Why Islam denies the crucifixion of Christ

The Koran also says that all Jews worship Ezra (9:30).

We already know the Koran CAN be wrong.
As well as the fact that the Trinity is three gods (S. 5:73), which is completely wrong. Hence why when so many first-time Muslims come to this forum and open up with, “You Christians believe in three gods!” they simply get laughed at.

A book which cannot even get Christian doctrines right cannot possibly be expected to be taken seriously on a Christian subject such as the crucifixion.

Brother planten said: “How (Jesus) was alive is a disputed matter,” and i’m tired of disputing it. None of you have seen Jesus physically, but you insist on this.
It’s like trying to prove how all the other miracles happened. All speculation.
Now, if you say you “see” Him with the eye of God, your eye of truth, inner vision, the heart’s eye, Then you have my attention, because that is the determinant to behavior.
I have always told you and the Christians straight out, planten, it is a spiritual reality. What is so hard about that? Your ancient formulas seem to put matter above spirit!
It was reported elaborately by the writers, but symbolically. It is not faulty. I’m the one talking about the “crucial” (of the Cross) issue. The spirit is the substance and the body does not “matter”. Another reason I say this is, if you’re expecting the Nazarene to come with nail holes in His hands, you will never see it. But if you hear the Truth-Speaker, then drop everything and run to Him, because His Voice is God’s. God “has tired” of our love of cinematics, just as He became incensed at the blood of bulls and incense. Don’t make this another “Nehushtan” that has to be busted up.
I have already told you there are many who have seen Jesus Christ alive in Body over the past 2 milleniums. Sadhu Sunder Singh of India is one of them. There is a book written by him. “At his Master’s feet” is an incredible book containing conversations he had with Jesus Christ.

I personally know a person who had seen Jesus and had physical contact with Him twice on different occassions. There are many around the world who have such blessed experiences.

I know that you may dispute them. But coming back to the Scriptures. St.Thomas was the person who disbelieved Jesus’ resurrection in the first instance, but he was confirmed of it by Jesus Himself by showing Thomas that He has risen in His Body explicity.

Now we believe only in the New testament rather than Baha ‘u’ llah’s preaching that Jesus was only spiritually resurrected centuries later.. It is same with case of Mohammed also.

God Bless

B W, do you believe in Jesus as your God or not?
Do you believe in Holy Ghost as God or not?
Do you believe in the Father as God or not?

Then you also say Jesus is everything, i.e. the great God. All these things are well known from posts on this forum.

If you believe in all of above then you do believe that there are three gods. That is settled.

Then you also try to say that they all three are One. Yes, you say that. I do not know why. But I can say back to you that your One God is three gods or composed of three gods. You cannot deny that.

You have three gods (some where) yet You say that you believe in One God. Similarly I can say that you believee in One God but actually you have three gods.

If there is no three gods then what is Trinity?? Please do not run off to Triune.

Or just explain what is meant by Triune. Is it something three legged or three pronged?? Would be something very hard to understand.

You are right. But God allowed that to Muhammad and allowed few (max 4) to other Muslims under some strict rules. It is written in the Quran.

I do not mind if there is something in the sacred books of the Baha’is that Bahaullah was allowed two wives and all other mankind was to have One wife only. Then his son, Abdul Baha should have acted on the order of father and should have had only one wife. But he did not know about it or the order for monogamy came very late to bahaullah.

There are some differences in the order and approach.
Bah ‘u’ llah’s error was that he did not include the sanctity of his marital affairs in his revelation so that the followers could accept it. Mohemmed could include them in his.

Always learn from mistakes of the past! If any one is ever having a new revelation from heaven in the coming days…

I notice you didn’t answer me.

And the concept of the trinity is the three persons who are all one. They exist as the same essence. They are the same entity so to speak.

As it is written:

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Let me ask you

Do you have a body?
Do you have a life?
Do you have a spirit?

Do they all belong to your eclusive full personality?
Does three substance of your same self can be identified differently?

If the answers are “yes” your questions are answered. You can know now the holy trinity. The triune God.

Jesus says so - Hence we believe so.

Revelation :1:1
**The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants **things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

Rev:1:7-8
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Rev:1:11
Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

Rev:1:17-18
And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Rev:21:10-13
And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last
Rev:21:18-19
For I** testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: **And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

You can change these scriptures or believe in different revelations contradictory to this and teach them to many at your own risk.

God Bless

Sorry, what? I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here.

I’m breaking my blocking of Planten temporarily because this is too good to pass up.
If there is no three gods then what is Trinity??
Ladies and gentlemen, I am going to show that Planten has no idea what he is talking about and does not even have an educated opinion on it. And he will not be able to deny it because I am going to use his own words.
B W, thanks for your long post. I did not study Trinity because I am not a christian. (link; emphasis mine)
Please, planten, do not pontificate to Christians what you know nothing about, and what you yourself admit to knowing nothing about and not even studying. The Trinity has been defined and explained ad nauseam, but you have shown that you have no willingness to learn no matter how detailed and patient people are with you. Therefore you cling to the inaccurate explanation of the Trinity found in your Quran, and ergo the historically and scripturally unsound, as well as incoherent explanation regarding the crucifixion.

Again, there is no reason for Christians to accept the denial of the crucifixion by Muslims, and we have not seen a real reason for Muslims to deny it other than circular logic.

pulls out his “List of Planten Debate Tactics”, checks off “Repeats argument already used”, and puts his pen next to a box marked "Denies he ever made the statement cited against him despite the link given to the actual post"

Clearly they’re rhetorical questions. He doesn’t want you to answer with stuff like “logic” or “reason” or “thought”. He wants you to embrace the truth that is Islam, a truth that requires not thinking, much like crashing a porshe into a tree while drunk.

Do you believe in Jesus as your God?
Do you believe in Holy Ghost as God?
Do you believe in the Father as God?

If you believe in all of above then you do believe that there are three gods. That is settled.
If there is no three gods then what is Trinity??
A very good question.

Servetus, the Christian genius, was burnt in a bonfire of his own books in 1553 just for writing, “The Holy Spirit as a third person of the Godhead lands us in practical tri-theism, even though the unity of God be insisted on. It is not a separate being, but an activity of God Himself. The doctrine of the Trinity can be neither established by logic nor proved from Scripture, rather, it arose out of Greek philosophy. Worst of all, this doctrine incurs the ridicule of the Mohammedans and the Jews” (De Trinitatis Erroribus)

The fact is even the early church fathers described the Trinity as consisting of 3 gods.

Augustine believed the 3 guests of Abraham were actually the 3 gods themselves, “Since three men appeared, we should understand the equality of the Trinity, the one and the same substance in three persons” (Augustine, De Trinitate)

Eusebius the church father historian wrote, “He himself is Son of God, but not true God. For there is but one true God, the one before whom nothing existed. The Son is simply an image of the true God, but not Very God” (Eusebius, letter to Euphration of Balanea)

And what about the wife of the Holy Spirit? “You know very well the intimate and wonderful relations existing between the Blessed Virgin and the Holy Ghost, so that she is justly called His Spouse” (Pope Leo XIII, Divinum Illud Munus)

How do you explain Mary as the mother of God (Jesus), yet at the same time she’s also the wife of God (Holy Spirit), just like the lover of Christ in the Canticles, unless Jesus and the Holy Spirit are 2 separate Gods?

That’s why some just gave up on the explanation of Trinity,

Letter of Alexander of Alexandria to Alexander of Constantinople: “The indescribable personality of the only-begotten God is beyond the sharpest conception of the Evangelists and perhaps even of angels. Therefore I do not think men ought to be considered pious who presume to investigate this subject, for they disobey the injunction, “Seek not what is too difficult for you, neither enquire into what is too high for you” (Sir 3:21).
The knowledge of many other things is beyond the capacity of the human mind, and cannot therefore be attained, as Paul said, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have they entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love him”. God also said to Abraham that the stars could not be numbered by him; and it is likewise said, “Who shall number the grains of sand by the sea-shore, or the drops of rain?” (Sir 1:2).
So how then can any one but a madman presume to enquire into the nature of the Word of God? And so our Savior, in his kindness to relieve them of the burden of striving after this knowledge, told them that it was beyond their natural comprehension, and that the Father alone could discern this most divine mystery. “No man,” said he, “knows the Son but the Father, and no man knows the Father except the Son”.* It was concerning this same subject that the Father said*, “My mystery is for me” (Isa 24:16)” (Theodoret, H.E.)

The true profession of the mystery of the Trinity is to admit that we do not comprehend it” (Jerome, De myst. Trin.)

If anyone says that in divine revelation there are contained no true mysteries properly so-called, but that all the dogmas of the faith can be understood and demonstrated by properly trained reason from natural principles- let him be anathema. For the divine mysteries, by their very nature, so far surpass the created understanding that, even when a revelation has been given and accepted by faith, they remain covered by the veil of that same faith and wrapped in a certain obscurity” (1st Vatican Council, Dei Filius)

But if anyone insists, the Christian god can best be described as a tri-headed god: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8b/Holytrinitygv.jpg 😉

Is the belief in the crucifixion of Christ necessary for salvation for anyone?

Catechism

839 "Those who have not yet received the Gospel are related to the People of God in various ways…

841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. “The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.”

843 "The Catholic Church recognizes in other religions that search, among shadows and images, for the God who is unknown yet near since he gives life and breath and all things and wants all men to be saved. Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as ‘a preparation for the Gospel and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at length have life.’

Gal 1:8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

1 Cor 15:2By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importancea: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

Danger! Danger, Will Robinson! An attempt is being made to commit a strawman to distract from the crucifixion!

So to get us back on track…
I think we’ve gotten off-topic. Let’s try to return to the OP’s subject.

I’d like to bring back up what I’ve argued twice before, and which I feel hasn’t really been addressed (planten attempted to, but his argument essentially amounted to “I disagree” and then changing the subject). The Koran argues that there is “no certain knowledge” and only “conjecture” among Christians regarding the crucifixion and what happened afterward…and yet, the majority of orthodox Christian denominations and churches (note the use of the little “o” 🙂 ) agree wholeheartedly on what happened at the crucifixion: namely, Christ suffered, died, was buried, and rose again.

Regarding the crucifixion itself, all four gospels agree conclusively on several important facts:
  • Christ was crucified on Golgotha, also known as Calvary [Matt 27:33; Mark 15:22; Luke 23:33; John 19:17]
  • A sign was placed over Christ’s head [Matt 27:37; Mark 15:26; Luke 23:38; John 19:19]
  • Jesus was crucified between two thieves [Matt 27:38; Mark 15:27; Luke 23:32; John 19:18]
  • The garment Christ wore was divided and gambled over [Matt 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34; John 19:23-24]
  • ** Jesus died on the cross** [Matt 27:50; Mark 15:37; Luke 23:46; John 19:30]
Muslims, on the other hand, have S. 4:157 in their Koran to deal with:

That they said (in boast), “We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah”;- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not. [S. 4:157; Yusuf Ali]

Amazingly enough, while a Baptist, Methodist, Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox can look at the passages I’ve cited and agree on what they mean, we cannot find that in Islam. The majority of Muslims at large, and especially Muslim apologists, cannot even agree on what S. 4:157 means. Some of the most interesting and popular theories include:
  • Some believe that God made Judas appear as Christ, and he was crucified instead (an Iranian movie was recently released, in response to Mel Gibson’s Passion, that showed this, and those who support the Gospel of Barnabas also uphold this idea).
  • Some believe that one of the disciples volunteered to be made to look like Jesus, and therefore be martyred (Baidawi wrote on this to some degree).
  • Some take a more Docetic approach to the literal meaning of the passage and say that the pain, suffering and agony on the crucifixion was simply a big illusion (Yusuf Ali writes on this in his exegesis of the Koran).
  • Most popular among Muslims is “the swoon theory,” which says Jesus feinted on the cross, recovered from his wounds, and later woke up (popular Muslim apologist Ahmed Deedat argued this, as does Shabir Ally).
  • Some Muslim apologists, recognizing the wealth of theories within Islam regarding the crucifixion, basically summarize that there’s no way to know and we just shouldn’t care.
Therefore it is quite ironic that it is Christians who are accused of having “no certain knowledge” and “conjecture” when the only side that seems to suffer from this is the side of Islam. Again, we Christians must ask - given this information on the certainty of the cross in Christianity compared to the blanket denial in Islam - why do Muslims deny the crucifixion of Christ?
Again, I open the floor to any Muslim (other than planten) willing to respond.

Again, misinterpretation and context when drawing on Christian passages and sources…

Go back to the beginning of Christ’s ministry…the baptism by St. John the Baptist, the Theophany of the Holy Spirit appearing as a dove over Christ, and the voice of God saying, ‘This is my Beloved Son for Whom I am well pleased’.

There is great significance in this event. It is revealing God has dimension as ‘Father’, whom Christ also asked us to call Him, ‘Abba’, meaning Father. Jesus said He and the Father are one.

You Muslims also refer to the Spirit of God…that is the third person…so you Muslims already believe in two persons in one God.

Holy Trinity is simply a term created by the Church to define a sacred mystery that is beyond the human mind. Atleast our understanding of God is not one of chaos, brutality, and deliberate disinformation.

I also think it a real issue when several people come on here using the same name and keep the communication going in circles…it is a game.

Or people coming in here who are not Christian and thinking they know our culture and religion better than us and then quote distortions.

Let me ask you

Do you have a body?
Do you have a life?
Do you have a spirit?

Do they all belong to your eclusive full personality?
Does three substance of your same self can be identified differently?

If the answers are “yes” your questions are answered. You can know now the holy trinity. The triune God.
E W, good approach but irrelevent. What would you call the combination of these three things body life and spirit?? Shall we call it a body??

Okay, my body is a body.
My life is not a body.
My spirit is not a body.

Or I can say:

My body is not God.
My life is not God.
My spirit is not God.

But in your case:
Your father is God.
Your son (Jesus) is God.
Your holy spirit is God.

So all three are separately, independenyly Gods and then at the same time three together are also God (One God). So your example does not apply with Trinity of body.

No, Planten. I understand what you are saying, but you have it wrong, because the Trinity is NEVER SEPARATE. The Trinity is eternally undivided and uncreated. Just as there was not a time when you did not have body (or else there would be no “you” to speak of), there was not a time when the Trinity was lacking or separated in any way. I know this is hard to understand because Islam teaches you to think of things in a very corporeal way (such as in the Qur’an, which rejects Jesus Christ’s Divine Sonship because God cannot have a son when He has had no wife!), but this is the Christian understanding. The Trinity cannot be divided!

Huh…I’d rather be called a polytheist by someone ignorance telling me I worship three gods, but will the consequences be that I deserve my head chopped because of that?

What is so holy and wonderful that one should akcnowledge God is singular? The bible already said:
-even Satan knows that God is one, Muslims akcnowledging singularity of God don’t make them truer than other!
-not all that call “Lord, Lord” will find himself be a true devotee of God! Even God says He will not recognized them!
-One will be a true worshipper of God if he/she does what He pleases that is to love God with all his heart and love others as the manifestation of loving God. How would someone say that he’s a true believer of God who is invisible if he can’t see and love the manifestation of God in all that He created?

Someone who says that God should be understood by his mind is really someone who is trying to put the whole water from the ocean into one small bucket! Arrogant mind is blocking itself from the light of truth.🤷

Instead you have accused me of not knwoing about christianity. That was when I had come on this forum as a new entrant. I still do not claim understanding of christianity any more than the study of the four gospels. Much less do I understand about Trinity.

And you have helped me nothing. I know you people believe in three gods and One God. The belief in three gods is there along with One God. It is such a difficult subject so please do not blame any one if they do not understand your Trinity. We do not see much of Trinity in the gospels except an advice to preach in the name of Father, son and the holy ghost. That does not say that they were gods.

There is only One God. The other two (your attachments) are the beloved ones of God and theya are from God. Nothing more. I am not preaching to you B W. I am inviting you to make your reply to my questions in Yes and NO. Thanks.

Since Planten has raised some issues in his post 632 yesterday here I wish to respond:

Platen wrote:

The Baha’is do not believe in physical resurerction of Jesus. I just wasted my time with them. They had admitted it in clear words but I did not understand it. Now I have seen their clear words in post #619. See below:

We do not believe that there was a bodily resurrection after the crucifixion of Christ,

My reply:

Baha’is believe Christ was crucified and spiritually resurrected…

The resurrections of the Divine Manifestations are not of the body. All Their states, Their conditions, Their acts, the things They have established, Their teachings, Their expressions, Their parables and Their instructions have a spiritual and divine signification, and have no connection with material things.

~ Abdu’l-Baha, Some Answered Questions, p. 103

Platen:

Moreover, their leaders do not have real knowledge. I show some mistaken ideas of their leader Shoghi below to prove that he knew nothing about Quran or Muhammad or Islam. Shoghi gave some bad or wrong translation of a verse of the Quran:

In that verse 4:156, there are no words “One like him”. Why did Shougi try to mislead the world about Quran? That was bad work and illegal. Muhammad never said it was “One like him” on the cross. And Muhammad never said that Jews succeeded in destroying the physical body of Jesus. Muhammad never said such a thing. But Shoghi is trying to be a spokesperson for Muhammad. Why??

My reply:

It is neither without knowledge nor “illegal” as you suggest…

Please review the translations and you will see… Most translations have the words you mention in Surih 157 from:

Shakir translation:

and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so (like Isa) …

A. Yusuf Ali has:

but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them,

*The word is *شُبِّهَ

To resemble or appear

Transliterated “Shub-biha”

Now there’s a variety of interpretations and view on this… Most Muslims take the words very literally that Jesus was not crucified and that maybe Simon of Cyrene or Judas was substituted hence the one like him or resembling him… The Ahmadi view as you know is that He swooned on the cross and survived the crucifixion and managed to travel to Kashmir.

The Baha’i view is that Jesus really was crucified and those who were there assumed it meant the end of His cause and that they “killed the Messiah…”… but I would also ask you to consider the following (Quran 2:154) Ayah:

And say not of those who are slain in the way of Allah: “They are dead.” Nay, they are living, though ye perceive (it) not.

So I would submit that Baha’is know something about resurrection and about the Islamic view of Crucifixtion.

Platen:

I learnt that these Baha’is had many problems such as bigamy. They do not believe in Bigamy and Bahaullah spoke against more than one wife. But he himself had two wives.

My reply:

Baha’is do not have many problems with “bigamy”. They are monogamous!

Seems to me Platen you are posing as some sort of authority on Baha’i faith…

How can this be?

Actually Baha’u’llah was raised in Shiah Islam and He was according to that law and culture permitted up to four wives…

But here are the wives of Baha’u’llah:

(1) Nawáb (Asíyih Khánum) (2) Mahd-i-'Ulyá (Fátimih Khánum) (3) Gawhar Khánum. So there were three not two as you stated above.

Platen wrote:

Then Abdul Baha ( son of bahaullah) also had two wives. Why was that??

My reply:

Well maybe it’s becasue Abdul-Baha had one wife

Munirih Khanum

Platen:

They had suggested (ruled) that leadership will go to the physical male child only. But Shoghi was not the male child of Abdul Baha (?) or Bahaullah, or at least Shoghi did not have any male issue. So the blessing should be cut of at that point. But they are working hard and preaching their faith which was not well known or well spread in the life time of Bahaullah. That was not fair.

My reply:

Shoghi Effendi was the grandson of Abdul-Baha and mentioned in His Will and Testament as the Guardian of the Faith… Shoghi Effendi was also a descendent of the family of the Bab.

Platen:

Why was it that teachings of Bahaullah were not made available openly in the life time of Bahaillah?? Bahaullah lived a long life. His teachings are now being showered on us.There is no way to check whether he actually said any of those things.

My reply:

Actually the teachings of Baha’u’llah were widespread and known and published in India … There is a way to check whether He actually “said” any of those things… It’s called “authentication” through documents…

See:

bahai-library.com/?file=uhj_numbers_sacred_writings

Platen:

There are some serious problems in Baha’i faith. But let them preach. They have a high uphill task. It is true that the Muslims of the time of Bahaullah were very much misled in their theology. That much is true.

My reply:

How about you investigate a little further before you claim such expertise?
