Why Marijuana in itself is NOT sinful

to the post above…You are wrong about that, and there have been many raids to peoples homes that are allowed medical marijuana by state law and yet the feds override state law and there have been instances where the DEA agents have tazered and beaten old, sick people who pose no threat to society for smoking something to help with there pain …This in my mind is pure evil.

Yes they do. Oregon is an example. No one in Oregon gets in trouble for possession of marijuana if they have a medical card and don’t have more than they are allowed.

In Christ,
Rand
Really? That’s great. But here in California, it doesn’t matter if someone has a medical card or a prescription or a whole phalanx of doctors testifying that they need it - the feds will still bust down the doors and treat the patient like a criminal.

Once again, let me post a link to William F. Buckley on the Death of Peter McWilliams - this happened, and still happens, in California.

P.S. - let me just clarify my own position: I don’t smoke pot or ingest any other illegal substances, and have no interest in doing so even if they were legal. However, like the late Mr. Buckley, I was a great admirer of Peter McWilliams and consider his death shocking and unnecessary. Those of you who keep talking about the “side effects” of marijuana - how would those side effects have made Peter’s life, or death, any less horrible?

(I meant have said more - hopefully you got the idea!)

I used to smoke pot regularly. It makes you stupid. So do other drugs.

Stay away from it.

Do you think there is a difference between the reasons you smoked pot, and the reasons a cancer patient might smoke it? Can you understand why someone who is in terrible pain might not care all that much about whether it made them stupid?

No. I know what it’s like to get stoned. I’m not talking about an occasional puff either…I’m talking about being super stoned.

The whole idea that it eases pain is such a lie. I burned my hand once on the stove when I was stoned. It still hurt.

I have a few comments for you:

1- Marijuana is an object and not an act and so it cannot be sinful by definition.

2- Smoking it is not automatically sinful.

3- Breaking a law that forbids its use is sinful.

4- Your posts are not very coherent and I was wondering if that is due to the consequence of drug use or just to the fact that you want to make a statement without listening to dissenting opinions.

I think you misunderstand what medical marijuana is for. It’s not to help you be Superman and stick your hand on a hot stove (something I’d advise you against doing in the future, stoned or not, by the way  ). One of the things it does is prevent nausea in people who are taking very strong painkillers - like what terminal cancer patients take.

Did you read the link to the William F. Buckley article (I’ve already provided it twice in this thread so won’t repost)? Do you understand that easing nausea might be a good thing for people taking strong painkillers?

In this culture, its difficult for one to look sophisticated while smoking pot.

And those contraptions make pot smokers look obsessive.

The world of most of the pot smokers I’ve known revolves around smoking pot, trying to find pot, finding an “honest” supplier, being paranoid of the police, avoiding drug tests or finding herbal cleansers, etc., etc.

Having said all that, the pot smokers I’ve known create less havoc in their families than the alcoholics I know.

Personally it would be nice to get some neutral info, from some organization without an axe to grind.

I find it risible that things like marijuana is illegal for people with terminal illnesses and in extreme pain. I guess they’re afraid they’ll have a monkey on their back for their last few months and become a menace to society from their sickbeds.

Although I’m sure Rush Limbaugh can tell you that you ain’t safe from addiction to medically prescribed, legal pharmaceuticals either.

Here’s my take:

Positives about marijuana:
  • not physically addictive (compared to baccy/alkie)
  • less tar/harmful chemicals than 'baccy
  • definite benefits for the amelioration of suffering/symptoms of various illnesses
  • smoke smells nicer than tobacco smoke (to me, anyway)
  • cool gear
Negatives about marijuana
  • psychologically addictive
  • mood altering/intoxicating, even in minute doses
  • soporific/sedative; impairs judgement/reaction time
  • while lower in tar/toxins than tobacco, as mentioned above, the smoke is far hotter and held longer in the lungs, causing its own detrimental effects
  • the stuff the gov’t of Canada legally grows and issues to medical marijuana recipients wouldn’t stone Ned Flanders
  • is illegal (this is a biggy)
  • since it can only be purchased illegally, it helps to support/fund the continuation of a number of criminal enterprises
  • the stuff sold now is far more potent than the grass of the sixties, and often cut with other unknown substances, with no quality control (it’s not like it’s FDA approved, eh?); I have heard from some who indulge (anecdotal evidence, mind) that some of the new stuff is a depressant with a similar effect as hard alcohol (depression, anger, sadness, etc)
I don’t use myself; I spent 20 yrs in the CF, and with the constant threat of random drug testing, I wouldn’t be caught in the same room as a joint, in case the second-hand smoke screwed up my blood test or whatnot.
Also: Me = 🤓

Once, when they were talking about decriminalizing, and they stated that they were not going to prosecute people for simple possession of tiny amounts, I tried it, just to see what the fuss was about. I coughed too much and ended up swallowing the smoke. I spent the next half-hour or so burping up stale dopey gas. I didn’t get high or stoned; the only “buzz” I got was a mild dizziness from the lack of oxygen and coughing. Never went back.

Course, I never smoked ciggies, either, so my lungs were pretty “virgin” (except for tear gas).

So, my personal view is that smoking grass (because it’s illegal) is a sin. Mortal or venial? IDK. 🤷

If you go operate a motor vehicle or machinery while under the influence, I’d definitely wager mortal.

If you get your stash from the little old lady up the street who grows it in a few planters next to her aspidistras all descended from her own batch of seeds and cuttings she got from that lost weekend with Jimi Hendrix, maybe venial.

If you get it from a pusher who sells other drugs, is connected with any kind of gang, or has a house converted into a grow-op, mortal.

If you’re dying/in chronic suffering (AIDS/cancer/whatever) and weed helps you keep your food down and living another day, I’d say that it’s a mitigating factor, like stealing bread when you’re starving.

Thus speaketh the Ghoti. That and four quarters will get you a loonie.

I understand that not touching hot stoves is a good thing…stoned or not. 🙂

The point is that pot does very little to ease pain. All it does is slow down your bodies response to it.

I have not read the Buckley article. I will do that and report back to you.

God bless.

As far as being illegal I find that is very ironic because there has been numerous cases where the CIA and DEA have been caught helping crime figures smuggle all kinds of drugs into the US. Just do a Google search on it and you will see what I mean. I am reading a book by a former CIA agent who was kicked out for trying trying to report these findings. It is a very eye-opening book called “Drugging America- A Trojan Horse”. It has several testimonies from other federal officials explaining everything there is to know about the corrupt branches of law enforcement and where, when and how they worked with organized crime and allow them into the US. It is a very detailed and accurate book. Every time they are threatened with being publicly uncovered they seem to somehow find a way to get the person put in prison on some kinda BS charge, whether its an federal official or otherwise.

The Bush administration is even in on this and makes millions from the drug trade. I know many of you are Bush supporters but in my opinion he is the worst president in the history of this nation. As far as him being Christian I believe that is only to get more conservative votes.

Be careful about judging the hearts of others. I don’t agree with all of President Bush’s actions as Commander in Chief, but he is hardly the worst President we’ve ever had.

As far as the book you read; I am very suspicious of supposed “conspiracy theories” and their validity. Most are based on some level of truth, but the truth is usually far more complicated than we think.

Perhaps all the weed has made you paranoid.

Marijuana in itself is not sinful yes, but the problem is, it is highly addictive and that addictive nature has ruined many lives. So beware.

well the reason being is because although smoking a joint gets you high it impairs you about as much as 1 beer (mabye 2) so that is why i believe it is not bad. Drink 4-5 beers on the other hand and that obviously impairs you…I dont think that the effect of the drug is a sin but how much it impairs your reasoning/judgment/body
I can’t stand it.

Your opening diatribe makes some pretty outrageous claims, including some quotations that are not cited and claims about the physiological effects or lack thereof that, also, are not backed up with citations.

Now you’re claiming that a joint impairs one as much as a beer or two, and again, you provide no support for the claim.

Why not swing for the fences and claim that smoking a joint will cure arthritis, stop hair loss, clear up acne, sharpen your judgement, and cause you to win the lottery?

My point is that, even if you are right (which I doubt), you provide no evidence to support your position. Labelling government-sponsored sources as propaganda doesn’t make it so.

Finally, the effect is very much the issue. Deliberately impairing oneself is sinful. If one is impaired by smoking a joint (note: you have made an unsubstantiated claim that it doesn’t much), then how can it be defended from a moral standpoint?

Dante

I found myself laughing through the entire OP. It finally made sense when the poster told of the hours of research he had spent. (I get the feeling that his research wasn’t that inclusive of, “the other side of the story”)

I have seen similar rants come from protestants who show (very clearly, so they say) that catholicism is wrong and they have all the footnotes to prove it. Well, the problem with that is when you want to come up with a certain result in your studies, you will in many cases come up with that result (whether or not its true).

Now, add this to the fact that almost every single marijuana user says the same things (ei: doesnt hurt me, not addictive, doesnt affect my judgement) all while potentially “high”. Marijuana smokers seem to have a special abiblity to justify their use.

Oh yeah, I just quit smoking it after 12 years of using it and I sounded just like the OP no more than a few months ago. Now I look back and laugh at how off the mark I was.

For me, smoking pot…
-makes me lazy
-makes me care less about just about everything
-takes a bunch of time away from my family
-has definetely killed a few brain cells
-makes me forgetful

The fact that it is illegal (doesnt matter why) adds many more reasons why it could be considered sinful. I think pot should be “the 8th deadliest sin”. since it causes the other seven to not look so sinful.

To a PP, Pot is not legal in Canada, but most cops turn a blind eye unless its a huge grow op.

I’ve personally seen a man (my friend’s uncle) go from smoking a joint a week, to every day, to almost 10 times a day, then to heroin, then OD’d on heroin.

Pot does make you stupid. Don’t believe me? I’ll bring you to some of my classes. One pothead in my class wrote Western Europe in our presentation as Westnr Europe lol.

Pot is also becoming increasingly strong, as it is being laced with more and more things.

Don’t legalize it, we don’t need it in our society.

I’d say go ahead and make it available in very weak forms at pharmacies, via prescription for those in terminal illness or indefinate chronic pain/nausea. Why not? You can get all sorts of opiates there the same way.

But all the other arguments are pure rot. What is the motivation to smoke pot? To get baked. Unlike alcohol, it isn’t particularly social because it can only be done in an environment where EVERYONE is doing it. Been there. Hacked, coughed and left.

Unlike pot, alcohol can be consumed in moderation, in mixed company to the limited point where it enhances sociability without forcing anybody else to have an unregulated intake. Perhaps thats why Jesus had wine, but you never hear of him smoking anything… 👍

I may contribute further to this thread later. I wish however to address the comparison between cannabis, Rx drugs, tobacco, and alcohol. The general view of many of the people on this thread seems to be that cannabis is as bad, if not worse than these things. Here are the facts:
alcohol-435,000 deaths annually
tobacco-85,000 " "
Rx drugs- 32,000" " (and that’s legit use)
asprin and other anti-inflam. drugs-7,600" "
cannabis-0
*These numbers come from the Journal of American Medical Association.
Thank you, and godbless.👍
