Why it is Dangerous Not to Believe in Purgatory

1Cor 3
12 Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw –
13 each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.
14 If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
17 If any one destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and that temple you are.
18 Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.
19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”

Seems a purging may be alluded to in these verses.

There is nothing in this passage that says a soul is being cleansed only that a person’s “works” are be tested by fire.

I think you’ll discover that most Christians do believe we need to cleansed from our guilt of sin before we are in the presence of God. They just get all twisted up about calling it purgatory, I suppose.

The only Christians that may have an issue with this view are the ones that believe Jesus’ death on the cross made it so you cannot be culpable for sin. Which of course I believe is contrary to scripture.

The only thing that can cleanse us is the blood of Christ… I John 1:7 is clear about this: but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

It is His blood only that cleanses us and not fire.

we are not put on Earth to enjoy life and forget about all the injsutices perpetrated against others… which is what one would have to do to toally enjoy his life… He would have to absolutely forget about all the suffering and misery humans go through… and if you have never suffered… If you have no sufferings now… you are undoubtedly on your way to Hell… because to do the right thing always involves suffering…

This sounds like something Mother Teresa would say. For those who don’t know the true meaning of these few words, these words may sound like a very unhappy life. For those who do, it is the means to a fullness in Christ.

Where do you see in this passage anything about a person’ soul being cleansed? I see works being tested by fire but nothing about a soul being cleansed by fire.

Where does the church say that I John 1:7 is about purgatory?
Secondly there is no mention of blood in I Corinthians 3.

This testing is something that happens after we die in which we do not have a physical body as such.

It’s not every day i get compared to Mother Teresa… (probably due to the fact that i am really not much like her… )

you talk of fullness in Christ… People who don’t know Christ (Real Presence, etc…)… i feel sorry for them… or i should… (i mostly tend to get frustrated with them until i think about it…)

Anyway… to be in Christ IS life… Jesus said he is the way, the truth and the life… There is NO real life without him… Sin brings pleasure but only for a time… Jesus and His love are forever…

well, if someone told you that something just happened and he witnessed it… you would believe him over someone who did not witness it…

Technically, the Bible was written so far after the Church was established that its a wonder anyone worships it (as Protestants seem to)…
