagree!
I also hope all catholics would know about the ā€œanglican useā€ mass and would attend the Mass at least once in their lifetime.
That’s interestring.
Of course if catholics (especially U.S. Catholics) knew about Guy Fawkes and the Treaty of Tordesilla that would always be a help in understanding the Catholic-Anglican political dispute - apart from the theological one.
What’s the treaty of Tordesilla?

As for Guy Fawkes. Trick or treat?

James I was a Presbyterian and like most Stuart monarchs was rather slimy.

Actually, I was an acolyte for over 10 years, a layreader, subdeacon, and an Aspirant to the Priesthood before I left.
Fair enough.
Unlike some *other *Anglicans, I can use proper grammar. šŸ˜‰
It’s not my fault Americans speak such an archaic form of English. šŸ˜‰

There is no such thing as proper grammer. The right term to use is 'correct grammar."😃

And speak with a proper accent?

I’m English by name as well as language. It’s not my fault you have a tell tale foriegn accent. The Dutch can speak better English than you can.

Yes and Cromwell was born in Ely and was member of parliament for Huntingdon:eek:

Cromwell was also a compete and utter Ā£$ā€œĀ£%Ā£$^ā€$.šŸ˜‰

I’ve been to Huntingdon and seen the stone on a building that said Cromwell was born there. And as much as I like Ely. I always thought he was born in Huntingdon. I lived in Alconbury for 6 years. Not far from John Majors house.

Could be. I know a person from the Netherlands who can certainly type English well. He’s RC.

But I can recognise a film reference when I see one.

And that is that anyway to speak of the Lord Protector? 😃

I had friends who lived in Ramsey and yes Peterborough is a dump but no more than some other places the cathedral is nice I saw the opera Daniel and the three young men there. The place is more musty than other cathedrals I’ve been in. One of my fond memories is going up to Kings Lynn and listening vivaldi being played at the church up there. I didnt have a ticket to see it so I sat on the steps and listened. Very nice. I like Norwich so yes pass by the Fens plus when I was at Eye the people there gave me a strange look. I’m not sure if it was because they were raised in the fens or if my american accent was not appreciated. I couldn’t tell which. But my best time there was when I went up to the Lake distict for a week. Got lost hiking up there got wet but had a blast.

Both Ely and Huntingdon claim he was their son.

Are you USAF?

I’m a Monarchist who likes ale. 😃

He had our king beheaded and closed all the pubs!

If that wasn’t enough, he went round smashing up nearly 1000 years of the country’s Christian heritage not because he and his mates thought it was idolatrous, they just liked smashing things up.

(A bit like Tony Blair really 😦 )

There seems to be more wood panels in it if I remember correctly.

I like Kings Lynn too.
I like Norwich

I don’t. But then I am from Ipswich. (The place with the good football (soccer) team) 😃
Ana ticket to see it so I sat on the steps and listened.
Do you mean Eye in Cambridgeshire or Eye in Suffolk?
if my american accent was not appreciated. I couldn’t tell which.
I don’t see why your accent wouldn’t be appreciated.

My Grandmother was a lakeland lass so I know it well. I couldn’t get lost in the lake District if I tried. šŸ™‚

Okay, so if the apostles forgiving peoples’ sins did not lead them away from Jesus, why do you say that priests today who do the exact same thing DO lead people away from Jesus?

From your OP:
The Roman Catholic Church teaches that ā€˜priests’ are mediators between God and man as well. Instead of confessing their sins to God through Christ they confess their sins to a ā€˜priest’ This is another trick to keep people away from Christ.
Modified:
Jesus taught that apostles are mediators between God and man as well. Instead of confessing their sins to God through Christ they confess their sins to an ā€˜apostle’ This is another trick to keep people away from Christ.
Please explain the distinction. 🤷
Nobody said ā€œStatue of Baal please pray for meā€ either.
My question was, "Have you ever heard anyone say, ā€œStatue of Mary, please pray for me.ā€ ?

The Catholic Catechism does not teach it. You have not heard people say it. So why do you think the Church approves of it?

Do you mean Eye in Cambridgeshire or Eye in Suffolk?
I’m not sure. It was just out side Peterborough on the way to Kings Lynn. BTW I also played rugby for 1 season at Ramsey. (Ramsey Rams near Upwood) I Propped (stunk) but had fun to.

John 20:23
If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

Roman Catholics and others claim this verse was only for The Apostles and ā€˜particular priests’ with ā€˜apostolic succession. I think that it is nonsense.

Luke 17:4
4If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, ā€˜I repent,’ forgive him."

If the Roman Catholic line of only ā€˜priests’ being able to forgive sins is correct then this verse must only be for them and not other Christians. After all what would be the point of a Christian ā€˜layperson’ forgiving someone if they that someone was still going to burn in Hell.

It is most bizarre.

Of course The Roman Catholic line is not correct.

2 Corinthians 5:16-17
16So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Forgiving others is contrary to the worldly point of view. The world always wants to get even but those in Christ want to turn the other cheek (Not always admittedly) As their view point has changed to that of Christ’s point of view they are able to forgive. As they are one in Christ and Christ has the power to forgive they also have the power to forgive.

Christ gives all Christians the authority to forgive sins and through them being more like him he also gives them the ability to exercise that authority.

To say that only priests with apostolic succession can forgive sins is to say that only priests with apostolic succession are Christians.

At least the Pharisee view has been watered down. The Pharisees didn’t even believe they could forgive sins but it is still wrong.
My question was, "Have you ever heard anyone say, ā€œStatue of Mary, please pray for me.ā€ ?

Fair enough. But if it looks like a duck…
