Why I am Staying Single

I don’t want kids mainly because I would prefer if it was just me and my husband. A kid is a big commitment and I’m not sure if I would be up to the task.

I was just thinking of going to London this Christmas to volunteer for Crisis at Christmas but it would be a bad idea. I’d be hanging around the usual crowd and before you knew it I’d like a guy and I’d want to kiss him and hold his hand, more than anything, but I can’t do that

Doglover, one cannot actually marry in the Catholic Church while precluding children. No one has to be enthusiastic or even positively want them, but the vows include accepting whatever offspring is conceived (while contraception is immoral). I’m sorry if this sounds cold or unsympathetic, but I have no wish to obfuscate the message by making it so nice it won’t feel serious. It is serious. And yes, taking care of children may be a scary task to some people, either because of the responsibility for their fate or because of the free time lost.

Now, I need to disagree with Sheep. I’m not a woman, I’m a man, and suffice to say definitely not asexual (nor one that has no experience with porn, unfortunately). While a man can’t help being attracted to women, perhaps he can’t help the first glance, he can help how long he allows his eyes to dwell. Or whether he allows his brain to process fantasy. It is awfully hard at times, naturally, possibly results in frustration (when you know it’s the right thing to do and are determined to do the right thing but not holy enough to enjoy the arduous path), but it’s doable. The key is working on it. Willpower and awareness can probably be trained to some degree using purely natural means, but according to our Catholic belief we do get supernatural aid in defeating our sins when we confess them. Nor do prayers go unanswered. And this certainly is a matter worth praying about.

As for porn, it usually takes some effort to find. It’s not exactly a non-decision, even though some people may perhaps suffer from a paralysis of the will that railroads them into looking at it so they think it’s an unconscious reflex and uncontrollable. But it isn’t. Uncontrollable is like turning your head after a very attractive woman when one isn’t focusing on self-control, yeah. But not stuff like looking at porn (though it may get to a point where the individual concerned feels it’s uncontrollable).

Plus, not just wanting to have sex but basically also wanting, enjoying, accepting the sexual pleasure from immodestly looking at somebody is sinful. Looking at e.g. nude art doesn’t necessarily need to be sinful but basically because it doesn’t necessarily need to immodest. Porn usually comes with something more than aesthetic appreciation of form.

Now as for how the OP feels about men going for porn or perhaps looking at real-life women that way. I understand that, and I agree with it. Nor am I pleased to hear about married or engaged people’s dreams of dating or kissing (forget bedding) a celebrity.

Regarding romance novels, they are sometimes referred to as porn for women. Depending on how modest or raunchy the novel is, that can be an exaggeration (or a flat out falsehood) but it can also be spot on.

Basically, fantasies are not okay. Matt 5:28 comes to mind. Strictly speaking, even fantasies about a spouse who is not currently present are not okay. In short, sexual fantasies are never okay (no matter what persons are imagined as actors; fictional characters aren’t free game, either), only real-life sex with lawful spouse is okay.

The absence of specific partner in the fantasy, notably a person existing in real life, or depersonalisation of a real-life person, doesn’t make it okay. Absent a partner, sexual activity is masturbation. Masturbation is always wrong (i.e. materially), regardless what form it takes and there are more forms than the simplest.

Basically, not specific moves representing the physical side of having sex are what makes things wrong but the seeking of sexual gratification where it’s not due. (This apart from the ‘cheating’ at boyfriend-girlfriend stage, which is more of a matter of broken promises and disappointed legitimate expectations, given as boyfriends and girlfriends don’t have the rights spouses do.)

There is surely a lot of room for compassion for human nature, such as not holding the purely physical momentary attraction against people, or even a lack of control leading to some actual transgression, but this doesn’t go as far as tolerating porn in marriage. Having mercy on the poor sod, especially if he apologises – yeah. Saying it’s normal… nope.

The modern age does seem to accept some forms or expressions or degrees of polyamory, but that’s wrong. (Not that it wasn’t a problem in the past centuries too.)

Personally, I tend to be understanding of what seems to come down to a bodily reaction or emotional attachment (as opposed to just indulging), though it doesn’t please me to see another man evoke it, especially when it looks like I’m not getting the kind of attention or appreciation he’s capable of extracting from the special woman in my life. It never feels good to feel ignored while your special person is being oh so responsive to a person of your sex right beside you as if you didn’t exist, either. Talking sexy about celebs (or other people anyway) would also fall outside my comfort zone. So, yeah, I’m looking for a woman who does not do that (without meaning to point fingers, though).

Doglover,

He had been a criminal and in jail and you are more concerned over what he was looking at than this? You dodged a bullet. He sounds like he was good to you and loved you, but not right for you.

Your friend was a little harsh with you, but you do need to move on. Staying “single” is not helping because you are still thinking of him and it is more healthy to meet new guys. As the song from the musical Cats says, “Love is never gone. As we travel on, love is what we remember.” You have both traveled on, but neither of you will forget the love you had.

Very good points Chevalier, completely agree with you. I personally can’t wrap my head around the fact that the attraction would even be there even for a split second if a guy is already in a committed relationship, oh well haha.

Carol - hi 🙂 happy belated valentine’s day!! Ah I’m over Lukasz now and don’t spend time thinking about him generally, the sad thing is that after he now changed his lifestyle recently and began living the straight path he thinks he’s better than everyone else and is rather arrogant so we aren’t friends any more. But I still am planning to stay single because I can’t wrap my head around this.

But I admit life is BORING now! I think I’ll write about this in another thread…

It will be there. Even for you also, actually. Just catch the difference between the initial reaction and dwelling on it.

You need a hobby, particularly one that also bolsters your self-confidence (I suspect the problem with feeling not up to the task of mothering a child can have something to do with missing confidence). And definitely, definitely, don’t expose yourself to guys when boredom works against you or you might end up with suboptimal picks. Or, on the other hand, you might end up expecting too much excitement from men whose strong points are rather dependability, stability, protectiveness, common sense and so on, which does include men with rather interesting personalities. On the third hand (;)), even guys with a flashing sense humour can’t keep increasing the dose as your tolerance increases, so they may start to feel boring for you some days into it.

And see a counsellor. You’ve been through much. They say someone who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client, and I think the same applies to counsellors. 😉 External qualified perspective makes a difference. 🙂

Hi Chevalier:) Actually I’m a very exclusive person. Even when I see 2 handsome guys on a movie, I immediately have to pick one to feel those delicious feelings of attraction towards and then the other one just normal “okay he’s good looking, yep.” Because I’ve been like this ever since I was old enough to be interested in the opposite gender, it came as a shock to find out how men and some women are visually. Don’t worry, I have no intention of exposing myself to guys 😃 But the excitement of being with guys for me wasn’t in the guys’ actions but just the whole experience you know? Like when you see someone you like that you have been away from for a few hours, deciding what makeup to wear, deciding what dress to buy with them in mind 😃 My biggest hobby now is fashion, I do have other hobbies like art, swimming, ice skating, nature, cooking, but they are lacklustre compared to fashion…fashion is all I have left now that romance is gone for good…I don’t think I need counseling, nothing really bad has happened to me fortunately…🙂

  1. If people were never attracted to other people while they are in a relationship or not, there would be no movies, no songs, nothing to ever watch on tv and no books to read.
  2. Yes it it very possible for men and women to be friends, without those benefits. Most of my friends have been guys. When I was in school, most of my female friends went boy-crazy. The guys didn’t go girl-crazy, at least not right away. They were however able to keep perspective about those of us not chasing after them. Also the guys didn’t run around gossiping about people.
  3. When the right ‘one’ comes along, you’ll know it. You wont mind his little flaws, and he will have plenty. You’ll relish the reality of knowing no matter where, how, or how often his eyes stray, he himself wont. Never say never, life plays tricks on us when we do. :harp:

I have to wonder, are you perhaps using the word attraction differently than everyone else? If not, then I have to say, it sounds to me like you are very much in love with an ideal of being in love rather than someone who is interested in being in love with a real person, accepting them for who they are, faults and all, and loving them, living for them, despite it all. It seems like you are far more interested in the pleasure you get out of feeling attracted to someone and the attention he gives you than in having a real relationship with him. If so, that is something you should seriously work to overcome, it is neither helpful or healthy.

Immortal, I have no problem with people being attracted to people while single, but they should be attracted to only their partner (in my opinion) while in a relationship. I know this is an unusual viewpoint, but I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I agree that men and women can be friends 🙂 It’s the attraction itself that bothers me, I didn’t think Lukasz would cheat on me but it seemed inappropriate that he felt attraction towards others.

Thewanderer, based on talking to people it seems like we have the same definition 😃 That is very important and I am willing to be with people despite their faults. In fact, I’d say I was pretty open minded. Most women I know like to be with a man who they think is good looking and who has a stable job and can provide for them. I did not find Lukasz good looking at all but fell for his beautiful soul. He was homeless and had no money and I had no problem with that. In fact, when I first started dating him, his hands were usually dirty - but shortly after I became his girlfriend, Lukasz stopped drinking and his hands were always clean 🙂

However, you see for me being attracted to other people is a dealbreaker. For some people, they do not like to be with a man who is sleeping with other women and they have that right to say, “I can accept certain faults, however this is a dealbreaker for me.” In my case I am quite accepting but the man’s attraction to others happens to be where I draw the line. Though you are quite right when you say that I am pretty “in love” with the glamour of a relationship - putting on nice makeup when you see the person, wearing something nice. But also invaluable is just spending time with them in GENERAL and feeling close to them and happy in their company 😃

Here is what you are saying:

Spent time in jail - dealbreaker? No

Criminal - dealbreaker? No

Homeless - dealbreaker? No

No money - dealbreaker? No

Poor hygine - dealbreaker? Maybe, let’s wait and see if he improves.

Drinker - dealbreaker? Maybe, let’s wait and see if he improves.

Looks at other women - dealbreaker? Yes!

Hahaha Carol - well, yes 😃 It does sound funny 😃

Actually when I was in London I kept a diary and it was funny because I’d write something like, “Lukasz stood me up because he was in jail. At least he had a good reason!” or “Lukasz couldn’t hang out with me today because he had to go to the police station” or “Lukasz got arrested for carrying a weapon”

Honestly though I don’t think that the fact that someone is in jail a lot makes them a bad person overall. It just means they are caught up in some activities they should not be doing and they aren’t willing to let go yet. For example my former roommate took heroin every day which is against the law, and drug dealers came to our flat daily to mix their drugs. However, my roommate was a good person. He did not want me to pay any rent although I could have done, he let me sleep on the bed while he slept on the sofa, every time he cooked something he would give me some, and every time before I could do chores like cleaning he would do it first. He was a kind and selfless person, so I just look at it as, he’s not ready to step away from his bad habits but he’s still a really good person. A lot of my friends who were criminals were respectful towards me, so I just look at the individual person.

Didn’t mean to be funny at all. This is serious. This is your life. These are the choices you have made.

Stands me up - dealbreaker? No

Illegally carrys a weapon - dealbreaker? No

Living with a drug addict - it’s ok, as long as I get what I need.

Drug dealers in the home - as long as I am respected.

You friend who takes herion and his drug dealers may make you feel respected, but they are not who you should look to for respect. Unforunately, I have lost respect for you after reading about the type of people you link yourself up with and how you have made excuses for them.

Carol honey, I understand how you feel, in the past I also thought that criminals were by default bad people, but when I got to know them I realised it’s a case by case basis. And it’s not about getting what I need (I could have afforded to rent a flat), the point I’m trying to illustrate is that my roommate had a beautiful heart and I would live with him again if I were to live in London again because he is a good guy. If it makes you feel better right now I’m not around those people any more ____

I know what women look for when they go boyfriend shopping, I know I don’t have those qualities in sufficient quantity and so I took myself off the market decades ago.

Oh my gosh, what whinny babies! I am in my late 50’s, never married, don’t currently have a boyfriend, and believe wholeheartly in romance and know that I will get married someday. Am I “on the market”? No, because it is not a “market”. Geez. You guys are depressing.

Nooo Trailor you can get to know women as friends and I think something will naturally develop when they get along really well with you and appreciate your personality!

I love your optimistic attitude Carol! hugs You’re older and wiser than us 😃

My family has it’s share of criminal members and close friends who are criminals. Some of them are very good hearted, kind, compassionate, as well as being intelligent and funny. However, I wouldn’t date a single one of them were I not related and single.

The reality is that, as wonderful as a person may be, there is more to choosing a mate than having a good heart. Sure, having a good heart is a must. But so is being a good provider, being responsible, and being there for your spouse and any children you may be blessed with. Which isn’t really possible when you could be arrested at any time. You can’t provide for a family if you’re behind bars and you certainly won’t be able to be there for them. You can’t offer much guidance and comfort for a spouse and kids if you’re locked up for years at a time. And even after one has committed a crime and served their time there are issues with being able to find employment as most companies either do not want to risk hiring a criminal and all the drama that can come along with it or are prohibited from doing so for insurance reasons. It’s not like a criminal can just get their lives straight as if nothing has ever happened. A criminal record follows one for a lifetime.

Your former boyfriend may be a great guy, but he certainly wasn’t ready for any real adult relationship. In order to be ready to date you have to have your life straight. Gainful employment and place to live at minimum.

My friend Cassandra also felt her boyfriends and friends were great people despite the fact that they were either criminals or too irresponsible to provide themselves with the bare minimum (being a job and a place to live, food, and utilities). She had 4 children by 4 different men who were involved in that kind of life. None of them cared for the children. She spent a good chunk of her life depending on family, friends, and state agencies to help her provide for her children and they did have to go without on a regular basis.

She finally married a “reformed” drug user and felon (he was convicted of assault with intent to do great bodily harm in a bar fight). She thought he was absolutely wonderful and would be a great husband. Right up until he stabbed her 35 times on their honeymoon while high on meth. Cassie died of her stab wounds and her children are being raised by her parents as none of their fathers wanted them nor were fit to care for them anyway. Her husband is serving a life sentence in prison. Criminals with good hearts are great right up until they aren’t.

I think the best thing you can do for yourself is find a better class of friends. People who accept adult responsibility, hold jobs, pay bills, and do not abuse drugs or participate in criminal activity. I also don’t think, given how you describe your life and friends, that you are anywhere near ready for a long term relationship and it is wise of you to stay single for now, at least.

Wow Jean that’s absolutely terrible what happened to your friend, I don’t know what to say :’(

I see your point…you’re right…

I got a few more, sadly.

Rob, friend of my family since I was a child. Great guy. Funny, hard working, nice to us kids. Got hooked on crack. Lost everything. Moved in with his mother. Stole repeatedly from her and other members of his close knit family. Died a few years back of a heart attack before he was even 50. The heart attack was due to damage from his drug use. Sad for him, but sad for us, too.

Scott, a guy a grew up with. Had a nice wife, a couple kids, a good job, a house of his own. Started using heroin and lost it all. Went into rehab and came out clean. That lasted a few weeks. He used again and died of a heart attack. He didn’t know his heart was damaged when he used, but his heart couldn’t take it. His body was found in his parents home by his ex wife and children. Scot was 33 years old.

I know a few other people who were not drug abusers and who were responsible adults who happened to have friends in the drug abusing and/or criminal lifestyle. They ended up getting caught up in their criminal friends drama and hurt or they had things stolen from them by broke and desperate addicts. It’s not just the criminals or the druggies that get seriously wounded or even killed. It can also be innocent friends of theirs who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’d hate to see something like that happen to you.

Thank you for the sympathy regarding Cassandra’s loss. She was a good friend. I miss her. Please pray for her soul. She was a good person with an open heart.

Oh my God those are terrible stories Jean…Wow…I didn’t know heroin was that serious…my roommate in England uses every day and I don’t want him to get a heart attack, how can I approach him about this? I can tell it has affected his brain so I can’t really talk about it in as sensible as way as you’d normally talk to people…I did not know that drug use can lead to such big health problems since he is more than 50 years old and seems healthy. I really do not want something to happen to him.

And thanks for caring about me 🙂

So about the original topic…Last night I had a dream where I was on vacation and they assigned a guy to my room. He was friendly. I called him and told him I was going to have a shower and he could join me. But while on his way I decided it’s a really bad idea because it would probably lead to a relationship (see, even in my dreams I am very aware of my decision to stay single, haha)

Anyways when I woke up from the dream, I felt like, man I do miss that…having a romantic shower or bath with someone. And it’s not going to happen for me again weeps I don’t see the point of casual stuff because unless the person and I have emotions for each other, it’s pretty pointless in my opinion…
